Stevie Marriott is one guy who no one has a bad word to say about, always gets great appreciation whatever he did. He needs to be honoured in some way. He was one of the true greats in life.
Mac says in his autobiography (a great read, by the way) that Steve Marriott could be hard work because he was always hyperactive. The bit where he (Steve) has a heart attack was terrifying.
I met him at a 80's gig. My sister worked for the concert co and the biggest FM station. I have been backstage and met so many bands. Steve was so appreciative to meet you. It was like Oh Wow! He's so cool! Robin Trower was another so kind as well as Brian May. Clem Burke was so cool. gave me pointers and told me my set a Slingerland was a Jazz set but to still keep it because it will be worth its weight in gold..lol Yea should have listened and kept it. He was soo right .lol
Used to follow stevie around when he was pkaying in London. Spoke to him on many occasions and pkayed pool with him. Never met such a genuine performer. I never saw Stevie give less than a 100% performance. The greatest live performer I've seen. Ive seen many of the top bands but nobody tops him.
I was a sound tech at the Filmore when Humble Pie recorded Rockin' The Filmore. And yes, Steve was just a down to earth humble and polite man who anyone could get on with.
I met him in the 80's at a festival backstage. What a amazing person and so welcoming. It's like he already knew you when you met him. A real class act. I will say I was taken back how small he was. Maybe 5'3"? I got it small faces..lol The reason I thought we was taller maybe because his music was so big.. Such a loss..Rip Steve, Ronnie
Yes they were all short, hence the band name... I think it's Mac in his book (might be Kenney's) who says some teenyboppers who were mobbing them at the front of some hotel were overhead to say something like "I've gone off them now, look, they're so short!"
Stood beside him as he peformed his magic at the Deluxe Country Club in Santa Cruz California in 1979 while travelling in USA with my lovely girl Diana. Nobody comes close To Steve
Marriotts voice is exceptional. A very underrated guitar player too. Pure class. Could have been a stand up comedian too. Read the book ‘all too beautiful’ about him, its excellent reading.
The stones wanted him. Jagger didnt. Got Ron Wood instead. Not that there is anything wrong with Ronnie Wood. Listen to the mid riff and say you do not hear the faces.
Saw Steve many times in Detroit with various bands (H.Pie, Box of Three) and he gave nothing but 100%. One time ('81?) he hobbled out on stage with crutches because of a broken foot. Started off set sitting on a stool. By second song Steve had kicked stool over and was stomping across stage rocking as hard as possible on both feet. Truly a rock warrior! RIP Steve & Mac.
What a voice! Really did give it "All or Nothing," never sold out, did Steve, when others might have. The real deal. Ripped off, but still ROCKIN' !! Wish I coulda bought him a pint!
@@jacobmassey3897 Not so - The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, etc., did very well financially. Sadly, The Small Faces were managed by Sharon Osbourne's gangster father, Don Arden, who took all the money. Even Ozzy Osbourne was scared of him.
@@nigelwillmott6177 Don also ripped of ELO & most of the artists he represented. It taught us we need a law degree before we sign a contract unfortunately not everyone learned the lesson.
@@nigelwillmott6177 Pretty sure The Who made virtually no money until Tommy. That was the turning point for them. The Beatles and The Stones were outliers amongst 60s bands who made a fortune in the 60s.
Bad ass guitar playin' ta boot.country licks on All Or Nothing wow!! on a Fender Esquire. A REAL talent. THE best. Plant,Stewart and everyone else, just admit it, Steve was the MAN. period.
@@Ogma3bandcamp Otis of course but not sure the other two ever had the charisma that Marriott did. Terry never made it in the US as far as I know and Steve Winwood extremely talented for sure but Marriott had that special charisma that just doesnt come around often.
The fact that it took Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood to fill Steves shoes is testament to his talent, also he was showing frontman skills ahead of Plant, Freddie and Paul Rodgers and he could do Page, May and Kosoffe too.
Come on. The Faces is a whole different band. Stay With Me, Had a Real Good Time, Sweet Lady Mary, Love Lives Here and the Maybe I'm Amazed cover are totally DIFFERENT from anything Small Faces ever did
Who the fuck is the bass player is Jimmy McCulloch . Jim Levine is the best Bass player I've seen not even John Paul Jones comes close .Led Zeppelin aren't even close to The way Marriott makes the whole band fell involved .lLed Zeppelin took to much heroin especially Jimmy Page over rated if you ask me Classic cock rock
Did we ever see Rod Stewart play a guitar while performing like Steve? Bet there was a bit of jealousy there. RIP Steve, it was great fun watching you. Best Dave
I am just discovering these guys now, especially Steve Marriot - was this some clandestine CIA operation - how in the world could this guy have escaped my radar for so long - he is now one of my favorite artists of all time?
thanks for putting this great clip on youtube JimmyMcCullochFan---- great to see an unseen performance by Steve and his mates from 37 years ago. many many thanks. Steve was the greatest white soul singer I ever got to see, better than Stewart, Jagger, Daltrey, Plant, any and all of them. Always gave 120% every time I saw him. great to see newly uncovered recordings of the master and the greatest. THANK YOU.
+gregariousgreg johnson I competely agree with all your remarks - saves me from saying it myself and good know that someone has similar views to myself regards the amazing Steve Marriott and The Small Faces - cheers Plus huge thanks to Jimmy for sharing this timeless gem
I wish I could have seen him with either The Small Faces or Humble Pie. I already think he's the greatest ever watching these videos, live would kill me with joy. He was no slouch on the guitar either, and all those other singers you mentioned had to focus entirely on singing just to get anywhere close to Steve doing both guitar and singing, making it look so easy, and keyboard occasionally.
Toured with them in early '68 in NZ working for the promoter. The Who on the bill too. Stripy lil buggers!!! :-) Steve turned 21 in Wellington and threw his TV out the hotel window.
The essence of Steve Marriott's personality is captured in the opening exchanges with Whispering Bob. What would it have been like to spend an evening with him down the pub over a few pints - I can only dream on.........................................
+mick george Well, humour is clearly in the eye of the beholder, I guess. I don't see that as snide and Harris' face isn't shown again till the end when he is all smiles, so I'm not sure what you mean about "he wasn't happy". Unless that comment refers to Marriott who is clearly happy.
Best thing is they all laugh at the end that’s what you call a band they all loved the music loved the audience loved each other I always to this day thought other bands Who hated each other where in a way missing something very special but that’s just my opinion Who am I to speculate
Great jab from Marriott regarding not getting paid for his and the band's works . Hell, even Frampton "upstaged" Marriott during the Humble Pie era ...
***** it could not be the early eighties whispering Bob left the OGWT in '78. I'm almost sure I read somewhere that Ronnie could not make this performance because of ill health, although he may have been in America for all I know
Pogol Swood Ronnie wasn't involved in the late 70s version of the group (was at first, but not by the time they came to record/tour). This is the "Playmates" lineup with Rick Wills.
