I repaired a 1200 mm gear that had a small power gear with a dropped out keyway stuck to it, every 12th tooth was gone an old welder bronzed it up and I re cut the teeth with a dremil and files, it ran for 9 years and never failed. Good work
Yes in lower power installations can function but not at higher power ones, maybe for starters or for intermediate processing about not direct work flow i wouldn't recommend it.
2.5 horsepower electric motor, machine spinning 1.2 metre x 1.4 metre high cast iron cam stamping caps onto a bottle and rolling threads in aluminium caps at 1700 RPM is light work of course even after 10 hours shifts for 9 years, however it never broke, the same welder also did Leyland and Mack tuck great boxes in the 1960s and 70s that hauled iron ore in the Pilbara of Western Australia, he laughed when I asked is it strong enough?
This is one skilled craftsman. It doesn't mean the gear hasn't been permanently damaged by the process, or that it will be able to take any significant load without breaking and creating more damage. However, as an exercise, a curiosity, or a very temporary solution, it's quite impressive.
@@mnztr1 Many gears are made of soft steel that can´t be hardened by heat treatment, and are not designed to handle big loads, so those would simply continue working. The repaired tooth can be nearly as strong as the other ones and they doesn't tend to get brittle eider after soldering. Now, heat treated high carbon steel gears, or even surface hardened gears might be ruined by these kind of repairs.
thta,s exactly what the commenters meant by "ruined", but i disagree about " mild steel mostly" which is not true....gears are mostly hardened and even differentially hardened to keep the wear resistance on the teeth and the elasticity and shock resistance at the center...it depends on the aplication, he did a good job on rebuilding the geometry with only simple tools( so one might not even assume welding and a grinder simple at all, bcs simple would be only hand tools, hmmm? ) and yes, the job is well done in that matter, but under loads and high speeds i wouldn,t use this other than a last resort, and most of all not in an automotive application!
@@SR-gs8zo I also thought gears where all hardened steels, for a matter of logic. But at least here in Brasil, the steel most commonly used to make gears, including crown sprocket are mainly sae1020, according to their own specifications when you buy them, which is not hardenable, but can be cemented (surface treatment). Although for any higher speed applications, those would be hardened high carbon steels. But I agree that he made an excellent job.
I arc welded an outboard motor flywheel gear in 3 places. I made a template of about 10 teeth. Each spot needed 4 or 5 teeth welded. Ground it the same way. Came out great. Been using it for two years, still looks great. Saved about $500 dollars. Used a $60 ebay arc welder. 👌
Gears are case hardened. If you get it red hot, it will soften it. On the other hand, if a replacement isn't available, I don't see anything wrong with trying an idea like this. Depending on what the gear goes to, and what the torque load is on it, it may last for the life of the machine. Thanks for sharing.
Let's face it, if that repair could last the rest of the life of the machine the original would never have broken. Plus the part damage was staged, a gear would not shear three teeth perfectly like that and the other gear would also be damaged.
Such videos are nothing more than information noise. As a rule, they are staged and filmed for the purpose of getting views and likes. Harm to humanity.
I was expecting you to install it on the engine and wait for the teeth to break. Because, since it's not exanimated thermally , it'll definitely break.
"exanimated" means deprived of life - in other words 'dead'. So what you are saying is that if a gear is thermally dead it will break. Thermally dead would mean cold wouldn't it? So we can now conclude that warm gears break and cold gears don't. How utterly enlightening!! Art from Ohio
Seeing how it's no stronger than a braze and how it looks like there was previous repair damage elsewhere I would say this is probably in a low stress machine and would work fine for the use as intended. Edit: typo corrected.
Steel gears are not a case where new teeth can be welded on. Even if the original teeth are broken, the welded ones will break even more when tightened. It would be correct to machine a new gear from a similar material, and then it would be correct to harden this gear according to the technology, as required by the technology. Otherwise this marriage will not work. Otherwise, this marriage will not take place. Moreover, adjacent sections of metal lose their technology when heated and will quickly fail. Now, if because of this breakdown you are stuck somewhere very far from civilization, and you have no way out, then it makes sense to make such gear. then while praying to God or Allah, move carefully and slowly to reach people without breaking your masterpiece. In any case, this will not work for long. And yes, all these measurements with calipers are complete bullshit, there the tolerances for the gear to work under load and not break are a couple of hundredths or less, but here it is almost a millimeter plus or minus! It's just rubbish!
Sooo.. How do you harden those welds ..to become gears.. Or is this a temporary repair to sell that motorcycle..and when it explodes...AGAIN.. Now it's someone else's problem..??
Those teeth will strip when put under load. Gears are a circular lever and the load is dictated by the ratio of one to the other and that determines torque load. They are also heat treated so they do not wear out quickly due to friction from steel to steel contact. Oil is a friction modifier not an eliminator.
I have done this kind of repair. However this guy seems to be using an incorrect flame to make the deposit and the sparks indicate that oxidising is occurring. Assuming the gear is a steel alloy then three different filler materials are required. A prepping material for the first layer the second should be a mid range ‘stellite’ and then a full hard stellite for the final layer. This will result in a good bond with the original and a progressive strengthening to full hard on the surface. A good welder will be able to produce a fair profile for each tooth requiring little machining to achieve a finished job. Done properly the repair will be better than the original. If the gear is subjected to a pulsing load then the gear should be reset to introduce previously unstressed teeth. A typical scenario is from the reciprocating ram on a hay baler where we used to reset the bull wheel and pinion gear some 90 degrees from the current load zone. We did this every 3 to 4 seasons according to the workload. This saved the customer downtime during the season.
Ii that a base electrode you are using???have some worn dogbones on a 80 cc dirtbike ,can i just try to weld it with a nicroma or base electrode???anyway great methode, realy cool
Braising stick welding electrode filler metal, I’ve seen some pretty “unique” fixes on RU-vid labeled welding hacks and for the most part I can’t disagree They are most certainly hack jobs someone was too cheap or lazy to do it right the first time. But hey if it holds together please do a detailed follow up including its install location, type of load (constant, variable, intermittent or pulsing start and stop engagement), gear train changes, Motor HP and rpm, approximate hours or days of service life and some close ups of the new gear teeth showing the wear incurred.
The gear will need to be heat treated again, when I was repairing power tools I was warned against heating up a gear using an oxy acetylene torch because that can soften the gear. The gear teeth aren't polished,I can remember when my manager had to use valve lapping compound to lap in brand new Hitachi angle grinder gears which were noisy out of the packet !
Nonsense, it won't hold up if it's really supposed to transmit power. No involute. No hardening.....without words. Without power transmission, only ok as a movement or temporary solution.
This is a lost art. Of course it won't hold up in something like a tractor transmission, but of medium use it's very durable. Have seen this done many times on machinery with NO failures
Wow, this patch is very dangerous if you use a load, even though the original just broke, if I didn't dare to use a reconditioned item like this it would further damage the other parts so it's vital, it's best not to imitate it except for displaying the senab, this is dirty technology.
Teeth profile ki identical hobey, grinding korey generate Kara tooth gulir? Hobey na. Mating gear key nasto korbey. Er par 2 ta gears key new banatey badhyo hobey.
