This isn't a band. It's just Billy Corgan going into a studio and recording 100 guitar tracks per song, then whispering half his vocals before eating a bunch of broken glass and recording the other half. You're not Kevin Shields, man. Chill. The Smashing Pumpkins suck.

The only record that ever moved me in the way The Pumpkins were seemingly 'supposed to', based on the press etc they got, was "Siamese Dream". A tight, just diverse enough record that integrates Corgan's dream-pop and shoegaze fascinations with his interest in mini 'guitar symphonies' as well as his teenage obsession with heavy metal, all into something really special. Even the record immediately following, the bloat had already set in (to me)

I used to be in a band with a dude who said "never do in the studio what you can't replicate on stage." It's some of the best advice I've ever heard as a musician. Mind you, I saw Dream Theater at an open air festival a few years back and they were fucking note-perfect, so I don't know what William And The Pumpkins' excuse is.

@HULK HOGAN Easy, dude, it was just an opinion. It depends what each band personally wants from their sound, but I think he made perfect sense. It saves disappointing people when they hear a fantastic album and then discover that the band can't pull it off live.
@Darthflips
@Darthflips 3 года назад
No way. Recording is an art form into itself. What's great is when great songwriting, musicianship, production and mixing all come together. That's what makes timeless records. Always do in the studio what you can't do onstage then figure that sh out. Recording makes mediocre musicians professional. Totally different mindset and approach. You friend was a ding dong.
@Dani_Ptitsa
@Dani_Ptitsa 3 года назад
@@Darthflips Believe me, I've been in bands for a long time and sometimes you just can't replicate live what you do in the studio. Perhaps it just depends on what you want from your live sound, or perhaps Smashing Pumpkins are just a poor live act! I do agree with you that recording can make mediocre musicians professional, though - producers are true magicians and often deserve more credit than the musicians themselves!
@mikeeb6308
@mikeeb6308 3 года назад
Not bad advice but studio recordings can be an art form in and of itself. Also bands that improvise live often create a more exciting experience that those that go note for note. So different bands can be great for different reasons. Oh by the way if your favorite band is Dream Theatre .....you know the rest.

@mywhychromosome
@mywhychromosome 2 года назад
@@TheVioletBunny James Iha, at least (and I suspect D'Arcy as well, although im not sure) was still writing his own parts a lot of the time, at least on the first few records, but Billy being the obsessive person he was, would then record their parts himself in the studio, which is part of what started really rubbing them the wrong way. If he had been BOTH writing AND recording their parts from the very beginning (like a Nine Inch Nails situation), I don't think it would've started fucking with their heads the way it did. To give Corgan a LITTLE leeway, I will say that being able to record parts robotically and accurately time and time again (esp before digital punch-ins became super easy) is a totally different skill that a lot of people don't have. There's nothing like getting past the halfway point of a song before your finger slides slightly past the mid-point of the fret and the note doesn't come out perfect, and you have to start over. Makes you wanna blow ur brains out, lol
@guyincognito320
@guyincognito320 Год назад
@@mywhychromosome Of course Billy and Jimmie laid down all the tracks... they were the ones with talent to make hits. The funny part though is like with 1979 it's a real drum kit but it's just two bars looped, so you neutralize Jimmie with that approach.. but then Billy also played that loop himself. So in that case Jimmie wasn't gonna cut it for Billy's genius vision for how that song was supposed to be.
@mywhychromosome
@mywhychromosome Год назад
@@guyincognito320 That’s really interesting about “1979”, I never knew that…I mean, I knew it had the SOUND of a late-‘80s drum loop, but I figured that was just how it got shaped, or that Corgan directed Jimmy to approach the kit in a way to evoke that sound, didn’t realize they actually looped it. As for the band playing in general, as I said earlier, in their prime at least, I think everybody in the band was capable of coming up with as well as playing effective supporting parts…but nailing them time and again perfectly over and over in a studio setting when the clock is running is a totally different skill that, from having played in a lot of bands, a lot of musicians just don’t have (or take a lot longer to hone it). That was one thing Corgan had over most of his bandmates without a doubt, and it probably would’ve been a rough situation regardless, but it was made a thousand times worse by his lack of trying to explain or dampen the situation and basically just replacing their parts without their input, lol

This is hilarious. I was living in New Haven in the early nineties before Smashing Pumpkins became famous. I played bass at the time, and an aspiring local band promoter asked me why I never came to see any of the bands he was promoting. I am very blunt, and replied that I didn't like the bands he promoted. He then said, "i've got a band coming to play the Moon (a popular local club at the time) Friday night. Their name is Smashing Pumpkins and they are going to be huge. Come see for yourself, I'll even guest list you. I agreed to come check it out and did. After three songs I could take no more, and my promoter friend happened to be by the door as I was leaving. "Are you coming back?" he asked. "No thank you. What the hell is that noise?" I replied. "I'm going to downtown." When they were famous a year later I was absolutely gobsmacked.

@@EcoSandy the early 90’s might’ve really been the best time, because even though I like a bunch of the Fat Wreck bands, the way that sound got copied/pasted was a terrible thing to happen, as just before that you could go see 3 bands that were all great, and all had a different sound. I actually like a couple of SP songs, but the majority is garbage (“a few good songs, does not a good band make” I always like to say). There are a bunch of bands I love from that time, but I think I miss J-Church the most (if you don’t know them, they’re essentially pop-punk, but don’t let that keep you from hearing them, they were much better than that label would suggest, and had so many different sounding songs that you really couldn’t only put them in the pop-punk box completely. And their discography is ridiculous, I don’t even think anyone in the band really knows how many things they released, but Prophylaxis is a perfect album if you ever care to try it out)

I'm in the same boat with Smashing Pumpkins as I am with Pearl Jam. There's a handful of songs I really love, especially early on in their career, like "Drown" and "Disarm," but beyond that, I'm not really a fan. Like, I can't even get through Rotten Apples, the best-of comp from 2001. Billy Corgan is a HUGE asshole, and even though I believe in separating the art from the artist, his shitty attitude and his increasingly nasally voice are tough pills to swallow. I'm surprised you guys didn't mention that they wrote a whopping 50 original songs for Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. 28 made the original cut, and even that is undoubtedly, indisputably bloated. Even the decent songs feel half-baked because it's abundantly clear the band didn't scrutinize or polish the good ideas they had nearly enough. And of course, it's not the same without James, Darcy, and the drummer.

Not in the sense of style or dress, which is how it's usually meant when people describe bands this way, but in the early days (first 2 albums), the Pumpkins wre a very striking band visually, just based on the members natural features...D'Arcy, the vaguely androgynous, pale female bass player, Iha, the Asian hipster guitarist (still a rarity in rock bands, oddly enough), Jimmy with his long hair looking like he belongs in Zeppelin, and Corgan when he still had hair had a certain visual charm about him as well (I still remember seeing Hole back in the '90s, with Courtney introducing "Violet" by explaining how it was about Corgan (without directly naming him at that point), and how she'd "put a hex on him, and now he's losing all his hair" lol

I'd be more into it if it wasn't so arbitrary with it's statements, but GREAT concept and I'm just one dummy who likes the Smashing Pumpkins. DEAD ON about Billy Corgan's voice not being sellable had it been a solo acoustic band/project.

D’arcy was a heroin addict. She had a lot of problems. She was attractive but Billy was awful to her and she had a lot of issues.

Will you two crybabies PLEASE release your song "ZWAN" as a single?!? I don't know, maybe get FLOOD or 3D or Diplo to produce it, maybe title it "The Zwan Song" like Crisco "Thong Song". Hot n Spicy remix featuring Tricky (trip hop emcee). Peace to the grease in the middle Easter basket ball speed demon.

Forgot to mention I'm sick of Johnny Rotten imitations which Billy Corgin does incessantly.
