Commercially, Sly Cooper really was overshadowed by Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank. But it remains my favorite of the PS2 era platformers.

I believe it was the HD remakes that messed up the ms. Ruby battle. When I played the original, the beat was on point. It wasn't off at all. Damn you evil HD remakes...

Well, in the PS2 version Mz Rubys music is on key with the button presses. Only the HD collection has the timing issue

The original version didn't have that Mz Ruby glitch, that's just the HD version. To beat the HD version easily, turn off the music in the options.

I don't know if anyone else had said this, but, when the monkey guys (forgot name) remastered it for the PS3, they unfornutately changed the tempo of the music but not the keys for Mz Ruby.

Somehow Sanzaru managed to make the sound glitch in all 3 games on the HD collection, it is in fact also in 2 and 3.

Videos like these remind me that Antdude has been doing this for while. Kudos bro!

I played the sly series when it came out, such a good series. With the Jak and Daxter series aswell.

well the music is only off in the ps3 verison of the boss, it mach on the ps2 version

Oh Mz Ruby, now Mz Ruby's fight is my favourite boss in the game for me, since I am a sucker for rhythm based gameplay, and on PS2, the music is synced up perfectly, it's amazing, however the PS3 version ruins it and I had to just mute the game's music to get through it, however on the original PS2 game Mz Ruby's fight is completely fine. :D That still pissed me off to no end in the PS3 version though. ;-;

Another well done review. Once I get some extra time I'll have to give this series a purchase.

Ahh yes, the Sly Cooper series. One of my favorites! I played the series just last year (which is pretty recent, considering the 10 years) and I liked all 3. Glad to see this review, as it is a really well rounded set of games. Finding out there would be a Sly 4 was a bonus, since playing all 3 consecutively (in the Collection) left me with wanting more. Hope it delivers well.

Great review! Keep'em coming! Just to clarify, the Mrs. Ruby boss fight music is not synced right on the HD collection port but plays like butter on the original ps2 version. Sanzuru kinda drop the ball on that fight...

Grew up with Sly 2 & 3 and also the inFamous series. Sucker Punch's games have shaped so much of my life. I love the games.

i know this video is 10 years old but at 4:30 where he says “you just jump and press circle on literally EVERYTHING” my 20 year old self couldn’t contain it

I've played the whole trilogy, and I think I'm one of the few who thinks the first is far and above the best, all three are great

I actually like the first game the best overall. While it was nice to be able to play as other characters more in the sequels, and the concept of pulling a bunch of small jobs first to set up the main heist in each area was cool, the actual platforming really takes a back seat in all of the later games. All of the later games are only about 25% platforming, there just way too much other stuff. I DO have to say that Tennessee Kid Cooper in Thieves in Time had a super great playstyle though. I would seriously play an entire game about just him.

Damn! Now I feel like playing through this again. I need to catch up on my gaming damn it lol.

I got this for my eight birthday, it was amazing, and by far the best in the series.

I just started playing this game two days ago and I just beat it today. I quite liked the Miss Ruby boss fight, I did play the PS2 version though, so I did have the audio synced with the buttons. An amazing game series, and I can't wait to get the other games. The 4th game will be one of the first things I buy when I do eventually buy a PS3.

Thanks for making this review :D I've played the Sly Cooper series since it first came out and I've loved it all the time. 1 is actually my least favorite but it's still a great game. I'm extremly excited about Sly 4 on Monday knowing that Banzu will make it just as great as Sucker Punch. (They better or I'm going to write a very strongly worded letter.) Very nice touch with the Dimitri theme in the end ;)

Idk if it was just my game, but the Mz. Ruby section was completely fine for me.. like, in time & everything. I literally loved this game more than anything and have no bad things to say about it. I just wish the same art style was kept (colouring, drawing style etc) int the next games in the series lol

Sly's a great series. Sly Jak and Ratchet defined my childhood and I love them all equally. Sly 2 is my personal favorite.

I've always been a huge fan of this series. I remember Sly 3 being my intro into the series (don't ask why I started there) but I loved Sly 3. I played this game as a kid and I remember liking it but thinking it was hard. Then I bought the game a few years later and beat it with ease. I'm use to quick time events so I don't hate the Ms. Rupee boss fight. I would HIGHLY recommend this game to people who are looking for PS2 games, same goes for the other 2 games.

I remember playing the sly games at a friend's house when i was younger but i didn't buy Any of them until recently. They are all great games even though i didn't start really playing them till i was older.

I was lucky enough to play this as a kid, after I played Sly 3. I never beat the second level. Game was hard.

well in europe we called it Sly racoon and the thievius racoonus not only sly racoon, but i'm glad they change the name back to sly coper here in the Eu for the NeXT game

I beat the Miss Ruby boss fight by turning the music off and the sound effects up to maximum, so you can only hear sly shouting the moves. Made concentrating easier

Even tough the beat was right in the ps2 version, that part was still hard for me lol

i agree there are few stage i did't like in the first sly cooper mini games like the race and gunning down things , then the boss with miss ruby well i do agree with ya i hated its i die then die until i nailed it , but overall sly cooper games is the one my favorite game , despite it few pet peeve

7:45 Unfortunately you didn't mention that they took these out of the HD versions due to (my guess) copyright restrictions.

Now they all re-release on PS3 and I'm getting it.

I love this game so much. I didn't like it very much as a kid because of the simplicity and difficulty however I love how simple and hard it is. The fourth was WAY too complex but this one felt simple. I love how hard it is. In Sly 2 it takes forever to kill a bad guy, plus they attract other bad guys so you don't want to get spotted however this one felt more tense. Plus the music, in number 2 too, is amazing.

Mz. Ruby bossfight was only out of sync in the HD collection, but it was in sync in the original PS2 games, so Sucker Punch didn't mess that up. I actually found the Mz. Ruby battle to be awesome.

I hate the Mz. Ruby fight too. However in the original PS2 version, the music is actually in sync with the commands.

Miss Ruby was the best boss EVER if you ask me :D It actually was the only boss that I played multiple times after beating the game. I actually remembered it so well (after the first not "dancing" part) that I actually managed to play the whole boss my eyes closed! :D

6:56 See, I didn't get that as a kid, so these were TOO damn hard! Now I'm a complete BOSS at them though. 😎 Also, I think you get these after you beat a level regardless. No safe needed.

Was the recording of the game done on an emulator, or just a Ps2 system recording? I think the shots in the first boss world, with the fire-breathing walrus are very well visualized. I tried on a Ps2 emulator, and oh god is it awful for me. Slow, laggy frame-rates.

I've played the absolute hell out of sly 1 and I noticed the audio fuck ups as well except this was a fault in the hd remaster and not the original

Yeah it's different bigtime. I don't remember the timing in the PS2 edition being off to much in all honesty. It was probably one of those things that glitched up in the transition. Most ports have a few minor bugs.

It's funny. Mz. Ruby's boss fight use to take me a couple hours to beat how ever now I've played it so much I literally turn on this game just for the challenge of beating her and Clockwerk. I must be weird.

Damn, it feels a lot like Crash Bandicoot. It has this warp room thing going on, time trial and only one hit point. First time I played this game I was 17.

The Mz. Ruby boss fight was one of my favorite parts of the first game. Trust me, I've seen what the HD port did, and the original PS2 version of that level is much better. Not only is the music more listenable, but they matched it up to the visual cues pretty much flawlessly.

After this review, I bought Sly Racoon on Ps Vita and I quite enjoyed it. And then... the race level. It's so damn hard, that I coudln't finish the game.

Your complaint about the music being out of sync with the buttons in the battle against Mz Ruby is not very fair because the PS2 version of the game was in sync so it is the fault of the HD remaster not the game

OMG i am stuck on the miz ruby boss fight and i can not explain in words how frustrating it is i feel that i have come so close and then get knocked off and EVERY single time i felt like i wanted to crush the controller in my hands and throw its remains at my television

Thingus Raccamacunos lol Muggshot had the best lines in the game.

The only thing I can hate about Sly 1 is that sometimes in cutscenes when two characters are talking, like Sly & Mz. Ruby, they they look at the camera though still talking to the other character. Even then it's just a nit-pick. Sly 2. Its my favorite game of all time ever. Only complaint, you can't replay missions (well you can restart a world with a code, its not officially replay-able) Sly 3? Well, its the first game I played in the series, my childhood. I have no complaints. Sly 4 its definitely a change from the trilogy, though its still great. A few complaints would be, more Bentley & Murray missions. More enemies. (like really? I was looking around in the England world & could barley find any) Longer. Please Sanzaru. Make it longer. Better boss fights too, the mechanic of using the costume you got from that episode to beat he boss is kinda ripping off another game. I forgot what game, but its ripping something off. Why depressed Murray? What is so funny about a slightly over weight depressed hippo? It dragged away from the gameplay. Less frame rate lag.

At least maybe Jak and Daxter series. That was my first game on the Ps2, and I absolutely loved it. Jak 2 was my favorite in the series.

I played the third one and a bit of the others thanks to my cousin and I am just gonna go ahead and say it now but they were so awesome that I would only stop when it was time to go home or my cousin wanted to play

ok more games should do that because frankly that is way more interesting then concept art plus I'm pretty sure I'm pretty sure there are a lot of game developers that would love to brag about their masterpieces

Whoa sir, back up a bit, that mz Ruby fight wad the one that made me want to beat Raleigh and Muggshot as fast as possible, that battle was kick ass. if anything, the Muggshot fight was the only one I never replayed for fun. And to finish off my opinion, your reviews... Are fair at times, but try to be less biased about those boss fights.

8:58 Whoa whoa whoa you said you picked these up at a flea market, my guess PS2 (also your mentioning of the developer commentary). This issue wasn't in the original version of the game. (And a tip for all: Go to the game's pause menu and click, Music: Off to make the fight easier)

You should review or play the game “Dogs Life” on PS2. I swear that game gave me nightmares when I was a kid hahaha Graphics arent amazing but it came out ages ago and the story is so strange lmao

Love this game. I got100% completion in Sly 1 and 2. 80% in 3.

Personally I liked Carmelita's voice in Sly 2. I thought that was the only one where it wasn't cringe worthy. Maybe that's just because Sly 2 was the first one I played back in 2004.

This is a good review, but about Mz.Ruby's off sync battle was incorrect. The original PS2 version had perfect sync, and in fact, at the the beginning of the battle (when you had to ninja spire jump to get to Ruby) there was music in the original. Sanzaru handled the remake, and not only did they take the music out of the beginning of the battle, but they were also responsible for making that awful off-sync rhythm battle. (Not to mention other minor nits they did wrong when remaking the sequels)
