Slow refrigerator water dispenser DIY FIX

Water dispenser going slow on your fridge? It's probably the your water inlet valve.
Link to replacement water inlet valve: amzn.to/2LFjkCN
Volt meter: amzn.to/2JusoJr
In this short video I explain what the water inlet valve is, how to remove it, how to test for proper voltage to the solenoids, and how to install a new one. This job only requires a phillips head screwdriver and a wrench - but a set of needle nose pliers would be helpful.

Here's a crazy one. We have plenty of ice in the bin but no water. or ice would dispense from the door. We have a 12 year old side by side Electrolux with a water filter very similar to yours. So with your great video, we understood what we were doing and very easily installed the new water inlet valve. Nothing happened......so with nothing to lose, my husband opened up the front door dispenser module. We didn't have a new one to put in so he just unplugged it and then fiddled with the connections and plugged it back in. He also noticed the ground for the dispenser was loose so he sured it up. Put everything back together and by some miracle, it's all working. Don't really know which thing it was but the ice and water work better than ever. Thanks so much for your helpful video that really helped us become one with our good old frig ;-)

Excellent video, charlieaf92! I also read most of the comments because my 12 year old Whirlpool water dispenser worked good for about 4 seconds and then slowed to a trickle. After reading certain comments I decided to try this: I took out the water filter and pressed the water dispenser just to see if my unit worked without the filter or not, and the water came out at an even slower trickle. I kept it going for about 30 seconds and then replaced the same filter. Lo and behold the water came out like brand new! Have no idea why it worked but it is still working as of 5 minutes ago when I got up to check it again. Great video and comments everyone!

Always check the simple things 1st! I almost ordered the filter hose kit and almost bought the solenoid/ inlet valve kit before thinking “where does the water line go?” When I followed the water line from the fridge, through my cupboards and down to my utility room, I found that the valve was not fully open. All I did was open the valve and VOILA! Full stream of water, no waiting forever for a glass of water and ZERO cost :) No need to try to clean out mineral deposits from the lines either. Soooooo happy with this super simple fix.

Where’s the water valve
@StephenBieda
@StephenBieda Год назад
@@lilfide07 My tiny shutoff valve on the plastic line was in my utility room in my basement. I also have found that this water valve opening solution only solved the problem for a few months. Once guy I saw said that in the winter his line freezes more often. I don't know why this would make a difference. I learned later that I needed to turn down my freezer setting to 1 (lowest setting) because the water line/ dispenser kept freezing up. When this happens I leave the fridge door open for ~45 mins and insert some pillows into the fridge to help insulate the items inside the freezer while letting the door/ water line/ dispenser thaw a bit. Then I take some weed trimmer line and force it up into the water dispenser spout about 2 meters. This seems to unblock the frozen ice bits from the line. Then I can remove the pillows and close the door. It may be when you have more items in your freezer and you are away and not using your freezer that the water line freezes up more.

I did press the "like". My LG refrigerator is about 11 years old. For a few recent years the water has been very low pressure and I've had the ice maker turned off, getting ice from a stand-alone unit on a countertop. During this week I've turned the ice maker on and verified that it does cycle. It produces a small amount of small cubes. I'll return here and tell if my attempted fix is a success, or if I must replace the valve. Thanks!

This post was very helpful.At first I thought of air in the line, water was coming out but in a slow trickle, not like a usual flow. I flushed the line, still slow. I replaced the filter, still slow. It was running fine before and I know there isn't a kink in the water line. I am going to change the inlet valve. I have a Kenmore Elite but as you mentioned these valves are similar. I had no issues with ice making as the ice maker was making ice as usual.
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 6 лет назад
Hey Wyl - glad it helped! I experienced the same thing. It went from working just fine to trickling instantly. It happened after I changed my water filter, so I wasted time thinking it was a bad filter, or that air was trapped in the line. After spending 20 minutes trying to flush the air out of the system I came to the conclusion it must be one of the valves. They sell the valves as a single part, so you will probably have to replace all 3. After this video, I disassembled the bad valve. They are very simple - just a rubber diaphragm, spring, piston and electro-magnet. I didn't see anything wrong with the valve that would have prevented it from working properly though. Luckily its a $40 part so its easier just to replace the entire assembly and have 3 brand new valves.
@wylapache5362
@wylapache5362 6 лет назад
You know what it turned out to be, I did change the water inlet valve and still it was a "slow trickle". I had to change the "water filter housing", $67 part, took 20 mins. And that fix the trickle, now it flows like the day I bought it. Your video helps tremendously in diagnosing the flow issue. Keep up the great vids...... Cheers.

Not sure where to check from here, more fun I guess.
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 5 лет назад
Hey David - when you dispense without the filter in place does it come out the normal spout, or does it spill out inside of the fridge? If its still coming out of the spout, there must be some kind of a bypass switch in place to allow for use when a filter isn't in place. Perhaps that mechanism is the source of the problem. Strangely, my problem started after replacing the filter - but turned out to be completely unrelated to the filter itself.

Sadly my home warranty people came twice, replaced the water inlet valve and did not fix the problem. I'm thinking something in the system is backed up or clogged. The flow of the water is slow from the copper pipe that is connected to the fridge hose. Next step is either run some vinegar to flush the system or get a water pressure gauge and see if that is the issue. It does appear to fill the glass slow even when it is disconnected from the fridge.
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 4 года назад
Oh really? Sorry to hear that. It sounds like the problem is somewhere in the water lines. If other faucets work well in your home, perhaps its just the valve on the pipe going to the fridge, that would be a fairly easy fix. Best of luck resolving it!

Thanks for the video. I've got a similar low flow issue on my GE fridge - it's a 3 year old French Door model (similar to the GE Profile fridges but without the Profile extras). What's strange is I get a good flow rate from the dispenser when installing a new water filter, but the dispenser rate drops off after about 3 weeks on the filter. If I change the filter, it goes back to a normal flow rate but than drops off again after 3 weeks (and the cycle keeps repeating). For the first 3 years of ownership, we didn't have this issue... only started a couple of months ago. Only thing I can of to try is replacing the valve like you showed in this video (perhaps the solenoid isn't opening all the way, and once the new filter has the smallest amount of buildup, it's enough to impair the dispenser rate?).
@charliefrancus4744
@charliefrancus4744 4 года назад
Hey Daniel! If it changes based on a new filter I would start there. Are you buying the GE brand replacement filters? I've made the mistake of buying the $10 version on Amazon and have since learned that they do not filter to the same quality as the higher cost filters. I would start off by trying the dispenser with the filter removed. My fridge bypasses the filter if it is removed, but others require a blank insert to prevent it from leaking.

@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 2 года назад
Probably the inlet valve. There are 3 solenoids on it, one specifically for the water dispenser, one for the ice maker, and one that has to open for both. If the valve for the water dispenser starts to go bad you'll get slow water flow but your ice machine will continue to operate correctly.

Good question. I suspect its like a little plastic or rubber straw/spout that has been knocked off. If you're able to remove the surrounding panel you might find it back in there. You could also look up a parts diagram online and see what it looks like and order a replacement. You may be able to install a new one without any disassembly but I'm not sure.

Ok, I bought a used whirlpool fridge recently, about a few days ago, I have a home water filtration system under my kitchen sink, with a small faucet that was installed with it that provides super clean water, the water that came out of the faucet was almost like a laser beam of water it had so much pressure, when the used fridge was installed, this faucet was still pushing water like a champ, my fridge was pushing a good stream of water, so I went and bought a new filter for it, it was a filter that was on the bottom grate, not the kind you twist and pull out, it's the kind you open a cover lid at the bottom and the filter pops right out, so I put the new filter in, started pouring the water out of the dispenser to prime or get the water flowing through the filter. Water came out, then it was just air flowing through, then the water started slowing coming through, but noticed it was sooo slow, I mean it was working fine before replacing the filter, and now the faucet on my kitchen sink that was made to pour the super clean filtered water from under the sink had low pressure as well, it uses to be a jet. The line that comes out of the under the sink filter splices to the faucet and to the fridge, I don't see how after changing the fridge filter, that it lowers the pressure from the faucet as well. I took the fridge filter out, and tried to pour the water out of the filter, and fill it up with water in the sink before putting it back in the fridge. The water filter isn't really designed to be filled with water prior to installing it I think. Then I realized about bypassing the filter, and we'll I think it has a bypass built in, because I took the filter out of the fridge and water kept flowing through the fridge dispenser, and it came out just slightly faster than with the filter in the fridge but not quite enough, it's still very slow, and the faucet on the sink showed a little bit more pressure, but not nearly as strong as before. It's still slow even after using the built in bypass, is my under the sink filter affected by what happened? I know this seems very unique, I just hope u have some thoughts of what might be the problem here. If it's something I can fix, or if I need to professional to fix, flush out the system in the fridge maybe? But will that bring back the pressure for my aink faucet?
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 3 года назад
Wow David. It sounds like there is a lot going on there. I'm not completely sure I understand the layout, but it sounds like you may have a reverse osmosis system under the sink and it's possible it is installed with a line supplying your fridge? Does the setup under the sink include a large metal cylinder with 1 line going to it as well?

@@charlieaf92 thank you for your response in order to figure out something that may have sounded complicated in order to try to help, but honestly man, for some reason everything is working now, the sink faucet is jetting again, the fridge water dispenser is able to fill up a cup faster now, idk what it was, the next day I tested the pressure out of both faucet and fridge, and worked like before! I realized now that I didn't really need to put a new filter in my fridge after finding out that there is a built in bypass, but it's working fine now through the filter. And yes there is a big tank under my sink and I think like a 5 filters system set up, it's alot of seperate filters under that sink, but good news everything is working as should! Maybe it just needed a day to adjust the pressure? The fridge water filter was a little weird in terms of design from what I'm used to. But all in all thank you for replying and attempting to help
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 3 года назад
@@DHosa713 I'm glad it is working! My best guess is that your storage tank emptied during your filter change and subsequent purge. This would lead to very low pressure until the tank has a chance to re-fill, which can take a few hours.

Hey Kamron. That could be the result of lower water pressure in your home (but if your faucets have decent pressure and flow fine then that probably isn't it). The other possibility is that the valve that supplies your fridge is not opened all the way. Finally, it could be a partial clog in the system. When was the last time you replaced the water filter?

I replaced the inlet valve and it worked...water flow was great! Came back to the fridge a few hours later and it takes 10-20 seconds for the water line to fill for the water to come out...this continues to happen a few days later...is there something I need to adjust in the connecting of the inlet valve? Seems like the line isnt' staying filled with water? Once the water comes out, it does come out full pressure.

That is strange, I'm not sure. Do you have a filter installed in the fridge? Sometimes those will have air in them and cause symptoms kind of like what you're describing. I believe the solution is to run it for a while (fill up a pitcher).

GE refrigerator water dispenser stopped working over a year ago - all of a sudden began working last week. Today - it stopped working. Could this possibly be the inlet valve? If so - I'm having trouble matching an inlet valve with the model #GSH22JSXM SS - refrigerator over 10 years old

It sounds like it could be the inlet valve, but it's impossible to say for sure without some testing. When you press the water dispenser do you hear a click/hum or other noise from the back of the refrigerator? If so, I'd say there's a better than 50/50 chance it is the inlet valve that needs to be replaced. I did a quick search and found this one, which may work for your unit: amzn.to/39yWc6k

Hey Brenda. I'm not sure to be honest. If it works fine without the filter in place then I would suspect it's either a problem with the filter itself or possibly a bypass valve like you said. It also could be the inlet water valve. If it is not opening all the way and not providing full pressure, it would be more obvious when the filter is in place because it restricts some water flow. It's possible the problem is there even without the filter, but its less noticable.

We have the same problem with our Whirlpool refrigerator wrx735sdbm04. Replacing filters every 2-3 months. Takes 1 minute to fill 16 oz glass. With no filter, it takes seconds. I did notice stuff floating in the water when not using a filter. Like tiny white specs. I’m wondering if something is clogged in the water line. We replaced the water line going from the shut off valve to the refrigerator line. We also cleaned the refrigerator water lines using a vinegar/water solution which helped get rid of the larger debris. What do you think?

I’m not getting any water from the dispenser or ice when pressing either paddles. The ice machine is making ice. It just won’t come out. I’ve changed the water filter and still no water. I’ve read there could be so many different reasons causing the problem. What do you think??

@charlieaf92 2 года назад
Ah... hm. So do you have a paddle for each one? One for ice and one for water, or is it a single paddle and you use a button to change what it does? It definitely isn't an issue with the inlet valve like mine was. It sounds like it is related to the micro-switch that the paddle activates or perhaps a control board if you have multiple paddles that are malfunctioning.
@donnieloverforever
@donnieloverforever 2 года назад
I do have separate paddles for the water and ice. After researching I’ve thought that it may have to do with the switch or the board like you mentioned. @@donnieloverforever my pleasure! If you have a multimeter you should be able to test the switches and see if they're working. My gut feeling is that if both stopped working at the same time, its likely that its the board or some other shared component that failed vs. the switches themselves.

@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 5 лет назад
Hey Sherrie. I'm not quite sure. Did you install the new one or did the delivery people do it? A couple possibilities are that the water supply valve wasn't fully turned back on after installation, or the supply line got kinked/pinched when moving the new fridge into place. If you paid for installation, I would call the company you paid and explain the situation. Did your old unit have an in-line filter? If not, its possible you're just seeing the difference caused by having a filter in-line.

thanks for the video - you give a part link but don't say what model fridge you have! All the parts sites show that part for my model (2008 LG lfx25971st), as well as just a single valve MJX41178908 - which when I took off the back seems to be what I have - under $20 on Amazon which is nice. Water worked fine for more than a decade and suddenly flow slowed like overnight - assuming that the valve is going bad (ice is fine) - part arrives today so I'll know by tomorrow. Water seems to have gotten harder of late, possible cause? FYI at least on my unit you can leave the water line going through the back plate and it slides right over even with the inlet line attached to the valve - so you can test for leaks and then put the back back on without detaching the line again! Any idea as to why LG decided to make things more complicated and expensive with the three solenoid valve when a single works fine for the older model?
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 3 года назад
Hey - good point. It is a 2008 LG, I don't remember the exact model number. As far as cause, I don't know exactly. I took the valve apart and didn't see any signs of buildup that would have caused it to malfunction. In the end I decided to just replace it completely vs. clean and re-assemble.

@charlieaf92 4 года назад
What does too much pressure look like? I have never had this problem, but the machine does not have any type of internal pressure regulator (that I know of). So it would be a function of your supply line pressure. If it is truly a problem, I would suggest an in-line pressure regulator for the appliance, or perhaps getting one for your main water line. Here is a link to an inline regulator for this type of purpose: amzn.to/2AJmdid

Agreed - it sounds like its a supply issue. Maybe the shutoff valve you're drawing from - or even an issue of water pressure getting to the valve. I would try unhooking the water line from the back of the fridge and trying to fill a bucket with a mark showing where 1 gallon is. Time it, and see what kind of flow rate you're getting.

There are 3 solenoid valves on the inlet. The first needs to open for both the ice and water to work - then there is one just for ice and one just for water. It sounds like it could be a bad inlet valve - but you can test it to be sure. There are also other reasons an ice machine would not be working properly.

Hi Jorge - if you have water coming out on the ice dispenser when you press the button that sounds like it could be an issue at the inlet valve. I suspect the valve for the ice dispenser is stuck open and when you are pressing the water dispenser it opens up the main valve, which lets water rush past the stuck valve.

It starts dispensing water for about 2-3 seconds then stops. I’ve changed the filter, purged it, unplugged to 5 mins. It even dispenses randomly when locked. Do you think this could be the inlet valve? Thank you
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 4 года назад
Hey Mike, thank you! Regarding your problem, is it coming up in a pressurized stream like someone is pushing the dispense button? If you're just seeing dripping and finding water puddles, it could just be ice that is stuck in the chute and melting. If it is coming from the nozzle but maybe not as full pressure as if the button is being pressed, I would suspect the inlet valve. However, if it is actually shooting out like someone is pressing the button I would suspect its a short circuit somewhere. If that's the case the actual button/switch that gets pressed by the glass would be my first guess.
