@@jacoba6747 I disagree, Clark and Lex imo represent two kings. Clark being the godlike being he is in terms of raw power and his representation of justice, hope, love and all that is good. While Lex represents power in terms of money political power,/corporate power as well as being a representation of greed, hate, jealousy, and evil.
The episode where Lex Luthor is truly born into the monster he was meant to be, and the scene where Clark finally realises his best friend is gone forever, defining moment in the series plus that amazing piano song playing, unforgettable scene
I agree with you Lex has truly embrace his darker side when killed Lionel and the moment we see Lex and Clark facing each other Clark see there's no good left in Lex after him committing the act of patricide murder of one's own father I seen how Lionel turned over a good leaf there was a little hope for Lex but after killing Lionel that hope was gone for good
Ehm, Yes. They do hate each other. Actually they hate each other the most. Lex hates him the most because he has the life he never had and everything he wanted is Clark's. Clark in Season 6 when he was under Red Kryptonite said to Lana "Why not choose the person I hate the most" according to her wedding with Lex. So yeah. It's a true hate between those two. Crystalic hate I would even say.
I love how Whitney's Dad and Jonathan were buried in such a beautiful cemetery with Angels and the feeling of God looking over their son's shoulders but Lionel is buried in this bleek, emotionless cemetery...the stare that Lex and Clark give each other like, soon, it's on, but not today, and the bit of a smile from Lex, almost feeling sympathy or respect for Clark...and then Clark pouring the dirt as a final respect and the sun shining on Lionel's cold grave..... beautifully done.
I never took that smirk as a smile of respect or empathy, it was more like he enjoyed seeing Clark frustrated that he was unable to save Lionel and he was just rubbing it in. Lex enjoys the control he has over Clark here
i like how clark was the one to drop the dirt on the coffin instead of lex, it shows how much clark valued lional as a father figure and how lex didnt value him at all
True and tragic my beloved dad himself died 5 years back this November 08th this year like Clark Kent dad Jonathan Kent accidentally killed himself with his heart attack and sadly Lionel Luthor was murdered by his stupid evil son Lex Luthor how coincidental that is it’s true and tragic and unnecessary and unacceptable whenever we all think whatever happens to us and family members who knows we can’t predict the future years itself of what is coming so we all can do is go daily life week to week months at a time whenever the future new year comes thanks buddy peace and love to you buddy
1:32 That cynical smile at the corner of Lex's mouth says a lot about his attitude. How his views have become so askewed. He has no soul left to burn. And you can see in Clark's eyes how he tries to recognize the friend - the brother - he used to have in this man standing on the opposite end of the grave, but can't.
They said it all without words. The show has been over for so long that no one ever talks about how amazing actors Michael and Tom were. Their chemistry as friends was one of the highlights of the early seasons. But as enemies, it was next level.
Lionel Luthor was like a third father for Clark. Even though he did some questionable things, towards the end he had nothing but love for Clark and he felt what a great man Clark will go on to become. I felt sadder at this funeral scene than that of Jonathan
worked on smallville for 7 years and directed this show...tom and Michael were very into the episode and this scene ...they are great guys and rally underestimated actors.
I just want to say that "Smallville" was a great show with a great cast of actors and production. I can't wait to get the complete series on BluRay on Oct, 19th 2021. Again, thank you.
Watching this show, i really wanted them to be friends. I held out hope, knowing full well where their destinies would lead them. This is when hope was lost. Lex couldn't come back from this. What could have been.
This is when Lex truly lost his soul. He murdered his father, turned his back on everyone & vowed to destroy Cal El. All that & Clarke was still hoping his friend Lex was still in there somewhere, but deep down, he knew Lex was lost to everyone
This was better than any FIGHT scene on the show. Add to the fact that it symbolized them both finally putting to bed their friendship once and for all and realizing they are enemies and this could be one of the most epic scenes up to this point in the series period!
@noahbriggs8347 Not quite. Remember, in this episode, Lex destroyed the good part (Alexander) of him in the fireplace of his mansion because he made him weak according to Lex.
That glance they give each other tells a lot. There's no going back. Lex has crossed a line that is beyond redemption...and at the same time killed any chance of these two reconciling and mending their fractured friendship. The lack of dialogue works in that there are no words left to say. Clark is in effect mourning two deaths: Lionel's, and that of the good man that Lex once was. All that's left is hate and a hunger for power.
Man... if only BvS had had this Lex Luthor instead of "Crazee Eisemberg"... you need to have chemistry even between enemies and that`s what made Clark´s and Lex rivalry in smallville so amazing!!
NC Quadraxis A. BvS Lex is more like Birthright Lex if only more eccentric and playing up the evil factor B. New 52 Lex has a more benevolent sides of sort, similar to SV Lex nut still has stereotypical evil moments especially under Geoff Johns
True. This scene was good signoff to the everlasting on-off friendship between Lex and Clark. Also, the scene where Lex murdered his good side by throwing his younger version into the fire was a good stepping stone to this scene.
"Total absence of love. Some say that's the definition of evil." I liked the Lex in first seasons ! So sad to see how he became the true villain of the superman's story...
I love how there were no words between Clark and Lex, yet I could tell what they thought and felt from their looks. This is how amazing this show was and always will be.
You can really feel Clark's shock and pain to realise that such evil exists. Especially in someone that was once his close friend. It's sad to see them as enemies, but at the same time it has to be this way.
Clark: "How could a son murder his father?" Clark is quick to forget how much a horrible human being Lionel was before Season 4. He's the reason why Lex is evil for goodness sakes.
mthakore he is a big part for sure i think they should have written it as the Lionel luthor from season 10 was the Lionel from seasons 1 to 4 and somehow the Lionel from 5 to 7 could have been from a different earth!
I've always liked the Clark/Lex on this show. How they were best friends but how they kept each other at a safe distance. Knowing how each other was lieing to each other. I bet they had a really good friendship behind the camera.
That pretty much sums up the dynamic of the show. You know going in to season 1 the history of the man of steel and his arch enemy, so the show having them be friends in the beginning is incredibly peotic. Seeing how they both want to be each other's friends but clark is told not to trust the Luthors and lex, knowing that clark is hiding something, becoming obsessed with trying to figure out how they survived the incident that should've killed them both resulting in their eventual meeting. It's incredibly saddening because you see them get along so well and you hope, against the eventual fate that the story takes them, they remain friends forever.
The actors of the serie are so nice I love michael rosenbaum as lex luthor. He play the guys u perfect. Tom welling as xlark kent. I never saw a better serie. Normally i hate superman but this serie is so full of emotions, action and so on and so much mire positice things at once. Just perfect. I havnt say much than this
Still the best scene on Smallville friends turned bitter enemies truly sad and truly one of the best staredowns ever and that smirk on Lex's face priceless
This would have been the best way for Smallville to end I think personally it was truly sad and you said it best friends turned bitter enemies truly sad
Lex once told Clark this about their fathers funerals: Lex: "Clark when my father dies, Kings will show up to his funeral. But at your father's funeral, his friends will show." Lex was right, only he and Clark showed up to Lionel's funeral, both Kings in their own right.
I was watching the video and listening to the music while reading this and i have to say that was the most epic fucking comment I've ever read on youtube.
@@user-ur7zi9zr5m I just meant in the moment during the funeral. Maybe Lex figured Clark would come or was a bit surprised by it. But I found it interesting that he didn't yell at him or just simply tell him to leave, he just let there be silence between them and for Clark to just be there.
How long ago was this.. almost 15 years ago?? This scene EVEN TODAY makes me emotional! Watched the complete series back to back a few weeks ago... LOVED it then.. LOVE it NOW!!
Seasons 1 through 7 were amazing, While there were some stand out episodes in later seasons none of them had the impact that the show had with Lex in. Rosembaum is one of the most under rated actors going & deserves way more recognition for this role in particular
It's scenes like this that made Smallville such a special show and even though there were no actual words exchanged here, it really spoke so much volumes and the sombre piano music being played at the end made it even more powerful.
No words can describe the symbolism of this scene. This is, for me, the best scene in Smallville’s history, the music, the characters carrying all of their past but also the burden of the future inevitable fight between them with just THAT look, absolutely amazing and so emotional. Plus, this episode was legendary, and one of the best episode in the show, along with the 100th and the 200th episode. But in this episode, you have that amazing opening scene between Lex and Lionel and Lex definitely turning evil, you have this AMAZING scene between Clark and Lex in the manor, and of course this ending. Just wonderful and that’s why we loved this show.
One of the tragic, but most compelling themes, of Smallville, was Lex's slow transformation from a spoiled but well meaning person to an evil villain. I remember watching the show when it aired here, in the UK, on channel4, in the early 2000s. Michael Rosenbuam portrayed Lex as a very relatable and likeable character who, despite his inherent "Luthor" flaws, actually cared about his friends, especially Clark. Smallville's strength, especially the early seasons, was that it was more character driven, rather than relying on the fact that the main protagonist was a super human alien.
Clark has buried all three of his father figures. First his adoptive father Jonathan Kent, then the father figure he found in Lionel Luther, and finally his own father Jor'El.
I remember seeing Tv spots n teasers for this series in the weeks leading up to the premier. And 13 year old me, back in 2001, thought it looked gimmicky and/or cheesy. Ended up watching the whole thing as they aired. Smallville very much proved me wrong. N now, all these years later as an adult, my appreciation for it has done nothing but grow. Thank you Tom and Michael for giving us all the best version and rendition of the story of Superman, ever told.
The reason of why Lex is like are more complex that Clark secret, Lex in a way always was in the near the abyss, he still have conscience, but that was shattered by mistrust, arrogance and an obsession for control everybody. That circumstances make Lex fall to the abyss and finally take the final step that is killing his father, the first step was when Helen Bryce making fall to that desert Island, then all go to hell after that.
Lionel was so instrumental to the monster that Lex became that ut doesn't matter what he tried to undo after the essence/body swap with Clark. The damage was already done. If that change came yrs before, maybe Lex would have had a chance to change his path.
Yeah, I always hated the way that this was Lex's tipping point. Lionel was abusive to Lex and treated him like garbage, but just because he is nice to Clark, Lex has now crossed the line to kill him despite years of the show from its inception showing how Lionel shaped the evil in Lex. This was ridiculous.
I think it should also be noted that when Lex was presumed dead in the earlier season, Lionel was going to have a massive funeral in the mansion burial grounds (if I recall). Lex gave Lionel not even a standing tombstone. Just a grave marker in a crowded cemetery, which Lionel would have definitely seen as an insult.
