Small World Woodturning - Video
It really is a small world. This piece of cedar I'm turning on the lathe came from a different country, and YOU WON'T BELIEVE how I got it.

Gorgeous cedar piece. Great idea to soak the tenon with ca glue. I primarily use recycled woods, wood from the side of the road or like you said tree trimmers gladly let you take what you want. Many will also just dump it at your property. Bermuda Cedar is very much mike Virginia Cedar. From south east Virginia along the coast to middle Florida Across to the coast of Texas. Louisiana has a good bit that often can be retrieved from the various water sources they were lost in during transport. I have several logs around. Thank you for sharing. Everyone stay safe, happy 😊 and healthy. From Henrico County Virginia

I love turning new and to me different woods. I sell some at a local Kansas Made shop. A fellow from south Texas called me 6-8 months ago and wondered if I could turn things from ebony. He was just traveling through. Surprising to me ebony does grow in South Texas. This tree was special to his family and it has really been a fun learning experience for me. 30 or so pieces so far.

Pretty little bowl! Virginia cedar (aka eastern red cedar) is Juniperus virginiana. Bermuda cedar (Juniperus bermudiana} is in the same genus, but different species. So they should close to the same when turned. We have Ashe Juniper here (Juniperus ashei) and I turn a lot of it. It is a nice tight grain as well, but can be a bit brittle. However, it is difficult to find round pieces like yours. The trunk is especially craggy with tons of bark inclusions. But it still finishes beautifully.

Another option is to not apply any liquid finish to the bowl. A finish is not a necessity. I made a beautiful little Eastern Red Cedar bowl earlier this year. Yes, as all wood will do, it will turn brown with age. But applying a finish is not a necessity. My bowl looks great with no finish at all! The wood isn't going to suddenly self destruct without a finish on it. :D
@TurnAWoodBowl
@TurnAWoodBowl 8 месяцев назад
Nick, that's true, but you'll also want to keep it out of the sun as UV will make it darker too. I gave my son a black cherry bowl that was a beautiful rich red and it's now a chocolate brown. Still a great bowl, but much darker. Happy Turning!

Very nice wood! The coloration has a hint of juniper to my eyes. Did you get any hassle at US Customs bringing this into your country? When I was in Zambia, I acquired a piece of native wood that the nationals called Mooqua wood (it's dark like walnut). I live in Canada and, although Canadian Customs looked at it long and hard, they did let me keep it. That was in 1986 and, because it comes with a lot of memories of my stay in Africa, I don't seem to have the heart to cut this 3 x 5 x 12" beauty. Maybe one day... who knows? @@TurnAWoodBowl No, I got the basics. No problem cutting uninterrupted wood. I'm talking about cutting when you have air gaps. They make the chisel bounce around and skip when you briefly lose bevel support.

Hi Ken! Beautiful piece and fun story! I've got a question and a story regarding one of your other videos. 1) Do you have any insight or experience in turning in a non-climate-controlled shop? I live in Wisconsin...winter is coming...and my woodshop (a roughly 120yr old dairy barn) is entirely uncontrolled - no humidity control, no heat, no AC. If I get a wild hair and turn some bowls when it's below freezing (I assure you I will)...then take said bowls inside...is it basically a death sentence of cracking even if the wood is several years old and acclimated to the ambient outdoor humidity? My last shop was in my basement where I had no such issues year around but I moved last year and no longer have an accommodating basement for wood-turning. 2) I watched your video on the subject of gouges where you explained why it is not safe to turn a bowl with a spindle gouge. Well...here's my story...my lathe (a jet 9"), a Nova G3 chuck, and a 1/2" bowl gouge were all comprised in a Christmas gift from my brother for Christmas 2012...his stated hope was for me to get into turning bowls - I used to be a machinist and he comically thought I'd pick right up on woodturning... because lathes😂 My brother never did any lathe work but we shared in many other avenues of woodworking for several years prior. He was tragically lost to a motorcycle accident in May 2014 and up to that point, I hardly spent any time on the lathe because of college and later graduate school - I did a couple spindle turnings while he was around but never attempted a bowl...I got enough heart attacks from the spindle turning catches that I was pretty hesitant to even try. Well after grad school was done, I had some time for hobbies again but with the loss of my brother still fresh, stepping into the woodworking shop we had outfitted at my parents house was damn near impossible...turning on that lathe was vastly harder...but eventually I wanted to honor my brother's wish to get into bowl turning so I finally got around to it in 2016, got some (innumerable) horrendous catches, got unbelievably furious that I wasn't figuring it out...found some RU-vid videos on catches and finally...painfully... learned how to turn bowls without any concern about catches. Back then I couldn't afford the wolverine system for sharpening my gouge so I made one from plywood and used my other hobby of blacksmithing to forge an adjustable bracket system to use the plywood contraption with a vintage hand crank grinder and a brand new fine stone - I then reprofiled the gouge to a swept back grind (I don't remember the angle and I can't check as I'm out of town) but that was a game changer on my enjoyment of using the bowl gouge! From there, I've enjoyed years of fantastic success and joy from turning bowls, pens, and candle holders for friends and family that I'm quite proud of as recently as a couple weeks ago... through it all, I've never felt the need to go out and buy another gouge - I've bought a parting tool, a skew, and a sander and really feel like that's all I need...so here's the punch line of this story...that "bowl" gouge my brother bought me...is NOT...a BOWL gouge but a 1/2" spindle gouge. My brother didn't know the difference when he bought it...I assumed it was a bowl gouge because he told me it was...and I never knew there was a spindle gouge (except for the giant spindle roughing gouges I've seen)... all until about a week ago when I saw your video and looked at the label on the back of the sleeve for the gouge that reads "Spindle Gouge, 1/2" 🤣🤣🤣 so now I'm wondering if I need to go out and drop $150 on a bowl gouge 🤔 Oh and by the way...even though I can comfortably afford the wolverine system today...I still use my plywood contraption and hand crank grinder 😂

Timberanvil, Thank you for writing and sharing! 1) It will depend on the wood species and moisture content. You should have some harder species that will do just fine with that cold to house adjustment. You can also put the bowl in the house in a cool area first for a day or two before subjecting it to the full house heat. We go iver much more about this on my Tree to Bowl Understanding Green wood course. www.TurnAWoodBowl.com/green 2) So sorry to hear about your brother. I've got two brothers and I greatly appreciate them in my life. I can't imagine the loss. As for the spindle gouge, if you're fine using it, I'd stick with it. Now, here's the punch line about these two tools. Prior to the creation of the bowl gouge around the 1980's, people only had the spindle gouge to make bowls. We talk about that history more in my Bowl Gouge Mastery course www.TurnAWoodBowl.com/mastery. That being said, the bowl gouge is much beefier and will allow you to rough much more aggressively and safer. All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent

@@TurnAWoodBowl Thank you for the thorough reply - friends come and go throughout life but your brother is always your brother - almost 10 years gone and it still isn't easy. As for being able to rough more aggressively with a proper bowl gouge - well, that'll have to wait until I get a bigger lathe - I can all-too-easily bog down the motor on this little lathe with the spindle gouge LOL Cheers! nice wood!! i have a question about hollowing the bowl. why not take the center out first , so you have you,re dept right away and it prevents catches , and its easier to start hollowing. this is what richard raffan said when i asked him. what is the bennefet of this method?
@TurnAWoodBowl
@TurnAWoodBowl 8 месяцев назад
Niel, I like working from the wall down to the center because I have much more control of the wall thickness and thinner walled bowls benefit from the support of the center mass as I proceed down the interior. It's a preference thing, either way can work. Live and nature edge bowls are the main reason I started using this technique. Happy Turning!

This blank can be used to make a beautiful and useful end grain box rather than a clunky piece of wood. It seems to me that not every piece needs to be made into a bowl.
