The NWS is all over the place on the models at the moment from the original forecast where it plowed straight in to Florida. 1- Skirts the coast and rides it up to the north with the eye just on or off shore the whole way until it gets to South Carolina. 2- Goes into Florida and stalls before exiting through Jacksonville and maybe S.Carolina. 3- Goes in, stalls a bit and exits or skirts up the west side before plowing the panhandle. 4- Not my guess, but I saw another guy looking at a model that had the HIGH pressure that was working into the gulf that pushes it further south towards Broward- Dade a bit. The issue is how much it slows down and when. They have literally 6 or 7 guesses on where it goes because of the projected drop in speed and how much the trough's, low's, and high pressure near it that will steer things. Whichever way it comes in, this is going to be bad. Something i don't hear the weather people talking about is how this could be like the Lake Okeechobee hurricane 90 years ago. @Mara L your right. Many were much better with lower roofline, tongue and groove roofs, stone, rock and concrete wall, stronger doors and windows. People didn't have money to waste. Most houses getting direct from this cat 4 or 5 won't have an undamaged roof if they have one at all. Not being negative just realistic. After Andrew we noticed the one house standing in hundreds of acres was exactly as described with a sloping roof covered with pea rock. The pea rock was stripped off but they were the only ones with a standing houses and a roof for many miles. Blessing
@Mara L I've lived in Miami, Hialeah, Miami Lakes (Dade county) and now Ft Lauderdale (Broward County) Florida since 1965. All the older homes down south in Kendall, Redlands made it through Andrew. Many of those homes built in 1935. As populations increased and building materials became more precious cheaper to mass produce, not great quality. Not many woods harder than dade county pine. Many of our families homes and ranches from Miami to Jacksonville remain to this day. Upgraded only in plumbing, electric, and cosmetic. Building codes changed after Andrew and will after Michael. Houses today have plywood roofs, with 1/2 inch space between them and nailed not screwed down. New codes improve chances but don't insure a roof won't be damaged or removed in such long sustained winds. Orlando hasn't had a cat 4 or 5 hit the area like an Andrew or a Michael. If it does, unfortunately the devastation would be unmatched compared to the farmlands, ranches, air force base of south Florida's Andrew. The new building codes help. Some will be better protected or in areas of less high winds and tornado's. Remember, Andrew spawned thousands of tornados destroyed 70,000 acres of large tree forest. Blessings to you but just because we have more strict building codes, any area gets direct hit near center of cat 4 or 5 will have catastrophic consequences.
He was the chief meteorologist for hurricane Andrew.. He was amazing, and Betty considers him her hero .. He was the one that knew that Andrew wasn't going to come through Miami beach.
He is not awful. He is just not making up things to sound confident. They know it's path up to the Bahamas, they know it's gonna be very strong, they know it'll move slowly, almost stall, like Harvey. They don't know where it may go from there, because since it is moving so slowly, small changes around it can open up different paths. The Euro model was quite good at predicting Harvey's crazy loop and double landfall and crazy amount of rain, so they mention it as the most likely even if they can't show it.
