Small Chevy Towing Heavy: 2024 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Towing Review - Better than Tacoma?

The 2024 Chevy Colorado is rated to tow up to 7,700 pounds in most cases. We already tried it briefly, but on flat ground and for a shorter distance. Now it's time to put the #chevycolorado to the test while #towing 7,000 pounds of enclosed racecar trailer through the Blue Ridge Mountains to Summit Point Motorsports Park and back. This is a real-world test on a NASA race weekend, just load up the trailer and go! Maximum grade was between 4 and 5% incline/decline. Can the little Chevy handle it? How does the Colorado tow vs the 2024 Toyota Tacoma?

This is exactly the info I wanted to find. Thank you for the towing test.

2:58 Too many people do just that. I need to be able to tow a 7k trailer. thats all. I don;t need 15k capacity. I'm never going to use that.

I also tow maybe 3 or 4 times a year and in a basically flat area.

I got the same blue truck. Only issue is the “miles left” gas calculation. It doesn’t compensate for the load. So I ran out of gas way quicker than the numbers said. 😢

Seemed a bit noisy up those grades but otherwise sounds to be potent enough for most of whatever people would throw at a midsize. Even in a half ton I’ve heard good things. My only concern would be for long term ownership if you did that type of tow regularly. I can imagine EGTs get pretty toasty when it’s deep into boost for longer durations.

SP is my home track and I’ve got a 2024 z71 Colorado that I intend on doing basically the same thing in! What are the chances haha. Thank you for making this video!

Thanks 4 this review. I've bought over a dozen new trucks over the last 3 decades, most being Fords. I avoided GM trucks because they were always chasing the competition with inferior products (with the exception of a 1st gen high-stance with locker GMC Canyon for a 2nd home in Ga). I have abandoned Ford with my last 3 vehicles: '99 Ram 1500 L Horn and '21 Ram 1500 Lariat and now a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon (Mar 02, 2024). Before buying the Gladiator, I had ordered an F150 but cancelled when even Consumer Reports gave them a terrible review. Tried to order a Ranger - a complete joke - who knew when (still would not be here today), the "late availability" upgraded 2.7 is still is not available for order today!!! Cancelled that order, too!!! What is up in Dearborn? GM is now in the running for my next truck. They have stepped-up their game and have found Ford vulnerable, in the truck market, IMO. Again, thanks for the review.

All midsize trucks have has some major issues. The colorado had roofs denting at carwashes and the infotainment giving all kinds of problems. I think the chevy/gmc is the best looking truck of the bunch. However, if ford can turn their recall issues around I think the 2.7 Ranger is probably going to be best midsized truck IF you have trailers and do any towing. The 2.3 in the standard ranger has been pretty reliable and also competes close to the level of the chevy but I think once the 2.7 in the ford is out that will be the game changer. The 3.0 in the raptor is an impressive engine but the power zapped out with the lager tires and heavier weight. The tacoma just doesn't do it for me in looks or specs. The frontier with the naturally aspirated v6 is probably the best value truck because its typical for people to negotiate $3-5K off msrp but its a bit outdated. Its a hot segment though and fun to watch them battle it out.

I am stuck between the Z71 with towing package and tech 2 and 3 package and toyota tacoma TRD Off road with the new hybrid set up. I am just stuck. I Just drove a Z71 today and it was nice but I am nervous to sell my wifes Rav4 and get a Colorado Z71. Any input? I am a Lexus/Toyota mechanic but the new tacoma isnt doing so well in the ratings.

The GMs tow better and I prefer how they drive overall.

How is cabin noise on the highway? I read a review that says wind noise due to a pillar is annoying.

I think these are the new half ton. Silverados and f-150s have higher ratings and are larger in every way then 3/4 tons of 20 years ago.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports 2 месяца назад
Yep, everything has become a bit larger and more capable and an F-150 today can do SO much more than an F-150 of 15+ years ago.

I find it weird that the Work truck would have a base motor and towing: Landscape, Traffic Control arrow board, Construction.
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports 4 месяца назад
The base motor is there for buyers (fleets) who don't need the extra power and torque for a variety of reasons. But if they do, the TurboMax engine is available for about $1,300 on the W/T.

I noticed that you did not have any side mirror extensions. What was your feeling on the stock mirrors, especially with a trailer that width and length?
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports 4 месяца назад
They were fine once you got used to 'em. Just wide enough to see safely. Extensions would help some but didn't really feel 100% required.

Is the brake controller aftermarket??
@OutMotorsports
@OutMotorsports Месяц назад
No, this truck had the Advanced Trailering Package which includes a built-in trailer brake controller.

I didn't see exact numbers (had navigation up on the infotainment, though it can show exact numbers on that same screen) but it got to ~3/4 up the gauge at most. Well within an acceptable range for climbing a decent hill!

I am a Tacoma fan; however, the Colorado tows more, hauls more, and offers more value. But, reliability???

Great video. Informative. Shopping for a midsize truck to tow our Casita travel trailer (2,900 lbs loaded). Much less than 7,000 lbs!
@spyder000069
@spyder000069 4 месяца назад
@@deanmay338 Keep in mind weight is only half of the equation. WInd resistance takes just as much if not more performance from the engine. Most people will go by the 80% rule so 7700 rated capacity means you really only want about 6160 lbs which gives you leadway for other conditions (wind, hills, hot day, etc).
