Man we lose one of the best characters in a show I've seen for awhile. I hate the way they did him because Lionel is an anti-hero that will never be forgotten. Patreon: LostGamerReactions
We need a HUGE round of applause for John Glover and Michael Rosenbaum for that ICONIC scene. This episode marked the first time where Lex genuinely scared me.
This was one of the darkest episodes of Smallville for obvious reasons. "Descent" is the perfect title for this episode. 1. Lex's descent into madness. Because at this point in his life, Lex was completely consumed by his quest to uncover the mystery that is Clark Kent so much so that he was willing to murder his own father just to confirm his suspicion that Clark is the traveler. 2. It can be argued that Lex's journey to villainy has now been completed, so a descent into darkness so to speak. It reminds me of that conversation Lex had with Ryan back in season 2: "You see Ryan, in life the road to darkness is a journey, not a light switch."
Right there with you. I'm a big Lionel fan. This bummed me out. As sad as parts of this was it's still in my top 10 for the whole series. If you spend any time watching interviews you'll hear most of the young cast say John Glover really helped teach them what it was to be a professional actor.
Amazing reaction man. I adore this episode, the dialogue, the staredowns and the acting are so on point. Lex finally killed his better side, nothing will hold him back now. The 'funeral' is my favorite part of the entire episode, I felt like Clark was there to forgive Lionel for what he did and swore to make him proud. When Lex looks at him and gives that very subtle smirk, I interpreted that as Lex being quite happy that Clark was in pain, that to him aside from gaining the key from Lionel's death, he got the satisfaction of also seeing Clark hurt.
That last shot with the little flash of sunshine 👏👏👏 It’s nice metaphor at the end of a very dark episode. It’s a new dawn, the dawn of the classic Superman vs Lex Luthor era.
Some of the acting in this episode is ridiculously good. RIP Lionel, one of the great characters portrayed by one of the truly great actors! Also Michael is my favourite Lex Luthor, he owns this role.
You're reactions on the 7th season storyline are awesome. The Vertias story was something the show had been building up for years. Level 3, 33.1 Vertias. All the dots (Well almost all of them) were connected in the 7th season by this point. There was so much foreshadowing that you missed out on too because so much of it was detailed in Online content that was released when the show first aired, and on the DVD box sets.
The lex luthor in this show is one of the greatest character developments of all time. He went from an awesome brother type of friend, to a psycho killing literally everyone
Name me another show that takes someone, makes you hate them. Has you root for them, than hate them harder then ever when they are responsible for killing the main characters dad, then redeem them and make you cry for them when they die
I feel in the earlier seasons Lex had chances to change but even Clark gave up on giving him so many chances. His younger self was his last chance of redemption but by this episode Lex was full on villian. Point of no return
For some reason, Lionel's death wasn't really emotional. It got me more in the feels when Ryan died back in season 2 than this. This was more like a jaw-dropping thing than a crying thing.
