Karena bulan pada hari ini adalah yang paling bulat dalam setahun menghadirkan integritas dan reuni, sehingga Festival Pertengahan Musim Gugur disebut juga "festival reuni". Bagi orang Tionghoa, Festival Pertengahan Musim Gugur adalah festival terpenting kecuali Festival Musim Semi. Pada hari Pertengahan Musim Gugur, orang Tionghoa biasanya menghargai bulan dan makan kue bulan. Menurut legenda, seorang wanita cantik dan seekor kelinci hidup di bulan. Wanita ini bernama Chang 'e. Festival Pertengahan Musim Gugur adalah saat bulan paling terang, seperti yang dikatakan legenda bahwa pada hari ini, orang dapat melihat Chang'e menari di bulan.
