BTW if it's available within the area you are planning to build. use clay or very dense mud as a moarter between the logs. under the bottom logs of the cabin should have cobble stone or slate as a resting foundation. it should not be resting on the ground as moisture is one of the worst things for the longevity of timber. if possible you should not be resting on the ground yourself. if you can make an entire later of stone then mud and then a layer of logs as a platform to be living on. it is possible to get sick from laying on cold hard ground. I would myself consider this a very simple log cabin and not something I would use for an extended period of time.

if you support the bottom logs on rocks the cabin will last many more years cause worms and moisture want be there...

@xXxVespidaexXx
@xXxVespidaexXx 8 лет назад
+Casey Selix lumber is still expensive in certain quantities. one log of certain length and width can be a couple hundred dollars. quality comes into place too. why do you think tables tend to be very expensive? If you bring up cutting sown trees for wood then you would have to own the section of forest you get the trees from, which is also pricey. not to mention hiring people to help cut down the trees if you don't want to work alone. plus all the tools involved.

@jamescarmean2701
@jamescarmean2701 8 лет назад
+Joseph Farnham Insects live under the bark or will penetrate the bark as it decays. It will also preclude good chinking and water proofing. This will also rot more quickly since the logs are all touching the ground instead of making a rock foundation to get it up at least 18 inches.
@theconcretecowboy9561

the bark soaks moisture like a sponge, trapping mold and rot. thus creating a wonderful habitat for bugs, worms, etc

i found it easier to strip the bark off the logs after building the cabin.. also alot cleaner you dont get all the pine rosin all over you.. the stripping is so much easier after its all locked in, the parts of the logs that are touching was stripped with the chainsaw to level and make the fitting... Thistledome Outdoors I am First Nation native I know what I am talking it is our cultures that built North America hard work instead of smarter makes the cabin last long we still built cabins old ways but we learn to adept with modern tools as while...the elders would be telling you the same too..I always like seeing none-natives who say they know how to live off the grid but we still do since 1492 in Canada..we educate people on our cultures..because if you're gonna use our ways at least do it right...not faster and smarter but we know by saying smarter it's just an excuse for been lazy...this is why I tell people they wouldn't last a week in any northern Rez...none-Native call it off the grid but we call it culture....America may not acknowledge native cultures but in Canada they acknowledge our cultures and respect it...
