I'm often asked about my studio setup on social media, so I've created a tour video to share some insights!
If you're new here, my name is Shaymus and I'm an artist & art tutor. Setting up an art studio can be confusing, so I'm here to help. My studio is is quite small but works given all of the materials I need - this video will walk you through all of my storage & equipment recommendations.
Everything here, except for my Canon Pro-1000 printer which was generously gifted by my grandma, has been funded through my online art business, which I started after graduating in 2019. Proof that it's possible!

I know you are young, but if I can give you any advice for my many years. Your chair set up is awesome, but you should get some to cushion your elbow. I have found out the hard way that you have a never in you elbow that is you lean on your below for years it can become pinched. Maybe you can get a cushion like people get for their mouse and use it for your elbow. It may not hurt now but do the road you must like will pinch that nerve. It took me three hours to have the nerve back to normal.

Hi there, thanks for the comment. I haven’t experienced any discomfort at the moment but I was thinking about trying to get some memory foam there. I will definately keep that in mind 😊
@RebeccaRoebuck

Definitely as that's what I've done. It's your Ulna nerve which leaves under my arm from the elbow to my little finger and ring finger is very numb and has been for months now. You can also grow a bone spur at the side of your elbow where it becomes worn and calcified x
@michellelaw7550
@michellelaw7550 4 месяца назад
That’s an excellent point. I had the same problem as I have got older. The point of my elbow gets very bruised. I sorted it by resting my elbow on a ring doughnut shaped cat toy, now I no longer get a sore elbow. I do have to keep grabbing it back off the cats though 😂

Great ideas. Thanks. I’m going to steal the French cleat idea, but make a modification. I’m going to offset it from the wall and have the lowest point high enough so that I can fit my legs underneath while sitting. The space behind can be used to store large sheets of paper and/or gator boards etc.

Y'know, the devil works hard, but the algorithm works harder because it knew I would click for those leeeegs! But, I'm also a figurative oil painter so here I am learning to improve my space. Bouncing the strobes off the wall to diffuse them is really clever and I do love the french cleat wall since I paint on board, too.

Hi Shaymus, I have just completed the 2nd year of a fine art painting degree., and I can tell you that traditional portrait /figurative and realistic art is still not appreciated as much as abstract/modern art. I was using pastels for portraits in the 70’s (Yes, I’m soon to be 70, and an extra mature student! 😁). I love your work and hope to pick up from where I left off with your expert guidance.. Your room is so organised but this is something I doubt that I could achieve as I’m your typical messy artist! You deserve any success, well done!

I see you have clearly found organization is the key to success. Staying focused when you’re working is probably just as essential. you have set yourself up in a very intentional way that will increase your chances of living life the way you always hoped to- bravo! I am setting up a new studio myself. you have many great tips on technical aspects that are very helpful. I too use air purifiers and I’m looking for a new one, so I may look into your Phillips. The more you control your own world I believe the more successful you will be! I can see you are very talented and I think you will definitely go far. thank you for all of your efforts in this video and in passing on some of these unusual and very useful ideas for setting up studio in a small space in particular!

Amazing!!! 👏🏼 I am in the middle of reorganizing my art studio. I have watched many many you tube videos of art studio tours and art supply organization and yours is most definitely the THE best one I have come across. Your organization skills are amazing. To be honest I don’t think mine will ever be this organized. I have ADHD so nothing stays this organized for too long 😅 Thank you for taking the time to make this video and for the links. ❤

Thank you for a brilliant video on how to use a small studio place efficient and inspiring! I really liked the ”wall easel” you made! And I have to say I so envy your young eyes-I would love to be able to sit upright and draw/ paint but my old eyes-in spite of very expensive eyeglasses- need to be hunched over a strong magnifying glass these days! So for your excellent idea to be able to work for an oldie like me I would need to be able to come closer to the surface and then my knees would literally hit the wall. If anyone could come up with a solution to make such a great wall easel but w a sort of niche for the knees to go even an artist w as bad eyesight as me could work in comfort, that would be great! Perhaps some sort of boxlike construction attached firmly to the wall, and w the slats you use to attach your drawing board to also firmly fastened on the ” wall box”, would give space for someone sitting very close and then also be able to sit upright in a good position for the back ? Sorry If I ramble-my brain starts to figure out how such a solution would work. I suppose one could also attach a magnifier in the same way you made you brilliant Ipad attachment. I am sad ypu were discouraged from working realistically at art school-that is one of the reasons I never applied to one-I do not need to get horrible debts to learn to do installations and ” idea based art”.But perhaps the wind is changing-at leats at the foundation course level? My daughter just finished a foundation course and they were taught the basics w oil and watercolour and drawing models and still lofe and also did ceramics, sculpture and etching and engraving. But, even being a - in my eyes-a talented art student she decided not to waste four years in an art college ( university level) as they still go for conceptual art and such. I have a relative who ten years ago went to do art at Goldsmiths college in London and I was told their teachers hardly ever visited the students’studios!! They were just left to do their own stuff…but still had to pay horrible fees!!

I love the vertical cleat wall vs. an easel. I can see how it could be a huge space safer. I had an injury as a child that caused damage to the nerves that feed some muscles in my arm. Unfortunately, it's my dominant arm. As a result, I have to draw on a flat or slightly tilted surface so my forearm rests on the table. Otherwise my traps get extremely knotted and sore . I mention this because that mahl stick idea might work because my arm could rest on that, eliminating the need to use my muscles to hold my arm up. I have to give you a lot of credit for being so creative and figuring these challenges out on your own.

wow so cleverly organised and laid out! love your well thought-out studio, very inspiring and helpful ideas, thank you :) i'm in my final year of a fine art degree (at the age of 37) it definitely doesn't teach you any practical skills, I've had to learn painting, film-making, editing and photography through RU-vid. It's been challenging and frustrating at times, but the degree has taught me how to view art conceptually, apply art theory and given me a greater understanding of art practice which I am thankful for, and of course being surrounded by like-minded people who love to talk about art is great!

Faced with the same type of window air-conditioning situation a foam core board seal between opened window and it's frame will work wonders . A tidy sealing of triangulated boards ....at the open sides ....and a rectangular piece ( with a cutout for the air-conditioning pipe exhaust ) have worked well here in Winnipeg Canada for a number of years . ( Lately the window's were changed to a better configuration ) . The conditioner sits on a baking tray to catch occasional condensation .... and a second drainage tube ....18 " above the tray .... drains into a rectangular plastic pail ....purchased from the Dollar Store . All this has worked out just fine ( though required retaping once a year ) . All the best .

It was great to see you and your studio. You have a great setup. Thank you for sharing this with us. I can make a suggestion about the air conditioner: you might want to see if there is a way to better adapt the vent hose to your window. With the window open you must be loosing a lot of conditioned air. This will make your electric bill more expensive. You may be able to make an adaptor baffle with wood or foam board to reduce air loss. There will be inherent inefficiency due to the makeup air needed for a single vent design, but a better fit should save money. Don’t make the air seal too tight, as some makeup air is still needed, unless you have a dual vent model.
@shaymusart
@shaymusart 7 месяцев назад
Thank you! I did experiment with a couple of ways but because the aircon creates negative air pressure, it would always pull the foam board or whatever out. Portable AC’s arent the most efficient but it does still help when the day is at it’s hottest. Luckily I only have to use it in the summer, the rest of the year is fine. I might have to look at a duel model as that would work! Thank you for your comment 😊

Equipment can be expensive for sure but it’s a long term investment. I started with nothing after university and everything (apart from my printer) I saved up for overtime through revenue generated doing mostly pet portrait commissions. Once my equipment / space improved, so did my content so I guess like any business you have to spend money to make money.
