We have lived in our custom cottage for a little over two years now - and often get asked how we are able to live in a small house with our large family. Today, I share seven reasons why we think small house living is great!
Keep in mind, while watching this video, that the word 'small' is a relative term. Some of you may live in even smaller houses than ours, with even larger families. I definitely know that our cottage is by no means a 'tiny house' - but it is smaller than the average American home, and our family is larger than average.
We had the blessing of being able to fully design a home for our family. It took years of thought and planning, but every decision was worth it in the end!
Now, living here, we can confidently say that our cottage has the perfect amount of square footage for our family. Among the things we love are a smaller mortgage payment, quicker cleaning time, and the sense of togetherness that we experience here.
If you are considering building or moving into a small house, I hope that you will factor these 7 benefits into your decision.
And, if you live in a small house currently and have another benefit that you would like to share - please leave a comment! Let's show these small houses some love!
xo

So looking forward to doing the same… I’ve been living for 21 years in a 2K sq ft home - by myself - and it’s ridiculous. I spend my ENTIRE weekends doing chores… spend far too much on utilities. It’s crazy. I’ve found a plan for a 900 sq ft home with lots of outdoor space (huge covered porches in front, side, and rear of home. I can’t wait to simplify my life. Your videos are terrific. Thank you! Your home is perfect ♥️

I am SO excited for you!!! My husband and I have often said that we could probably live in a tiny house, in a different season of life (kids grown)! There is something so personal about living in a home that is ‘just the right size’ - and connecting more with nature will be such a gift to you!

I have a smaller family of 3 (1 kiddo) and I like our smaller house because, yes, it's cheaper to pay the mortgage on and maintain as well as upgrade! Also each room has a purpose and anything not related to that purpose is removed.

I agree, I like our smaller house best. We downsized as a family of 7 about 5 years ago to a 1700 sq ft ‘70s fixer upper. We’ve made it our own and it has forced me to be a better gate keeper of stuff coming in and let go of things easier when that is needed. We’ve enjoyed most of the benefits you mentioned. I would change some things if I was designing it for our family (more windows), but it’s been great for us. We’ve become more outdoorsy moving here because we don’t have A/C so staying in on hot summer days isn’t that enjoyable. I feel like moving to this smaller house that is maybe not as nice as our previous one has opened the door for caring less about what people think and allowed us to make some other unconventional choices that work well for our life.

I would absolutely love a small house on a foundation with a little land around it. I like the idea of having a smart design that lives bigger than it is, something affordable that is not a burden to pay for or maintain, and a pitched roof. I plan to move from a noisy attached home to a vehicle to travel 1-2 years when I retire, and then would love to find a home in a calming natural setting. Don't need or want a lot.

We are a family of 6 and live in a 1440 sqft double wide. Our double wide was a 4 bedroom 2 bathroom with a family room and formal living room and we took the formal living room and turned it into another bedroom, we decided to turn our family room into our living room because it has a fireplace and you have to walk through it to get to 3 of the bedrooms and one of the bathrooms and our formal living room was right beside of the master bedroom so we were able to make it into a bedroom and leave a hallway to get to the master.

Yes , my home 🏡 is quite small also but I do miss extra storage cupboards this is one of the reasons why I am trying to become more minimal. I don’t have a linen closet so this is my next project to declutter linen & towels. And get a system where I can just keep what I need. Not sure how many towels or bed linen per person , being more minimal sure does make us more accountable for what we bring into our home. Great video by the way thanks 🙏 for sharing x

Hey, great video as always 👌 Can add two more reasons: - easier to find things when you haven't put them in their home in a hurry (of course, given the house is uncluttered :)) - easier to have kids onboard with housekeeping chores. It's not that daunting on them to complete their cleaning tasks Omg, I so enjoy my small apartment, where I get to live with my three kids 🥰

1300 Sq ft home family of soon to be 6. Honestly, I would be ok with something smaller or with a different layout. We have areas in the house we just don't use and it feels a bit wasteful. If this was our home to live in for many more years we would add a 2nd bathroom and 4th bedroom in this unused space. However, our goal is to just get debt free and sell the home to move south. So for now we are keeping it open concept space for the next buyers to do what they please. After living in this home I hope to buy or build our next home around 1000 Sq ft. All depending on our budget :)

Hi, your home is lovely. In the UK, your home would be compared to that of a decent family size. Big homes can be quite wasteful, for e.g. formal dining room that is only used on special occasions. 😊
@ArrowHillCottage
@ArrowHillCottage 2 года назад
Yes I have heard that from others in the UK. Our homes here in the US are bigger, and buyers will expect certain things. We designed our house for our family of 7, keeping in mind that if we ever do decide to sell it will be marketable

@@ArrowHillCottage Lol. For sure. That was hilarious tho. Once it got quiet and my son had fallen asleep standing by my bed with his head resting on my pillow. Lol. (We we’re in a 2 br apartment then-so yah). You can be within earshot also. The cats haven’t learned to write on walls at least but they have their own issues. 😅😅 And just less anxiety with making sure everyone is safe and not injuring themselves etc. Although they have to have just enough space to curb all the squabbling (they don’t all particularly like each other-hah cats) or I guess keep a check on keeping order and not letting play get out of hand etc. (Some cats like to play rougher than others do). And the latest ordeal is a strange influx of kittens. One the neighbor begged me to take. Another a renter brought in and two mysterious strays that just appeared. But then my old Queen may be close to the end also. She is very old. 16 plus years. With cats, if you get any younger ones coming round, here come the toddler days again. But eh. They are very cute. Hoping to find some good folks to adopt some. One is feral tho and prob can’t be adopted. The other street one is super defensive and cranky also. 😅😅 Well as they say kids are a handful. But I wonder what else I’d be doing tho. It’s better than being too self absorbed and getting depressed and bored I reckon. So potty training. Behavior training. And for mine outdoor safety training. 😅😅 Sigh. I mean people may knock me (how many do you have? I’m not saying. Ha ha) but as you can see I do not go running around actively looking for more cats. And so then I guess it’s time for another TNR snip snip project.

I live in a small 520 sq ft home (2 bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen/laundry room, a bathroom). Even as a single person there is not enough storage space for me. I'm considering buying an outdoor storage shed. Maybe I need to throw away things. I used to think I was a frugal minimalist but it turns out that I'm not. Why else do I feel like I don't have enough space for all the things I want...? I should throw away stuff instead of buying a storage shed. It is insane how I struggle with that decision.
@ArrowHillCottage
@ArrowHillCottage Год назад
Don’t be too hard on yourself! 520 sf is quite small indeed! Maybe take an inventory of some items that could possibly be on the ‘chopping block’ of elimination - not actually removing them quite yet but just writing them down. Then get a general idea about how much space would be freed up if those particular items were eliminated. If you find that you would still need a storage space regardless then I don’t think there’s anything wrong with either doing that or alternately searching for a larger place to live! ❤️
@SomeOne-yv8jf
@SomeOne-yv8jf Год назад
@@ArrowHillCottage Thanks for your reply! I will take an inventory of some things to throw away each month until I'm left with only the useful stuff. I was using the second bedroom as a storage room but I want to turn it into an empty exercise/stretch/yoga room. I will still need that outdoor storage shed to store the usefull stuff like my mower, garden tools, storage buckets, extra winter blankets, tent, folding camp chairs, cleaning products, etc. One thing I have realized about living in a small house is that a storage shed is necessary no matter how one tries to get around it. I don't think I will move because this small house is paid for in full and homes are expensive these days. I bought it thinking that it would be enough for one person, me. It is enough but somehow I want to live large in it and use every room. I don't want stuff to take over the place, I want to take over the place. Maybe I'm going insane alone in this house...
@ArrowHillCottage
@ArrowHillCottage Год назад
Yes, those types of things can’t be stored inside your home! A paid for house would definitely be an amazing thing - I don’t blame you for not wanting to move!
@vincentdesapio
@vincentdesapio 11 месяцев назад
For me, it is not necessarily about living in a smaller home. It is the fact that buying a larger home is typically a huge financial mistake. And most of the expenses are unanticipated to people who have no experience in living in a large home. The taxes and maintenance costs above all.

We are a family of 7 and our home is about 1400 sq ft. We decorate kind of using the concept that everything, in a way, is "decor". So functional items that you love the look of-the color, texture, style, stain of the wood, etc- will make your home feel stylish and decorated. It doesn't have to be expensive either, most things in my home are second hand. Paint makes a huge difference too in making spaces feel a certain way, and it is a great cheap way to pull things together.
