Slug control 100% and most humane

See my NEW DIY raised bed and slug control video here:
• Comparing slug control...
This is probably the most humane way to control slugs and barring something unusual it is 100% effective. This video shows how to install and test the electric slug control fence in a raised bed garden. (See also "Comparing Slug Control methods": • Comparing slug control... )
I stapled 2 parallel runs of galvanized wire around the raised bed and connected them to a 9-volt battery.This fence is an improvement over my earlier fences where I used aluminum welding wire. The aluminum wire is more fragile and usually lasts just one year. (You can speed the video up 2X by selecting the little gear symbol at the bottom of the video). Update: I am currently using stainless steel welding wire that is 0.8 mm. Highly recommend this wire as, along with SS staples, you should get years of service. The spool of SS welding wire that I bought was about $45 but I have enough to "last a life time" (length is not stated on the spool). In Canada you can get this at Princess Auto.

No problem when raining because the electrical resistance between the 2 conductors is still very high and therefore very little additional current will flow between them. I live in a very wet area and the battery lasts all of the growing season.

I didn't know slugs could hang like spiders.. Also, it seems the big slug was traumatized.. it shows they have the ability to learn from their experience
@BobKelland
@BobKelland 7 лет назад
The small slug was an unintentional player in the video. I believe he made contact with the wires before I arrived and was momentarily stunned or was just laying there enjoying the buzz. Anyway the booger-like slime saved the day for him as it automatically held him in place while he was out and when the big slug disturbed him the string of slime stretched out and gently lowered him down.

Thank you for showing us this. Poison is cruel and slugs and snails shouldn't be made to suffer just for trying to live. So this provides an effective deterrent.
@BobKelland
@BobKelland 11 лет назад
Nola, beer attracts slugs to the garden as does poison pellets. The electric fence (above) prevents them from entering the raised bed garden in the first place. It is also the most humane idea as the slugs are not harmed as with most all other approaches.

Hi Bob, I did it and it just works !!!! It's so simple I can't figure out why its not on the market. Putting the wires on the outer side of the fence is definitely the way to do it: sluggs cant get in but when they get out they end up falling on the outer side. I end up with quite a bit of slime on the wire and it dosen't seem to kill the sluggs. Thank you for your video, its way better than these nasty blue toxic grains

Bob Kelland ...Just wanted to give you a appreciated thank you for these garden raised bed videos. Making raised beds with wiring and the 9 volt battery looks like a proven successful solution. Definitely; worth the effort in the long run. I've been determined to garden again; but was discouraged because of snail slug issues in the past. Now I'm thinking of making a low raised bed for flowers. And surrounding it with plants /flowers that are snail resistant. And a few hidden beer traps. Thank you again for all of your hard work and sharing your garden know how. It's really appreciated. God bless ..

Kids sometimes touch the terminals of a 9 volt battery to their tongue to get a little jolt. The saliva enables the battery terminals and tongue to make very good electrical contact that will cause enough current flow to give the shock. A similar effect takes place with the slug or snail - the on board slime being equivalent to the saliva. Non slimy things will have a higher electrical resistance and will not normally result in sufficient current flow to give a shock (at 9 volts that is).

Great video. Why didn't someone think of this before...fry the buggers! I have 4 raised beds here in Hamburg Germany and slugs are the bane of my gardening life. The growing season is short enough without donating half to support slug central command. I'm putting my electric fence in next week and will let you know how it works. Of course they have to navigate the salt pellet minefield and the beer moat first but that just thins out the herd. The great thing about your idea is you can install it even if you don't have a raised bed, just ring the bed with 4x2s.
@BobKelland
@BobKelland 7 лет назад
Thanks John - yeah it is so far the only real solution that I have found. Not new though as I had a patent search done more than thirty years ago (still have the docs) and even then someone had the general idea covered... guess with farming type electric fences, etc. nothing here totally innovative. Would like to see how it works for you. I mentioned before somewhere that I cheat a bit at the start of the season by installing a new 9 volt battery and then I put slug pellets (poison) under a board in the raised bed. The idea is to get rid of any slugs that got on board over the winter. After that it is electric fence all the way.

I wonder if it would work to make a frame of 2x4s, on edge, to surround the ground-level bed and apply the wires to its perimeter close to the top edge? Perhaps use 2x6s so that you could sink them a few inches into your soil so the little buggers would be less likely to simply pass underneath...

Found that this does work for the larger ones but small slugs and snails have not issue crossing as they mostly never touch more than a single wire at once. Ive resorted to going out at night with head torch and pair of scissors. Yes i am a slug serial killer, but it works a treat.
@BobKelland

Your approach ok but too risky. A slug can do a lot of damage after you go in for the night. This works on small slugs too as they tend to stretch out when crossing.

It even works better when you connect a condensator across the battery, Running time of battery also increases. There is just one problem with slugs I at first not realized The slugs not only migrate from the outside but a distinct number lives witin the containment and then only Nematodes are helpfull. I had a fine meshed barbed wire blocking out snails but slug can press themselve trough very small mesh So I fight them with electric shocks to keep them out and nematodes for the inside job.
@BobKelland
@BobKelland 11 лет назад
jtavangar - There must be a poor connection between the battery terminals and the wires. Have someone monitor the the voltage on the wires, making sure the meter is firmly connected, while you wiggle the wire connections at the battery. Please let me know how you make out.
@thenaughtytreasury6031
@thenaughtytreasury6031 7 лет назад
Great idea! I will definitely try this the coming season in my square foot gardens! I have a question though (as an electro noob....) how do you connect the metal wires with the battery? I see you use some sort of snap fastener on the battery but how do you connect the metal wires to the snap fastener?
@BobKelland
@BobKelland 7 лет назад
You can find these snap fasteners at electronic supply places. They come with two wire leads that I crimp to the stainless steel "fence" wires around the gardens. The mechanical/crimping type of connection makes a satisfactory electrical connection. Not much sense trying to solder as the stainless steel fence wires would probably make soldering difficult. Twist or crimp them together and it will work.

I always thought slugs were like little trams and they would actually enjoy running along these wires!

Thanks for posting, I imagine the effectiveness goes down after the wire oxidizes...?, I'll use a 9 or 12 volt transformer instead as our growing season is year round.

Now a days I use stainless steel wire so oxidation is not a problem. If you go with a line connected transformer make sure it is plugged into a gfci outlet and it would be a good idea to fuse the secondary with a very low current fuse. I still recommend a standard 9-volt battery.

@@BobKelland thanks yes gfci outlets on all outside outlets & near damp locations.

Just watched it again. So would I get shocked if I touched the 2 wires?

Thank you so much for this vid! I have a 60 linear ft border around my garden area, do you think the one 9v battery should keep the current strong enough?

You're welcome! That should not be a problem at all. There is very little current drain under most circumstances even when the slug/snail makes a quick contact so you should get along fine with just one 9-volt battery.

Bob, Thanks for the reply, I am planning on doing this on the BIg Island where it rains.... A LOT.... that will weaken the charge, right? Load the battery more? Thoughts?

Wow - I was there many years ago but right now I am on another big Island (Newfoundland) where it is also wetter than "normal" and the 9-volt system works just fine. You don't want to have too much current capacity as that can create high current flows if some good conductor (such as a metal garden tool) shorts out the the two fence wires. An ordinary 9-volt battery is fine as it will limit current flow if a direct short occurs. To go a little bit further - don't consider using a car battery or any other high current capacity battery because if a short happened the wires would likely get red hot and cause unwanted problems.

1 ? if it gets very wet could it short out and drawn out the battery? I have not see anyone do this wire for getting slugs out thank you for this video!!!!

Kevin Osgood Kevin - The one battery lasts me for the whole growing season and I live in a pretty damp area.

I just followed your instructions and installed the wires, battery, etc on my raised bed. However, when I measure the voltage between the two wires I get 0.5 volts, vs. the 8.5 volts that I get directly from the battery. I'm using 16 gauge galvenized wire. Why is there such a voltage drop? Thank you in advance for your answer.
