Great job on your video. I just finished watching a dozen or more other engine repair videos which were pretty rough. By every comparison, yours is a great example of how a video should be done. It was thought out, set up with good sound and light, and the information was presented in a concise and effective way. Thanks!

That is the first small Tecumseh OHV lawnmower engine I have ever seen for a walk behind mower. They must be pretty rare. I guess they only made those engine's a very brief time before they went under. Ive never seen one in person and I have dealt wit hundreds of mower's.

Ya, you usually think of a flat head when you think Tecumseh.

The crows foot should be used at a 90 degree angle to the torque . That gives you the indicated torque. Straight out in front will increase the torque over the indicated value. So always at 90 degrees to the wrench. How do I now? I was a tech at a Harley dealership for 10 years. Things you need to know.

good video. Great video quality and focus on the subject at hand!! B& S tells you to go 1/4 inch past TDC to adjust valve lash. I'm told this is to get past compression release bump on camshaft. Is that not the case with Tecumseh?

@smallengineshop Thanks for the answer. Now another question, wherd'd you get the confidence to feel like you could do it? Serious question.

I started out with a 5 hp Tecumseh. It needed a carb, rebuilt. But it was bad. So I got a new one. After a few pulls I lost all compression. Checked the valves and they were so lose they would not sit on the rod and springs. Watched your video and did as you said to do. Why would someone take the kill switch and ground it to the frame ? The coil is bad. Oddly the guy who owns this says No one has ever worked on this engine.

You usually front have to replace them gaskets in fact you almost don't need them because the oil is not compressed. Head gaskets are a different story.

Good Video. Question : My OVRM120 will not hold the lash adjustments, so the a comp release does not work well. Last adj I found the intake locknut valve loose even after torquing to spec (for my t-wrench/crowsfoot I calc 8 % less). I also found the studs stretch while torquing and opens clearance, which I then re-adjust correctly. It is running lead due a carb that needs cleaning/rebuilt. So, maybe the added heat an affecting torque/lash. Loctite on locknuts? Any other ideas?

Can valves being out of adjustment cause a popping sound through the muffler? It's not a backfire, just a popping sound. It's pretty consistent. I tore the carb apart and cleaned and adjusted. Drained fuel, replaced fuel line. Put in new spark plug. The rider had been sitting for a couple years. It seems to pop with or without an air filter on it (the air filter is old but I've been using it).

What causes the push rods to keep bending on a snapper ride mower 14.5 hp .

Resistance. I've seen valve stems gummed up from bad fuel bend push rods.

I have a quick question. I completely took apart my spar lawn mower engine to thoroughly clean it. The problem I have ran into is this, I cannot find a cheap piston ring compressor. My piston has 3 rings and I can't put them in by hand. I bought a cheap one from Harbor freight but it is too big.

Feeler gauge should be almost snug your was too loose incorrect Setting needs to be tighter

@Mr_Tecumseh
@Mr_Tecumseh 8 лет назад
At this point you can jut go to Tecumseh.com or google it. They have been out of business for 8 years all of those manuals are available to view free now. But you could also just search your engine's specific clearances. You don't need the manual. Your making it harder then it has to be for yourself. Its the information age, just look it up.

No need to really. They are also 3/8" outside hex, so a standard box/open end wrench or socket will work.

never really cared for Tecumseh too much, much prefer briggs. some of the older Tecumseh flatheads were fairly good engines, i just dont think they were ever as good as briggs or kohler. i dont like newer Tecumseh carburetors at all. i had a late 90's sears walk behind with a Tecumseh that always ran poorly from day one. i swear it was the newer carb design. i think they went out of business because their products weren't that great
