Small Engine Starter Drive Setup THIS WORKS GREAT!

This is the hot setup for starting small engines also eliminating the possibility of injury when engines start. It spins the Honda 350x over like crazy where them can be stubborn to get running at times. I always wanted to build one of these dog clutch starter drives but with the broken leg made this idea even more practical. One wouldn't even need a lathe to build one, just use/grind some washers for spacers and weld things up. I included a bunch of footage where several fails happened but as usual - very educational, another learning experience! Here's a link to the awesome drill I am using.
www.amazon.com... It features High efficiency brushless motor delivers up to 57% more run time over brushed with amazing torque. Several quick notes I should of included too - To final test I left the machines outside overnight where it was below zero. The drill worked great (better). One other note - those machines do have a compression release. The kicker can be held down slightly and then released, that did work every time.... Just didn't show that on camera. Thanks everyone for stopping by, Jeff.

Respect from the United Kingdom pal!, you probably saved me from injury because I was gonna use a normal drill to get my 200 cc 4 stroke go cart to start because the pull cord is broken and I think it’s also flooded so I have been struggling to get the thing going and it used to get started on the first pull.

I really enjoy every one of your videos. Just remember your wheelchair is temporary. I am in a wheelchair permanently. It's not so bad for me because I still have one leg to stand up and work under the hood and have a midrise lift that my wheelchair fits under. I've been working on cars professionally for 23 years, after I was injuried if been working in my wheelchair for 9 years and have adapted quite well. I can still do everything I used to be able to do in my wheelchair at my home shop, even heavy work. Stay positive my friend as it's the best way to overcome an obstacle. My home shop is much smaller than yours, but it is as organized and well thought out as your shop. I really like your ideas

Hey Jeff Dewalt has a new line of tools called Flexvolt. The batteries can be used on any Dewalt 20v tools. It's a 20v/60v battery. More mA on 20v tools or standard on 60v tools. They are pricey but maybe they could be used on your project. By the way there is also an adapter that lets you use the newer 20v batteries on the older 18v Nicad tools.

Hay brother get a 12 volt starter for a polaris 400 2 stroke scrambler. it has a gear reduction drive and is about the size of a brigs & stratton starter but with the power of a car starter. then get an old 10 speed bike and rob the gear set off the rear tire. it will spin one way and free wheel the other. weld the 10 speed gear to the starter gear then weld your cranking sprocket to the other side of the 10 speed gear. now take one of your 12 volt drill lipos and wire to it with a switch. now make a small box to house all this in and you are good to go. or better than this is to just buy a hand held 12 volt remote starter like the ones the go cart racing community use to crank thee modified engines. those work amazing and would crank your atv all day no problem at all and cost you less than that big ass drill probably did! hahahah love ya bro, glad to see you thinking outside the box. i live outside the box! visit me sometime.

Aw man! Loving that. I'm definitely going to be ripping an old starter apart now and rigging that up. The old honda's with points, if they aren't running right, its torture to keep kicking them over and over again. Its so nice to be able to sit next to it, and just spin the engine over. Thanks for that info Jeff!!!! Great video as always sir. :)

Hi there Tom. I have a wingnut on the crankcase plug now so no tools needed other than the drill setup. Always wanted to build one of those starter drives. Left the Honda's and drill/battery outside overnight to see how good when freezing out. Spun the engine over like crazy. Just can't get over the torque that battery powered drill had.

Here’s a thought Jeff. Try a little different technique in how you apply the drill. When you hit the button, hold loosely on the drill and let the handle slip or rotate a bit before you catch it firmly, kind of clutch it by hand. Not too loose. You don’t want it to get out of hand. But that way the drill is moving when the sensor checks and maybe it adds a little zip on the initial punch too. Loved that shot of the bird on the silo. Really captures a moment in Midwest landscape and outdoors when you panned out. Be real youtube, face life without the booze.

Interesting thought - I shall have to try that. Left the machines out in the cold all day and overnight (25 degrees) along with the drill and battery. Was surprised. Not scientific here but It seemed to work even better. Beats using the foot if it was available for....

The drill starter is a good Idea especially for those who may only occasionally need to start a small engine. For those who need to start engines on a more or less regular basis I think a portable starter made from a car starter and a lawn battery is more the ticket. Similar to the starters they use on formula 1 cars or racing go karts. Should be very easy to build and fairly cheap too if you use junk yard parts. Even a starter from a lawn tractor would probably turn that honda engine just fine, paired with a 7 amp hour SLA battery it would be reasonably light weight as well. Anyways just thinking out loud.

Thanks for you build !! Great idea !! Liked !! From my background in electronics, I would say the voltage drop on the hanging battery is enough to cause it to supply less than 1/3 of the current that would be possible if it had heavy wire. It looked like you used 12 gauge wire which is good for 20 amps which seems like that is ok ... but that 24 inches ( i figured 6 in x 4 - each battery for each color) of 12 g wire offers a lot more resistance than the battery that is hooked directly to the drill. In addition i guess it's the current regulator on the motor that is kicking out ... so even with a bigger battery you will probably still have the problem - i am only guessing on that :) Good Luck !!

Hi Tony. If you meant to use for the cranking purpose the impact's are a different design to obtain the torque with a hammer effect. I did use an impact to tighten the crankshaft bolt a bit above normal where it is being turned backwards (loosen direction) to start the engines in an abnormal way... You bet, did follow your thought idea for sure!

That gel cell that you connected up doesn't have the high amperage discharge rate like those lithium-ion batteries. The gel cell will struggle to discharge at 30 amps but the lithium batteries will produce over 100 amps or more. I learned about batteries way back when I was racing RC cars. Yep, had a few hard lessons in batteries.

With your battery setup hooking them in parallel like that won't double the current it will just double the life of the battery or in other words how long it will last before it dies and you need to charge it again, of course hooking it in series would give you 40 volts but the same amount of life as one of the batteries..... However because of the circuitry attached to the batteries and in the drill I'm pretty sure everything's regulated to that 20 volts so even if you put 30 volts to it the motor in the drill is still only going to get 20 or I think it's 18 actually

Great stuff Jeff just thought you might have better luck with a brushed dc motor since brushless uses a confusor to turn the zeros and 1s on and off with protection circuitry

the reason why more amps makes the stop issue worse is there is less voltage drop under load, computer senses greater potential for damage/heat buildup, then shuts down quicker than if you used a lower amp battery setup. probably would still crank the beast over quick with a small battery

Good video. I have to make me one of these. Maybe use your foot starter to turn the engine to TDC on a/the compression stroke. Too bad there is no compression release. I have a little 3hp briggs that I was starting with a 1/2" drill with a 1/4" socket extension. After it kicked back twice it twisted off the extension. Pulled out my hair on that one. Turned out the flywheel was not a great fit to the crankshaft. A session with valve lapping compound fixed it.

Neat write up you had there Dan! Actually the second gen engines do have a compression release. I did film reaching over the seat, holding light pressure on the kicker and as you suggested/thought that did work perfect every time. We were up north in the cold last weekend and everything worked wonderful. It was below zero in the mourning. The 350 wouldn't start after a long crank. Forgot to turn switch to run - duh..... ;>)

Should be the same current for a longer time. If the battery is low, the current will drop.

Hi Jeff love your video, just a thought, try a starter motor off a car like a small smart car.

Jeff, thanks for the video. I have an outboard motor that I need to rig up DIY starter for. They offer an electric starter kit, but charge $750 for it. I was wondering how to make a safety drive & the Chevy starter drive unit looks like the answer.

From Brazil thanks Jeff!!! Keep doing great videos like that. could u tell me if this Dewalt is stronger than makita 481, makita 481 is the strongest. 120 newton.

Hi there. I can't answer that. I do know that Dewalt is very powerful tho. Couldn't believe it would turn over the engine without even using the compression release in second gear.

Hi Jeff, Great video. It is absolutely essential to have this DIY drive adapter for this job. Although I have a drive adapter for my Craftsman weed eater, I did not know, it had a free wheeling shaft. For other equipment I used the drill machine. I have started various motors with my DeWalt DC995 without the adapter without any problem. However, recently I reckoned my drill machine and had to buy a new one, now DC998. The kick back of the motor ruined my planetary gear in the drill machine! I have searched the internet for an adapter like yours, but could not find it. I could send you a picture of the damaged planetary gear, if I new your email.

Hey there good Sir. I know that this video is several years old, but wanted to know how you are doing this without the bolt coming lose. Looks like one of your answers was to use a drill instead of an impact gun. Is that correct? I want to do this on an NSR50 and and NSF100 with a super high hp and compression stroker-big bore motor. Did you have to drill out the access port or was that motor already setup with the access? My motors don't have one. Thanks in advance
