I met Ron Paulus at the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, on March 26, 2024. We talked about life for the German Rocket Scientists the US government hid in Huntsville after WW2 and prospects for the current NASA SLS program. Mr. Paulus was one of the project engineers for the Apollo, Skylab, and Space Shuttle programs and now works at the Space and Rocket Center, where he helps teach the public about the history of the US Space program daily.

My dad was working at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal when Oppenheimer and Godard were there on the way to Los Alamos Labs, not White Sands directly but at the labs. He went to the fence of the holding area and spoke to them. He was then investigated as a possible German sympathizer because our last name is Shafer. They made poison gas there and that is why it is a super fund site. He later worked as a machinist for Coors Porcelain on the space program. He made the exploding bolts for the Gemini and Apollo capsules and components for the F1 engines. My granddad worked there too and he worked on Skylab before he retired.

Very interesting. Unhappy but interesting as a true contemporary and historic document. Thanks Brasil

I was surprised and pleased to see they had 3 retired engineers on site talking with visitors. I recognized Ron Paulus' name which is why I spoke with him - didn't know the other two guys and it wasn't long from closing so I didn't have time to learn about them too. Maybe next time.

Nice stroll down history lane.. too bad the audio recording device /setup wasn't of higher quality. It's hard to understand.. 🙁

True - noisy environment and wasn’t as steady with camera as had to fight it from hunting horizon - would love to do a longer talk with him but was close to closing time and others were waiting

So I have a question. Was he aware he was recorded for this video? The reason I ask is the camera work is so bad it looks like its almost meant to be hidden. If he was aware why did you do him such a dis-service as to video him like that?

Yes he was aware and talking and recording with a hand held camera is not my strength / it was a DJI osmo pocket 3 and it was in a mode that kept looking for a horizon so it was panning up and down during the recording rather than staying fixed so it was a bit of a fight - turns out there is a mode where that “feature” can be turned off but it was not correctly activated sorry.

The SLS for Artemis 2 is supposed to start stacking in the VAB later this year. I don't think there's any serious question whether or not it will fly.
