This DIY charging station was built out of a necessity to find a spot for the three tablets constantly roaming our house from my wife and I’s three small roommates. I wanted it to be a fun woodworking project but mix in some cool technology. Enter the LEDs and arduino project. It was my first time working with arduino projects and current sensors and I didn’t get it exactly right. But I learned a few new things about electronics projects and this DIY charging table is going to be just what our family needs to organize the cell phones and tablets.

9:02 The Arduino Due has a scheduler library available, that allows you to create threads running independently from each other, so you can update more strips at a time without messing with timings and other complex things. You can make as many loop functions as you need. It even has a lot more pins and it's a lot faster
@Fixthisbuildthat

Oh, man! That sounds perfect. Apparently I didn't do enough research..ugh
@GyroGearlooseHelis
@GyroGearlooseHelis 4 года назад
Due and scheduler are INSANE for this. Leave all the LEDs one strip, paint into a buffer (like a screen) and shift it out atomically. Tiny fast code. This is embedded mPU, not Microsoft bloatware.

These types of how to builds don't make any sense. Here I am doing this cool DIY project but oh wait I have 100k worth of tools, and a setup that is crazy... (I'm not hating for real) I'm just saying if your how to was done with what normal dudes have at their house it would be very helpful. Now I can see what you can do with a basically a commercial shop, and that is cool, inspiring, and definitely good job.. but now I can't make the charging station because I don't have much of that gear :). That said feel free to reach out and I can help you with the code for your arduino charing stuff because well... haha I don't have 100k worth of wood working tools there, but I do have a 100k+ data center in my basement. To each nerd his own :) Once I get your arduino code sorted maybe we can form voltron and you send me my precut pieces and I'll send you the code and arduinos and sensors to do any project.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing this. Post a link to your current version of the Arduino code so folks can suggest some changes. My experience with things like this that exhibit erratic behavior is that the voltage sensor input needs to be "de-bounced;" meaning that there are very small variations in the sensor readings that should be ignored unless they last for a prolonged period of time (say, 100 milliseconds or so). Much fun. Thanx again....

Someone commented about a scheduler library, I didn't know that existed. I would have probably tried some interrupts and/or shape the code into a structure known as a finite state machine. And if that is not enough, brute force it with a faster Arduino, like the teensy 3.6 that thing clocks at 180MHz! Or if you get your hands on one, a teensy 4.0 that can go 800MHz! You have options my friend!

I freaking love this. I wanted to make a thin table to go behind the couch against the wall then run a wireless charging dock underneath it. The LED idea though, ohhhhhh that is mint I like

Thanks for the honesty about the electronics not working like you intended. I think you made a really nice piece from some scraps!

Pro tip: don't get your kids ipads. Make them work for their electronics. They will value it more, and you keep them safe for a little while longer from beinf f'ed up by the internet.

If your wood doesn't match you can always use a checkerboard style like the cutting board everyone made in middle school woodshop.

Don't take this too seriously, I made a lame lump of wood lamp in middle school.
