you are by far my favorite person on youtube, your channel reminds me of how beauty yt used to be before it was capitalised and the youtubers i used to watch either got big and unwatchable or stopped posting. i love how you speak intelligently and emotionally about beauty. while you were talking about poetry i thought about a podcast where one of the hosts sometimes shared a short poem or a few lines from a longer poem at the beginning and i thought maybe that is something you could do at the start or end of your videos. i would really enjoy getting some curated fragments of poetry from you, then i could go look up the author or ponder the words you shared. i think i would be a lovely way to get back in touch with poetry because like you said, it can be a little daunting. just an idea maybe for next year :) best wishes from germany :*

I haven't finished the video yet but hearing you choke up about poetry and writing really moved me, and I wanted to tell you that your eloquent videos and just you mentioning your writing in previous videos have prompted me to pick up writing again. I'm just doing some practice work for now and I doubt I'll complete NaNoWriMo but I've skipped about two years of writing, and loathed myself for it but was unable to kick myself back into it. I'm back into trying and hoping to never stop again. Much love to you for that.

Hello! I've been binge watching your videos over the last week and I am enthralled! The bit that you always say at the end about doing your work in the world makes a little tink on my consciousness every time I hear you say it. I really appreciate you explaining it more in this video. I have been struggling lately with what to do with my life other than just work to live, and the concept of having "your work" as a purposeful mission just makes so much sense this morning! My sister has children who are currently her life's work, and I think a lot of content people have a drive to do things in a field that they are passionate about. I'm not sure right now how to go forth into the future and do my life's work, but your videos and channel have inspired me to do some deep thinking on the subject. Thank you for all that you do!

I was so touched by your video in many ways. I don't know a lot about poetry but would eagerly watch any content you created. I am in awe of you with your elegance, and all of your talents and passions. I hope somehow Kimberly Clarke sees this video and reaches out for a collab. It's interesting that RU-vid has changed so much... before I started watching for the Beauty channels and it became a form of entertainment like reality T.V., I only accessed it as a reference for videos on things like "how to fix the toilet" or "how to do a double crochet stitch". My kids and their friends were the ones who were following RU-vidrs like Miranda Sings and my daughter got me started with the beauty channels. I hope you are feeling better and have a lovely weekend. xo

I would love to learn more about poetry from u Hannah. Ive had a long case of depression issues that started due to a breakup. Im better now , and i cannot believe i wasted years mourning for someone who did not deserve to be loved that badly. I began feeling better as i started to write ot out in form of poems. They werent any good poems but just words that let me pour my anger, sorrow , depression whatever i felt to my bones. Poetry just helped me find self love . But id love to learn more about poetry now as art. The history, technicality side of it. ... Whoa!! Im just trying to say that id love to see a poetry channel of yours :)

Hannah, I've been really enjoying your videos, they've really inspired me to moderate and reconsider (impulse) purchases, and influenced how I think about consumerism. I've been slowly decluttering all things in my life in the past one and a half year, trying to create more physical and mental space. I've found it sometimes a real challange, but a much needed change. Coming from a country with a communist past, some things come really natural to me, such as trying to fix things instead of purchasing something new, but I've noticed how I've slowly grown and also inherited some bad consumerist habits which I am trying to rid myself of. You've also reminded me of the fun being had in simply enjoying what i already own. As your no buy year is coming to an end, I'm curious, are you planning on continuing making videos? As a side note: I purchased the Korres Wild Rose sleeping facial and it's great, thank you for reviewing it. However the lady at the counter told me it might be getting discontinued, and checking their website it does seem suspiciously out of stock... Just a heads up, I'm sure you will still be able to find it in January if you decide to repurchase. :) Take care!

I am so happy I found your channel. I’ve written this before but I’m also a writer...a poet. I appreciate beauty in all forms and I love that I found someone else who shares those same appreciations. I’m still struggling with the superficial stereotypes of the beauty community but your channel is helping me understand that better. I’m doing a no buy year in your inspiration and I’m really excited. Thank you for all the work you’ve done so far this year. Edit: I would love to see a video on your origin story of your writing career. It’s tough to make it in poetry and it’s something I’ve been struggling with since college many many many moons ago...like a decade. The wold of print and media has changed so much since the early aughts.

you have no idea how much I needed to hear this - being an artist requires a robust life. I am working on my writing and my music and I seem to meet a lot of artists with lonely, money-stricken lives who frown at me for working/living in the real world. Life has to be deep AND broad so you have something to write and sing about - that is how I feel and now I have an expression for that feeling. Thank you so much, Hannah!

This was really thought provoking for me Hannah, thank you for the continued intelligent content! I had never realised that the closing statement ends “your work in the world” as I think the music kicks in over “the world”, it really resonates with me now, my ‘work in the world’ is so very different from my actual daily work and I feel we should all put more energy into what makes our hearts sing. As someone who loved being an English major, I think reading/experiencing good poetry is such a pleasure. Even when I read novels or essays, I feel writings are elevated to another level when they incorporate elements of poetry, like Toni Morrison's Beloved or Gabriel Marquez' One Hundred Years of Solitude. I think of poetry as the writing "gift" that keeps on giving, because I can think about what I read on subsequent days or weeks and make more connections and understandings. I was lucky enough to be an undergrad at Williams when Louise Gluck was teaching there and I think it made the rest of the excellent faculty 'up' their teaching game w/r/t poetry even more. Thanks for tagging Genevieve Fields on this tag; I can't wait to see her video. I think that Genevieve also talks like Kimberly Clarke a lot actually (dramatic; sarcastic; ironic, self-aware, over-the-top sense of semi-insanity, lol etc.) and I love it. (Btw, it was *HILARIOUS* when you jokingly inserted the video "announcing" your egg breeding channel.) XO, Julie

@@HannahLouisePoston How wonderful that you were able to have lunch with her! If she gave one of her readings, I hope you enjoyed it; I took a friend to one at the 92nd St Y, and my friend was so overcome by the experience that she insisted on buying The Wild Iris right then and there and getting it signed. :-) It would definitely be fun to have an occasional lit/poetry "jam session" in the comments on your channel if you want to post videos that incorporate literature once in a while. I don't know if you have found Daniela Zarate (Danibo)'s channel yet, but she has posted several book/makeup videos, where she talks about a book and then creates an editorial makeup look inspired by it. If you read through the comments in those videos, you see there are quite a few of us literature lovers in the YT beauty community. And Dani is lovely; she and I share many of the same values about feminism, intellectual curiosity and cultural inclusivity.

Thanks for sharing! I think the shame you feel might be because you feel vulnerable. I think it's natural... but allowing yourself to be vulnerable is so beautiful and it is the best way, I think, to truly touch and move people. I adore the books written by Ellen Hopkins. I think it would be cool if you wrote an article on your blog or kept a running list of your favorite poems and/or poets. I have always loved to take note of when someone mentions their favorite poet so I can go back and look in to that post. I need to remember to actually go find the poets work. * Idea: I like watching Coffee Break With Dani and she'll mention life style favorites in her monthly favorites. You could always incorporate your love for poetry in to something like that :)

Liz Gilbert in Big Magic referencing Einstein about alternative forms of creativity to fuel the writing itself. I both dabble in creative writing and make my living as a writer (lawyer), but painting is my main gig. It's not my livelihood and that was an intentional choice for reasons too long and complicated to explain. But writing, cooking, makeup, living, all of that goes into maybe two paintings, maybe four, a year. And so when I am not painting, I am flexing the creative muscles in a bunch of ways. And also, as you will say a year later, having the mental and creative space to have an internal life. Maybe not this week when law career is crazy hectic, but honestly most weeks. And that is why I watch your channel with such passion. Because it allows me to do the kind of thinking about all the kinds of things I enjoy that spark interest in all of my creative ideas. So when you talk about poetry, I think not only about poetry, which I love to write and love to read more, but mostly painting.

your stomach,is totaly unnessesary, because the most beautifull about your Chanel is that you are so open and genuine.I learned a lot from you since Januari,I started my no buy also in Januari, and I was searching on you tube,if there were more people who did a no buy,I was interrested in that because it’s always helpfull when more people are doing the same thing so you can change information with eachother about that project, and at the same time you can find help with eachother, when somebody has a difficult time, just share things with eachother to help, because we are all in the same project/situation.I learned a lot last year and I deffinetly grey as a person, and that was one of my goals by doing my no buy,to learn and grow, and you helped me maybe without knowing thru Some tough times, but I managed it,just like you and I think many other subscribers.I had never in my life something with poetry, but when I got ill,I learned to know somebody on Facebook with the same illness as I have, and that woman writes so many and beautifull poetry about EDS,and more important about the feelings that people get by being so sick, and having a body that doesn’t work along with our minds, she writes mostly about EDS,feelings, loosing control about your body, and how to get along with all,the medication, the pain, doing to much, expectations from others, how other people look at this illness, place everything, and she wrote a few boots with poems, but she post on a regular base a poem at the EDS page,I started to read these poems, and these poems makes so many emotions loose with me,that I can’t get enough from her poems, she write Some poems in dutch and Some in English, under the name x-tien,by this I started to like Reading poems,I love poems about feelings, and emotions.Maybe it would be nice to introducé us as subscribers with your poems, maybe it’s nice to read a poem that you write,or showing us a written poem in one of your lovely video’s,maybe it’s a great idea to combine Some things in a video, you also can show us something about your tango dancing, and the beautifull clothes you make,or sometimes a poem.I Think that you can combine more subjects about your lifestyle and work in your beautyvideo’s,It’s always worth to try it because I think that a lot of people are unknown with poetry, just like me until a few months ago,and you can always see about the comments what people think about that,or you can see on the Numbers if those video’s get more vieuwers,or subscribers. But I realy think that you are talented in so many different ways, beauty is something that many people love to watch, but I think that more of your subscribers are curious about all the rest in your life and work, just because you have a nice close group of subscribers, and they all love your Chanel because of that beautifull genuine person that you are.I would love to see a beauty video which starts or end with a beautifull poem,or I would like to see a video, where you put your dance make-up on,and show us a beautifull tango,or a video where you get your make-up ready for a beautifull photoshoot with all that beautifull clothes you make.Just by combining a few of your beautifull creativitys can give you a lot more subscribers,or people who get interrested in your poems, clothes,or dances, and than you can put Some information about those products,or how people can buy those items,in your videoinformation.i just think about these combinations because you are such a talented woman which works so incredibly hard, that maybe your products Will sell faster, because a lot more people get to see how talented you are,and when ther are a lot of people interrested in one of your buissinesses than you always can make sepperate you tube Chanels, for example a beauty Chanel, and a poetrychanel.I Know I love your beautychanel more than other ones just because you have a Chanel where you don’t need to keep up with the newest products, but you learn us to work with the things we already have, and that we almost have dupes for every colour, and that you don’t need to use always the exact colours to create a fantastic look. And you helped so many people with the wrong shoppinghabbits.I gave your Chanel to many people which have so many depts by buying all new make-up,or having a shopping addiction,or a hoarderingproblem with make-up,and you helped so many people by being so open about your own situation. You helped me as well, even if I already started my no buy,you helped me to get a totaly different mindset, and that I was hoardering beautyproducts just by buying way to many drugstoreproducts which were on sale,I always needed to buy those, and because I still have so many products,I Will go on with my no buy for as long as I have way to many make-up,and I Will sharpen my rules next year about buying clothes and housewear, and I wanted to start decluttering everything in the house, room by room,to get more space because of my bed in the livingroom and my wheelchair, but I also want a little more minimalistic life,to get more rest in my head, and I know that Will take a long time because of my EDS but I Will have the whole year of 2019for that.Hannah Thanks again, for this beautifull video, you’re the best, xoxo wendy

Hi, Hannah. I just discovered your channel a few days ago, and I’ve been binge-watching your videos every time I need a break from planning the college writing classes I teach (our semester begins next week). It all makes so much sense now! Of course one of the reasons you really resonate with me is that you are a poet! Very pleased to learn this about you and to “get to know you” through these videos. Thank you for sharing them with the world! And if you start a poetry channel, you’d have me as a subscriber in a heartbeat. Wishing you the best, Maggie

Ms Hannah! I hear you on the point where the people who misconstrue a point, or take a point out of context, and pass judgement or come to a head-scratching conclusion as a result. (IE you bought something during your no-buy, therefore all no-buys cannot work and your no-buy failed.) Rest assured, the vast majority of your viewers “get it”. I know you want to ensure you’re clear; I find you more than clear.. however, you could explain everything like your audience was 3 year olds and there would still be those few who don’t understand- and infinitely more maddening- the ones who CHOOSE not to understand. For the sake of what, exactly? A chance to passive aggressively snark? Rain on someone’s parade? Troll? But we are all at different places in our infinite journey. I read several times that the average IQ is about 105, which I can never believe. That would mean fully half of us are BELOW that. There will always be someone who doesn’t “get it”. But it’s not you, it’s them. Further, if you changed your verbiage for a small subset it would change what the rest of us enjoy watching. An articulate, educated dynamic woman who doesn’t apologize for who she is or feel the need to dumb things down for the lowest common denominator.

Hannah, not sure if you’ll see this, as this video is months old by now, but I have a story to share that you may find amusing! I, too, am very drawn to Kimberly Clark; her humor and use of language, I just “get” her, and found myself very disappointed when she left You Tube, when was it, maybe a year and a half ago? Anyhow, I was recently at my local grocery store, and had to use the restroom. I’m squatting there in the stall, looking around at the “decor”, when suddenly it occurs to me that the toilet paper holder has the following branding on it: Kimberly-Clark. I am now loling from within the stall, trying not to sit upon the dreaded toilet seat. I had wondered about her drag name choice and the origins of such were now quite clear.😂😂 It makes total sense, drag queens usually choose their names based upon word play combinations that are either risqué or even grotesquely sexual or else have to do with representing beauty out of context, and turning ugly words into more freeing terms. I absolutely butchered that description I was trying to make, so if you want to help me to say what I am struggling to say in your response, I would greatly appreciate it!!! Anyhow, perfectly on brand for Kimberly, I feel that her choosing that particular name is both tongue-in-cheek toward the usual, deeper meanings behind drag name choices, AND, sort of simultaneously mocking the origins of drag names in a playful way? What are your thoughts on that idea? Please tell me your thoughts on this if you understand what the heck I am trying to say! I really love Hannah (@SmokeyGlow) and also enjoy her humor and wit, as well as her fiery personality, so I’m pleased to know that you watch her as well! I also could not be more in agreement with your statements about why you chose to start a channel! I too watch far more You Tube than any person probably should! I work 3 night shifts per week as a Labor and Delivery RN, and have done so, along with various other nursing jobs simultaneously throughout the past 20 years (hospice, institutional psych, and corrections nursing) though always night shift. I would sleep in the day and be up at night even on my nights off so as not to lose a whole day switching to days and then another day lost switching back every week...anyhow, I do everything in the night when the rest of the house is sleeping soundly, from laundry, vacuuming and deep cleaning areas to cooking (meal prep) and going to the gym (24h gym) to showering and journaling and Bible study to even socializing with other night shift nurse friends who were in the same boat! Traditionally I am not a tv girl, as I like to learn if I’m watching... even if I am simply learning about the beautiful intricacies of other people’s lives, or something as basic as makeup application, that to me still counts as valuable learning...Enter You Tube! I will have it playing through everything I am doing, much the way others play music... I would love to start a channel to participate, in precisely the way you described, in the community, given the time spent currently watching🤓🤓🤓. Unfortunately though I have huge involvement in a multitude of issues which I wish to make people aware, and thereby help other girls and women , I am not sure if You Tube is the best way for me to bring attention to these issues, or if perhaps writing a blog might be better. Anyhow, I enjoyed this video very much (just as I enjoy all of your videos!!). Thank you for your insights, and for tolerating that inner discomfort you feel when posting a very revealing video, long enough to allow for the growth that comes as a result. May God Bless you, and all the work you are doing in your own life to grow and be the very best version of yourself, as well as the fact that through broadcasting it all, you are helping so many other women, and probably men too, to begin to examine these same issues in their own lives! ❤️😁❤️😁❤️😁❤️

I finished reading 'The Princess Saves Herself In This One' by Amanda Lovelace and have been needing something new. If you'll start your egg breeding channel I'll start my butterfly breeding one and we could collab! 😝 (lol, but seriously my son&I are breeding every summer one or two butterflies from worms finding in our garden 🐛)

That is SO cool! I once hatched a monarch butterfly from a cocoon when I was a kid, but there aren't any in LA :(

@@HannahLouisePoston We don't have monarchs here either. We usually breed some random moths but this year I found a great green worm and we raised a swallowtail butterfly, one of the biggest and prettiest living in my country 💖 Yeah, I am normal, right? 😋
