The hatch back didn't have to slam on their breaks but tailgating a plane that emergency landed is beyond stupid, they should have slowed down and given the plane some space.

That plane is coming to a very abrupt stop. The hatchback behind can't slam their brakes because the person behind him them will rear-end them. This means that the hatchback has to use up the safety distance between them and the aircraft to give the drivers behind a chance to react. That plane is touching down at ~65kts, which is 120kph. Then the aircraft is going to under 20kph in about 5 seconds. That's faster than most vehicles and drivers are used to stopping. The hatchback did the right thing. They even put on their hazard lights mid-stop.

PerfidiousLeaf the traffic behind the first hatchback was far enough behind that wasn’t a concern and by then everyone could see the plane. He wasn’t even braking. Just wanted to go on like normal lol.

If they all would have stopped, there would have been a tremendous accident behind. IMO they all did the right thing; adjusting their speed SLOWLY to suit the conditions and NOT stopping to gawk. In hindsight (as everyone likes to judge), the fact there was no accident means everyone involved did the right thing. Before anyone asks or comments, I am not from Canada. There is no need to be courteous when driving; that is what road rules are for. If everyone followed the rules, there would be no accidents.

@@pvtdipwad2944 Can confirm, we're instructed to taxi the aircraft out of the way as much as safely possible. Causing a traffic obstruction will lead to more accidents and even delay the ability for EMS and Support vehicles to arrive.

@@PerfidiousLeaf First of all, they weren't hazards lights, it was the left blinker because he wanted to pass an airplane. Second of all, I see an airplane on top of me trying to land and I brake. Cars were far behind so no excuses. Stop defending a crappy hatchback tailgating an airplane.

Those are the drivers in and around QC for you. Anyone who lives in Eastern Ontario has dealt with their ghastly driving culture on multiple occasions.

The type of people to go out of coronavirus joy rides would act like this...

Copy of my reply somewhere else; That plane has caused a sudden obstruction in the traffic. The highway speed is typically 110-120kph. Those vehicles need to get out of the way or the sudden stop will cause a cascade of accidents behind, especially for motorcycles and semi-trucks/heavy vehicles which will result in far more injuries and deaths. Those drivers had to come to a speed under ~20kph in about 5 seconds so all of them were using up their safe stopping distance gap to slow the braking down for everyone behind them. That's the purpose of the "Safe driving distance". The correct action is to pull off to the lane closes to the shoulder FAR BEHIND the plane (the plane can still roll if there's too much wind and/or the brakes are not set) and use your hazards to signal to incoming traffic to merge away. Then call 911. Then, if COMPLETELY SAFE TO DO SO and you are capable, go to the cabin window from the side that's facing the shoulder (do not walk EVEN NEAR incoming traffic if you value your life), WITHOUT climbing on the aircraft, and see if the pilot is responsive. If they are, visually confirm that they are not in need of IMMEDIATE emergency assistance. If they are fine, DO NOT ENTER THE AIRCRAFT, go back to your vehicle and either wait for EMS or wait for a good time to merge into the incoming traffic and leave. You going into or touching to the aircraft can and probably will result in far more injuries and or damage than if you just remained a bystander. Pilots are trained to handle these situations, leave it up to them. The only concern on your part is if the pilot is not in immediate danger that requires your intervention. EMS will handle the aircraft and everything else.

Some people are going on and on about how a lady stopped for ducks and now she's in prison for killing the two people on a motorcycle behind her. We're free to stop in the US if you see someone potentially in need and we're protected by law. I definitely would have asked if they needed anything (water, a/c, etc.). I'm a pilot myself and even though I know how to handle situations like this, I'd still appreciate someone stopping to check on me.

@@toolbaggers Probably not, if it was medical, they probably would have landed at an Aerodrome as EMS services can get their faster and the landing is safer. Unless the pilot didn't have any time at all but in that scenario he probably would have passed out/lost control before touchdown. That landing was smooth, the pilot didn't show signs of fatigue, weakness or waning consciousness with that landing. Maybe it is a medical emergency, I don't know. It just seems unlikely to me. We will have to wait for ATC recordings and the CTSB report.

PerfidiousLeaf you are correct, it was likely an engine failure, or some other mechanical malfunction.

​@@ah11980 I hold a Private Pilot's License and live in Canada, and I was correct, LiveATC's channel just released the recording. Loss of Engine Power leading to a forced landing on the highway, carburetor ice buildup seems to be the suspected cause as of now although we don't have the full CTSB report yet. I think you might need to look in the mirror Mr. Expert.
