Okay, heres my personal theory. Salazar Slytherin thought this initially, but the founders didn't agree with it despite his understandable stance. After a while of pushing, the other founders start distancing themselves from him, and eventually, his at first genuine concern gets radicalized into what hes known for now.

Legitimate question, were they? Merlin of Arthurian legend was a student at Hogwarts, which suggests that the persecution of witches and wizards came much later than the days of Slytherin and Co.
@winterwine460
@winterwine460 19 дней назад
I think to add to this is the significance of Tom Riddle’s own mother, Merope. At first, Tom assumed he got his magic from his father until he couldn’t find any magical families named Riddle. Then he looked into his middle name Marvolo and found the Gaunts. If Slytherin’s children got their Parseltongue abilities from their mother, it’s a parallel between how Tom got his same powers from his mother’s family
@EmmaDavisWilliams

This theory is so interesting! One thing I'm getting hung up on is that Herpo the Foul was the first to breed a basilisk and also a Parselmouth all the way back in Ancient Greece. He was born with the ability way before Slytherin's time. So, I think it seems more likely to me that Slytherin was born a Parselmouth and that his ability to talk to snakes may have been part of what brought him and his wife together since they had that common language rather than him learning Parselmouth from his wife. Also, the fact that Herpo the Foul bred the first basilisk makes me feel a bit hesitant about the basilisk being an option for a maledictus to transform into. It seems to me like it's a non-natural animal similar to a mule or a liger, but we don't really have any rules around what a maledictus can become so who can say! Thanks for always sharing such interesting theories and finding new ways to explore the wizarding world! 🤗
@alexrobi1176
@alexrobi1176 11 дней назад
Yeah these were my thoughts too. The better question would be why Herpo the Foul was a Parseltongue.
@morrigankasa570
@morrigankasa570 6 дней назад
Herpo the Foul was also the first known Dark Wizard to create a Horcrux. What if Herpo was an Ancestor to Salazar Slytherin and he perhaps put his soul piece into his Basilisk & that process turned him into a Parselmouth? That's my theory, about how Herpo & Salazar's Line are the only known Parselmouths. Also about why Herpo & Voldy are so similar.

The pure blood angle is interesting because I recall hearing years ago that in media when a spell calls for "pure blood" laypeople think it means a virgin's blood, so they look for young children and such, but what it actually means is blood that has not been used in spell work before. So assuming what I heard when I was 10, is true it's a cool connection about how the idea of what pure blood means can be misinterpreted.

i really love the headcanon they've been making about salazar's intentions and beliefs just being twisted by time and others interpretations. it saddens me knowing that if we ever get actual info on that era they're just gonna find a way to mess it up so that "nope, slytherin is just as evil as we were alluding".

I have a simple answer. He made the employment contract cursed. We know that books can curse the reader. “You’d be surprised,” said Ron, who was looking apprehensively at the book. “Some of the books the Ministry’s confiscated Dad’s told me - there was one that burned your eyes out. And everyone who read Sonnets of a Sorcerer spoke in limericks for the rest of their lives. And some old witch in Bath had a book that you could never stop reading! You just had to wander around with your nose in it, trying to do everything one-handed. And -” -chamber of secrets I have to assume that there is some sort of employment agreement/payroll contract thing for teachers. Maybe it is on the wizard version of that.
@fishpie57
@fishpie57 20 дней назад
I like to think the curse was part of the Room of Requirement's defences of the diadem. I wonder if Riddle managed to get the room to become a highly secure magical vault for the diadem, and part of the defence was to get rid of the school's experts in DADA, who might work out how to destroy his horcrux. But Riddle didn't realise that the diadem would also appear in a room of hidden things, without its defences.

You could even add another level. Living hundreds of years wth limited contact to others could be a huge stressor for Mrs Slytherin. Her partner, kids and basically everyone who knew her as a person is long gone. Also there aren't many descendants left and those have adopted a hateful and dangerous ideology. In this scenario she can't resist orders in parceltongue, but is able to recognizes the events happening around her. After killing someone accidentally(Myrtle) and having to attack many muggleborns all of this could be enough for her. Tom commands her to fight Harry, but what if she didn't want to win? Even Harry's injury is more like collateral damage than a successfull attack.

My personal headcanon, actually formed after listening to the podcast Through the Griffin Door, is as follows: Slytherin was married to a witch, who at some point after giving birth to their first son or daughter, is captured by muggle witch hunters, and sentenced to be burned at the stake. Unable to cast a simple flame freezing charm as there was no place to learn such a thing prior to Hogwarts, she is one of the few witches to truly succumb to the flames and perished. Thus after, Slytherin felt nothing but anguish fuled rage towards the muggles, and felt that the muggle-born witches and wizards coming to Hogwarts were no better than those misguided people who had killed his wife. May not be true, but I dig it. Also, a quick P.S: I've been loving the TTGD podcast you guys have been doing. Great content, and some awesome early theory development within each episode. A wonderful breakdown of the first couple of books so far, very much enjoyed. Alread on POA Chapter 1, Owl Post, and looking forward to more! Definitely recommend

To add to that theory with one of my own that I had for a long time, namely that the basilisk never wanted to kill any students!! Like isn't it suspitious that every person in Harrys years got so luckly to only ever be petrified? That no one every died even Filchs cat? And that nothing ever happend to the bodys after they were petrified? Like the snake could have eaten them or at least tried to kill them another way the via deadly that that hasn't worked for the last 4 times, like it has the most deadly venom and even without its big enough to swallow a person whole but everyone just made it out fine asside from being petrified??and that even after they were petrified the basilisk never like ate the body or something? (Seriously how and what does the giant snake even eat?) And isn't it odd that the only confiremed kill is Mirtel? which many readers have long suspected to have been an accident since it happened in the bathroom with the entrance to the chamber so she might just have been unlicky by walking in on Tom entering/exiting the chamber with the basilisk. But if the basislisk was human once that would explain her not only being oddly smart but also why she would want to protect the students even against Toms orders

This literally changed my entire perception on Slytherin house. Misunderstanding everything SS stood for those that hated muggles flocked to Slytherin, a bunch became dark wizards, and that completely reshaped what it meant to be Slytherin over the centuries 🤯

I always love watching your Potter theories, even if they are weird. They are just a crazy as the wizarding world itself and im all in for it. Hope to see some more what if's in ths future. Really enjoy those videos especially these 2: • What If Harry Potter was in Slytherin. • What if Neville Longbottom was The Chosen One.

Also it's fascinating that Nagini's venom was used. It keeps wounds open and yet helped Voldy create a body. What if it's related to the love and friendship Nagini had for Voldy?

Can I implore SCB to drop BetterHelp as their sponsor, given the immense publicly available info on them and their shady business practices? Every subscriber you send to them who potentially has a bad experience given how important the service BH is supposed to provide is, is gonna leave a bitter taste in your subscribers' mouths. I just think it's better for the channel and their subs if we stop seeing BH as a sponsor.

I fricking LOVE this theory! It really repaints Salazar as a good, albeit flawed, person instead of this villain, and adds so much to the dynamic of the Founders. I would love to see this developped further, about how much love there was in his life and how he went through all of it. It does for an amazing story.

Love what y'all do and appreciate all the HP content. Theory question, what if in year 1 when Voldamort was possessing Q he actually followed his plan of wanting to Teach. Actually trying at the position. What would the class look like and would it break the curse he pot on it. If so how would the rest of the years play out
@alexandergreen9480

My headcanon from when I was a kid first reading the books was that the basilisk we see is not the same one that lived hundreds of years ago. Not that it's crazy for a magical creature to survive locked in a basement without food for hundreds of years, but we do know that basilisks are created from a chicken egg hatched by a toad. Given that Ginny is made to do other tasks in preparation for the monster such as killing all the roosters (a basilisks main weakness), I always thought that she hatched a new basilisk as one of her tasks. It seemed odd to throw the random detail of how basilisks are made if the only relevant basilisk lived for a thousand years without the need for food because they don't tell you how most beasts are made. It just felt a bit like Chekhovs gun to me with clues through the book, like "this creature's only weakness is the call of a rooster" > "Whos killin' all me Roosters??". Then, "this creature is created by a toad hatching a chicken egg" > "has anyone seen trevor???" Therefore, the basilisk is Trevors daughter 😝

Actually Slytherins weren’t the only parseltongues we know of. In the Fantastic Beasts book we learnt that “Herpo the Foul” who created the first basilisk was a parselmouth. As he created the first it stands to reason he was around before Slytherin. They could be related but we have proof of that.
