W126 sedan and the pump and rear shockers are shot ,priced with several mechanics and it blew me away ,i tried to source my own parts and it came into the thousands upon thousands of dollars ,two new coils two new rear Gabriel shock absorbers $285 all up ,2.2 hours labour time including disabling the drive from camshaft to sls pump ,all done on ground in my garage with a handfull of tools ,have done near 18000 kilometres and the vehicle drives outstanding ,have towed a horse float with two horses no issues ,no squeeks rattles its spot on ,so glad i ripped that system out and binned it should of done it many years ago

Got my first Mercedes with SLS. 1996 C250 wagon turbo diesel. Just ordered fluid and filter from Mercedes and I'm going to do a system flush.

I have spent a LOT of money having the SLS completely rebuilt with new parts on my 190E 16V but I believe you have to keep these cars original. SLS is a great thing to have on a 16v because as it maintains ride-height handling is consistent no matter how many passengers are on-board.

that's right! I love the SLS /16v combo. So smooth and yet, handles so well.

My 84 w126 v8 sls started leaking at 250k miles. Found non leaking struts. Replaced ball joint boots with suspension ball joint boots. Replaced strut boots with honda ct90 fork boots, slightly modified. Had to replace o rings in levelling valve and replace spheres a few times, but still going well at 290k miles. Glad I kept sls.

I just bought an 84 300TD with the SLS removed. I want to put it back. Is there a single place I can source all the components: valve, reservoir, actuators/"shocks", linkage, accumulators, the whole 9 yards? I was demoralized when I looked under the car and saw it all gone. I can definitely handle it, I designed the active hydraulic suspension system for the John Deere corn planter. Should I try and find all new parts? THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THESE VIDEOS. I LOVE THIS CAR. I have never loved a car like this before, even my Volvo 240 wagon. I am going to sink a not totally logical amount of money into preserving the body of this European import car.

I replaced the hydraulic shocks and accumulators and fluid for my W210 wagon SLS. Parts by themselves were around $800. Thankfully I could do the work myself.... and honestly it wasn't that hard. If you can do brakes and shocks you can do that job.

About a year ago, my 90 SEC was sagging a bit in the rear. My fear was that the accumulators had failed. So I started looking at spheres and what was required to replace them. I also drove the old gal a bit since she had been sitting for months with only the occasional startup. Lo and behold, the car was just pissed at me for being locked up in the garage. As is now well.

@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753
they are generally tough, those SLS systems

On the 126 chassis,I prefer the 300SE and 300SEL because you didn't get the SLS system to start off with in the car. But, I do like to keep my cars factory original so if I was to buy a 420SEL or 560SEL, I would NEVER rip the system out. They are purely mechanical so I would replace the needed components to maintain the integrity of the system. I'm old school like that.
@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753
when SLS is 100 percent you can out 5 people, a tank of gas and luggage in the car...and it doesn't complain

Dear Pierre, first of all congrats for your excelent channel. I enjoy it deeply. I ask for your help in connection with the SLS system. I have a 280 SLC in great conditions with one of the rear struts (shock absorbers) with a leak. My question is if you know any place, anywhere, where you can buy an ship new parts, or rebuild properly, or send mine for repair. My intention is not to replace the system. Thank a lot. SLS is a cool feature and I miss it on today´s car... my dad had it in the W126 back then and it helped a lot when the car was fully loaded...I also agree these cars should be kept as original as possible... otherwhise or if you can´t afford a repair, don´t get a classic car...

As far as the w126 chassis goes, I prefer the non- SLS cars. Looking for comment on 6 vs 8 cylinder setups as I seem to have preference want to know if it's fully justified. Both my '90 560SEC, '87 560SEL felt like stiff cardboard & lacked dynamic dampening compared to the lovely mattress ride of the 300 SDL. My current w124 300TD (with SLS) however, swoons smoothly over rough pavement and dirt roads. This has led me to believe that I prefer the softer rides that comes with 6-cylinder cars (is this even true?) Both my 560s had the accumulators replaced but still felt harsh and transferred more NVH. To give credit, around corners those 560s would eat the others said cars for breakfast as you mentioned.
@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753
the biggest issue with sls was nothing more than the mounting bushings for the shocks on the v8 cars...they sent out a technical service bulletin telling owners to install an updated part number for the rear hydraulic shock mounting bushings...problem solved.

I have a recently bought a 280SE 6 cylinder with SLS and I have been replacing all the fluids as I can get around to it. There is some internet info about just running new fluid through the SLS reservoir while draining with the return pipe using some clear hose into a bottle to flush the old fluid. Do you think this works? I'm sure it is not a complete flush but maybe it help with some new fluid??

Ah! Self Leveling Suspension! Took me a minute. It's on a '77 450 SEL 6.9 I'm looking at. The guy selling it replaced all the accumulators. Apparently there's no body roll on cornering (in the above vehicle) when the system is functioning properly. I'm hoping to get that car. It accelerates a lot better than my 450sl. A lawn mower probably does as well. Lol
@bobl78

the hydro suspension on the 6.9 is something different.. SLS is just on the rear axle... it keeps vehicle height constant , no matter if the car is loaded or not

wow...there's a car that demands 100 effort...please do a lot of research to make sure you can handle it...but what a car to drive!

good to maintain your favorite car, but realistically it can easily COST MORE TO repair then the value of car.

The only good reason to remove the sls that I could think of is if you were replacing it with something like coil overs and other suspension modifications to turn the car into a race car or something.

Do you feel the same about the w108 self levelling hydropneumatic system? My w108 280se has a spring where the hydropneumatic cylinder once was and I not sure if I should try and bring it back to stock or keep the spring.

@mercedesclassicswithpierre1753
hi again, rya. I think they hydro compensator is nice but at 4,000 for a rebuild, the benefit is not as noticeable as the SLS system.

Original is the best way to return to/maintain. i love the analog/simplistic function of this sls system. Thanks Pierre oh! quick question! if my dads beautiful 1991 w126 300SE has sat around for 3-4 years because the fuel system had clogged and hasnt been worked on since. shame shame shame.... my question is.....what should the biggest concerns be initially and is it even worth trying to get it back on the road?? (only having a classic mb specialist do repairs) the last time i attempted to begin restoring my dads car i purchased a rebuilt fuel distributor from GermanStar for ~800$ but had to postpone further repairs since then..

Giovanni Arohsiri full fuel system flush would be my first port of call, as well as inspecting every rubber hose, pipe &/connection on the car (replacing when necessary). Pierre would be best to take it from there. 👍

Oops on the first reply. Had to do this on my 1973 450 SLC. I drained the tank, replaced the strainer and the filter and pumped furl through until I had good flow and all soft lines were checked. Luckily my injectors were ok, could have been worse. Mercedes parts are high quality and durable, you may be surprised with how few need replaced. Good luck.
