We've always wanted to make our own olive oil. Not for sale but enough for our own use and to give as gifts to family and friends. And this year courtesy of a friend's milling equipment we had an opportunity to make our first batch of cold pressed extra virgin olive oil.

A good press should be built multi-purpose so you can press olive oil or grape or apple juice or honey from broken comb, and the only real challenge is getting it properly clean between different products. Instead of having a press that is used once a year for one product and collects dust the other 51 weeks of the year.

that is so interesting, I've been to a modern press and seen these old presses laying around in old barns, what a long process it was before... enjoy your midwinter celebrations and stay warm

noy bad for 8.8% extraction rate, the fact is that ripe olive produce more per kg than green or unripe ones, bc unripe ones have more water fraction at 75% but the black or overripe have less than 50% so they yield more per kg. and if you only select the rip and over ripe you can reach 20% yield mb the professional machines says they get to 15% with mixed half green half black. i think the reason why traditionnaly htye pick half green aand half black is bc green have more of the aromatic phenols and give that hot taste of fresh olive while overripe will taste like processed oil and thus people will doubt it's home made

Well done Jane, it got to be worth the effort for the end product and I definitely would go for the hydraulic version, it got to be worth the investment. Again well done and have a happy holiday of celebrations, look forward to your next video.

Thank you very much for your video, it really shows the volume which is so important for us viewers to understand. I too want to be able to press out own oil. Here in Australia it costs around $370 / ton to get your olives pressed, but there is no guarantee that you will only get your olives / oil in those smaller quantities. 100kg of oil from 1000kg of olives, it is still a lot of work to harvest, transport, etc... Interesting. Let us know if you have set up for this with a follow up video please!

You'd get a second press of oil if you mixed the dry mash with hot water ... not as good quality oil, but still useful for a lot of purposes where quality isn't as critical.

This is something we would do if we had our own press, our friend is very particular about quality and isn't really up for a second pressing. But yes, we think it's a good idea.

Fascinating video Jane - who knew olive oil had to “age” a month or so before one can use it? Have a wonderful holiday

Hi and thanks for your efforts.... I'm just curious about the potential uses of the "water" and any other biproducts?
@RuralSpanishRetirement
@RuralSpanishRetirement 8 месяцев назад
sadly the water appears to be somewhat toxic, or at least too strong to water plants directly ... they die. We dispose of it onto waste ground/grass and it doesn't seem to have an effect on the grass... it is only a small quantity though... I don't think it would be a good idea if there was a lot more of it.

Jane, do you take requests? Would you mind doing another video showing the end product? I'd be keen to see how it came out. Btw, a great video, as always. Enjoyed it all the way to the end. Happy Christmas and see you guys around. ;-)

It depends which country you are in. In Spain We can buy some of the equipment from our agricultural cooperative but If you search online you will find them.

Do you know the brand or model # of the milling machine you used? It would beat the food processor that I use now. Thanks

Sorry I don't but they're quite common. At the end of the film I'm looking at the catalogue and I think you can see the suppliers name and website. 👍 Good luck finding it.

@@RuralSpanishRetirement Thank You very much for the reply and in such a short time. I found the supplier and sent them an email to see if they ship abroad or know of an importer. Again thank you. And your right I use a small hydraulic press holds 4 liters of mash, so much easier than the screw press.

sorry to say, wrong style of matt and to much paste in those matts. Better to investigate how others do it and the equipment they use. Middle east communities would have been finished hours ago and eating some pita with the fresh squeezed oil by now!
