I am a Cantonese person currently living in Guangzhou
Guangzhou is a very big city
But when I was young I lived in a small village in Guangdong
I am now more than 70 years old
However, I can still remember our life when we were young
That time was very different from now
When we were young we were very poor
The villagers were all poor and lived a very ordinary life
Sometimes we didn't have anything to eat
But now we can eat whatever we want
I remember the houses we had at that time were very old
We also had very few things in the house
However, my friends and I always had lots of fun
We didn’t have any stress
Children today have a lot of pressure
Every day they're studying the whole time and very rarely can play with their friends
At that time we also had to go to school, but there wasn't much pressure
My home was very near to the school, in the morning I could get there very quickly
At that time we all spoke Cantonese and couldn't speak Mandarin
But today's children all speak Mandarin in school
In the big cities in Guangdong lots of children can't speak Cantonese anymore
Also, when we were young we were always in the village
We had never been on a train and had never been to other places
Nowadays, going to other cities is the most ordinary of things
Lots of people are also able to fly to other countries by plane
The China of 60 years ago is very different from the China of today
I think I was pretty happy when I was young
But I have to say, now is much better than then

This is the first of several videos coming up over the next few weeks, sorry it’s been such a long time! The reason for the delay was my new app, which I’m delighted to announce is now available! If you like the content of the RU-vid channel then the app is made just for you, it’s more of the same and much more convenient. Android: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.immersive.chinese iOS: itunes.apple.com/us/app/immersive-chinese/id1451785130 - 110 lessons and counting. - More than 4000 sentence recordings. - Perfect difficulty curve for beginners. - Choice of playback speed (slow or normal) for each individual sentence. - Full offline use supported (all files can be downloaded and stored locally). - Detailed notes and definitions. - Powerful revision tools (in my opinion the “Repetition Session” feature is the best part of the app). - Choice of simplified or traditional characters (by popular demand). - Highly customisable audio playback (set the exact time delay between sentences). - More than 90% new content, also contains some of the old RU-vid stories. - Detailed pronunciation guide. - Mix of individual sentences and short stories (the story in this video is lesson 60 in the app). - Same familiar voice from RU-vid :) - Each line of text (translation, pinyin or Chinese characters) can be individually hidden (so you can test yourself). - Try 25 lessons (500 sentences) for free and unlock all content for just a few dollars.

Nice to see new videos. I will definitely check out the app. This video is lesson 60, so earlier lessons will be perfect for me. There's a ton of content for advanced students: it's great that someone is creating things for us "not there yet" people!

Yes, lesson 1 assumes zero knowledge of Chinese so it's perfect for absolute beginners. I tried to keep the difficulty curve as gentle as possible and avoid the temptation to progress too quickly.

It is really nice to have another video from you, and to hear your voice reading the words. But there is something disappointing about this video: you are not in it - at least not visually. You not appearing feels a bit weird. It is up to you of course, but it would be really nice to see you in future videos, as well as hear you. Love to you and your team. Thank you so much for what you do!

These videos are very helpful and the app is even better. At 5:40 you said "房子很老". Someone once told me, for living things normally use 老。For non living things normally use 旧 (jiu4) to describe "old". Is this true? But on Google translate, "old house" translates to "老房子". "The house is very old" translates to "房子很旧". So it seems like it is interchangeable right ?
@immersivechinese
@immersivechinese 5 лет назад
Yes, 老 can be either for things or people, but 旧 is definitely only for things. They aren't completely interchangeable, I feel like an attractive old building is more likely to be described as 老, whereas 旧 has more of a negative connotation (old in an undesirable way). There is some degree of overlap though.

why is 那 sometimes nà and sometimes nèi?
@immersivechinese
@immersivechinese 5 лет назад
Both pronunciations are about equally common, I decided to use a mix of both. Nà is the official pronunciation of the character 那, but in speech nèi is used just as often. Nèi was originally "那一" (nà + yī = nèi) but nowadays it is used like an alternative pronunciation of 那, and people may even say "nèi yí gè.

Any app for writing and grammar?
@immersivechinese
@immersivechinese 5 лет назад
To be honest I don't think too much time should be spent on either of those things. Chinese grammar is simple but illogical, the more you think about it the more complex it becomes. It's best just to mimic the way others speak and learn naturally (having said that, there are some notes on grammar in my app, though I tried to keep them as short as possible). As for writing, I think it's only worth devoting time to if you have an artistic or cultural interest in Chinese characters. Learning to write Chinese characters takes thousands of hours of practice and in the modern world there is almost no need to write with pen and paper. Reading is very important though so it's good to learn about the structure and etymology of the characters. I personally use Wiktionary to check details of characters (it has good etymological information), but I'm sure there are other good materials out there.

I'm not sure, mostly HSK 2 I'd say. I tried to keep the words as simple as possible, so beginners can understand the story. It's taken from lesson 60 in my Immersive Chinese app and website, and I was careful to only include words that had already been taught in the previous 59 lessons.
