We have had tons of people asking us about EVE Audio’s new speakers, and today we have the opportunity to try them out! The EVE SC3070’s are ultra-compact 3-way monitors that are optimized for precise midrange and powerful bass response.
To test out these speakers, we chose a handful of songs that were recorded and mixed in our studios, so that way when they play back, we are used to them and know how they are supposed to sound.
After playing a few songs through these speakers, we are quite impressed with the way they sound! The high end has got that beautiful ribbon sweeter sound, and it is super smooth. And the low end is incredible, especially considering the size of the speakers. The EVE’s are a very modern speaker. What we mean by that is that compared to my Genelec 1032’s, they seem to have a bit more depth, and a bit more back to front.
These speakers sounded great and it was so much fun to get to try them out!

Devialet Phantom Reactors vs something else that goes down low, behind an acoustic screen so the test is blind. I don't think they sound like lifestyle speakers. They sound like very clear, full range, balanced speakers. See if you can get the custom installer version without the app.

I pulled the trigger and my SC3070s arrived today - I've had them up for less than 1 hour and all I can say is WOW..!!! The low end extension is utterly stunning (and this before adding treatment to my rearranged room). I'm listening to Beatles 1+ and hearing details I missed on a pair of DT1990's. Very early days, and Eve recommend 30-40 hours run in time in any case. These speakers are a joy to listen to. Thanks for the video Warren - very helpful.

Maybe it was just me, for sure the low end is massive but not in a good way to my ears. They are very muddy and boomy, for me they lack definition in low frequencies, Most probably in the room its different, but in the recording honestly and for the price....
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 3 года назад
Hi@@josearaujo8616 when did you get to use them? Or are you referring to the lapel mic picking up the speakers? Unfortunately that's not a very accurate representation. Did you watch the whole video? The EQ on the speakers can be adjusted to suit your needs, I was just remarking that they actually reproduce the lows!
@josearaujo8616
@josearaujo8616 3 года назад
@@Producelikeapro Thanks for the answer. I understand that not only your mic but my headphones will probably be more important for the quality of what I'm earing than the speakers so I would never judge a speaker from an youtube video sound, but I was referring to the comparison with the Focals and the Genelecs, so it could be the mic position that made them sound more muddy. I'm far from being an expert, but I understand that the size of the driver is of extreme importance in low frequencies, I also has a listener like clear defined low frequencies, I really don't like boomy muddy sound, so contrary to what most people do I tend to cut bass in small speakers, I don't like boosting and getting muddy sound, because that is what most active bluetooth/speaker brands. Anything bellow 55 on a 6 inch 50 on a 8 and even a 12 inch Morel sub will struggle bellow 50. Honestly for producing I would rather have single drive speakers and make the crossovers from the console, and even then have a high pass filter at 50 hz, I believe you could achive much better quality at a fraction of the cost of high end monitors. Single driver woofer and other for mid and you could even achieve much better speaker position than any speaker available.
@josearaujo8616
@josearaujo8616 3 года назад
@@Producelikeapro Regarding Equing.. well low frequencies response are steep on the low part, specialy in small drivers,yes you can adjust for all small steps in the frequencies, but the moment the sound level and volume change, you will have to do it all over again. There are also limitations on the mechanical part of the speaker who will easily bleed at low frequencies producing muddy boomy sound. I personally has a listener rather have a high pass at 50hz and improve the overall clarity and definition.. but to each his own. To counpound even more the problem, our ears frequency response is also very sensitive to sound levels at low frequencies, which makes you have to push more dbs in low frequencies for speakers who are not designed to do that to perceive a flat curve... Because I'm not a frequency range fanatic I just cut them and have the problem solved... saves me money also... the 4Khz dip, is my main problem, and the true acid test for speaker and driver quality IMHO..

Studio monitors are the last consideration of most musicians. Including me. That is SO wrong. I use KRK Rokit 5's because that was my budget. I've listened to EVERYTHING on these and I am beginning to 'know' their sound. However, they're never going to help me write a good song. That's my main focus. Thank you for a fantastic channel, Warren! \m/

A great pair of monitors will never help you write a good song. They will help you get a good balance of volume, eq and placement. Your Rokits' will inspire you to write, they have a nice (but 'false') sound, but get you into the groove :) I have the 8's and they are good fun to record and compose with. But for critical mixing, yea. Going to need to up the ante. I'm tempted to lash the cash on these EVEs'. Oh my god, there goes the bank balance :)

Ive had the SC3070s sat in my online basket (from a certain retailer) for over 4 weeks now, wanting to pull the trigger but hesitant because a) there were no proper reviews online and b) that certain retailer didn’t have a pair set up in the listening room and couldn’t arrange it due to Covid. Obviously your ears ain’t mine, but I think I have come to learn what you hear over the past couple of years, so tomorrow morning i going to bite the bullet and order them - obviously i get 30 days to trial - problem is, I’m in the middle of a complete studio refurb. But I don’t want to get stung waiting till after 31st December to buy these.... thanks for the very timely review. Ps can’t wait to play a certain track i recorded with Gerry Kitchingham at RG Jones back in the 90s through the EvEs to see if I can hear on them a specific sound that I swore I could hear through some JBL GS115s

Depth of the cabinet does affect the longer waves of the bass end. I observed this by changing a speaker cabinet. It will also be a good driver with maybe some electronic crossover tweaks and circuitry. Good to hear they can do the bass. I mixed on V8's for years, and when I listen back to my old mixes, they all seem dull because of that hyped upper mid range of the V8's. I switched to ADAM p33A's and started being able to mix for much longer sessions since they aren't nearly as fatiguing. Those are not ribbon tweeters. Those are air motion transformers or AMT. The woofer and midrange look like Eton drivers and the AMT looks like it could be from Dayton. I built my own studio monitors with Seas titanium dome tweeters, Scan Speak fibreglass midrange drivers and two 8" Dayton drivers per side. They are flat, in room, down to 27 hz. It really surprised me how flat they actually were, since most of the time you will have a few dips and peaks. These are flat within 2 db across the whole spectrum. Distortion levels are well below 1% from 20k down to 31 hz at 95 db. Maybe I should start selling them, lol!

You should def. compare them to the new HEDD MK2 TYPE 20, It´s the same look, similar tech, but different brand. Side by side comparison would be beautiful!

Hey warren! Are you scared of what the Germans are building again on speakers I have the Adams s2v and it's really a big lowend weapon with a 7 "woofer and super softly defined heights! I had genelec 8040 with 2x sub 7350 before but they are just aggressive in sound against eve and Adam. The ribbon twitter made it out of such fine detail resolution .. And the low-end just massive punch! Small but nice! 😉 The inventor of Eve was once at Adam audio! 😉 I've been curious about the part since I saw the new eve 3070. Unfortunately it was not available for a year, so I decided on the Adam s2v. And I do not regret simply sensational monitor! 🥰 But the eve could still come as a 2 monitor pair in the studio. Have fun listening to track! 🙏🕺🥳

If you really want know what your mix sounds like. Mixdown with headphones. Lows and highs can fool you because of cabinet size. Honestly, it all boils down to each person's perspective. I found my level of bass happens to be too much for others lol. Controls asside, they are fantastic, but not to the tune of 2K! My preference is a vintage pair of Kenwood KL-777'S

I think the topic is discussed since Tannoy came with a "sweeter" Version ob the ALTEC 604 principle... Since then engineers are discussing whether nice sounding comfortable HiFI-Monitors are really better for music production. Until now, some engineers swear on Auratones, Yamaha NS-10, KRK and Altec/Urei, while others prefer Quested or Genelecs or Ribbon HiFi. I personally was never glad mit the NS-10, but with Auratones as small monitors for Mixing. Since some years i use Quested mid size monitors and smaller EMES coaxial speakers that are pretty neutral in the midrange without phase shift. As big speakers i user either a 4-way ATM system, or a turbosound 3-way PA.

Owned Eve's for 5 years. Here's the good and bad. They sound fantastic, really, the ribbons are just so satisfying and detailed, so far from normal tweeters that you won't want to go back... BUTTT (!) I don't know if I'd mix on them professionally, and definitely not alone. They don't sound like other speakers which is the good and bad part. I don't find myself getting fatigued at all - so it is GREAT for long listening, recording and creative sessions... so sweet! But for mastering, I'd want/need a second pair of less beautiful and more scientific monitors (original Mackies or Genelecs, etc).

At 10:57 you seem to have some smaller 2-way monitors, to the right of the Genelec monitor. These might fit in the budget a little better. Though I'm a little concerned if the low end is sufficient enough? And do these need some sort of a special power cable? That might be a deal-breaker as it might be hard to find spare ones if I ever break one.

I just tried something with results that surprised me quite a bit. I hooked up an old pair of Fostex 6301B personal monitors that have been sitting around unused. I wanted to have a different perspective and they are now my 2nd pair of monitors. My main monitors are M-Audio BX8s, so even though I have spent a lot of money on gear it hasn't been on monitors. I know the sound of the M-Audios, but a nice pair of Genelics would be a good investment. I have mostly mixed with headphones over the years, but that brings a lot of ear fatigue and occasionally makes me have to wait a few days for my ears to clear up if I make aggressive compression mistakes. I already have decades of excessively loud rehearsals and gigs from the past working against me, so who knows what I am missing out on, but when I get the mix right, it is often from how the mix makes me feel as well as just listening to sound. The Fostex monitors are dirt cheap used and they obviously don't compare to the monitors in this video, but those little self powered speakers have a great low end and good presentation of what the music will sound like on car or other systems and it's really helped me to tweak some mixes and my own mastering to better results. What I hear on them is quite close to what it sounds like in my truck. It beats cutting the wall and bringing the truck inside. I can tell you that.

@@AnAmericanGuitarist Monitors that you know well are always valuable even if they aren't the top of the line
@AnAmericanGuitarist
@AnAmericanGuitarist 3 года назад
@@efnerva664 Agreed. Once you know how what you hear from the monitors translates on other systems you are well on your way to a good mix. Once you develop the skills, you can still get the job done. I usually burn a CD and bring to different vehicles and I achieve consistency, but then focus on what specifically is in the way of what I want to have featured a bit more in a mix and adjust from there. Better monitors are of course "better" and would cut a few test CDs out of the procedure.

Thanks for the video. :) Sorry I haven't been engaging in the academy recently. Lots of audio stuff on the go (and a bit of S.A.D. too, which is probably not helping). Oh, and yo to answer the last question before you finished the video: I currently use Neumann KH 120 As as my main monitor and my old Event TR-8s as backup. Really impressed with the accuracy on the Neumanns. They're like glasses, but for ears!

Unfortunately I am not able to hear them yet because the person is not located in the same town with and I'm kinda relying on reviews and opinions.
