SMAUGUST 2022 - Week 4: NEW LEGENDARY 

To be fair it's pronounced Flan, not Flan. Easy mistake to make.

Elorimada looks pretty cool and does seem to have that sense of beauty, but you could also add opportunist concepts into it, several omnivores who can be both prey and predator will eat whatever they need to or can in their environment; whether it be carrion, live prey, fruits, or anything else they can eat at the moment to feed themselves. Yet they still also have specific kinds of food they will eat if they can. This idea of taking advantage of every moment or advantageous possibility both fits with the themes of the other two and makes it unique. Also possibility making it longer and more slender in design would help with that beautiful feel your going with, plus Meso-American dragons tend to be a lot more serpentine in their design

i think the purple and pale yellow color combo works the best. the two colors are opposites after all, sort of like the regions peoples beliefs. its also prettier but more than that i think the colors work best in that one!

I feel like Dragon-Fairy typing might fit Elorimanda more, given it's secondary theme of Beauty. I think perhaps changing the head structure resembles Hylarmos a bit too much, and there is less insectoid features present. I like the look of the "shed skin" being a different color than the main body, and the tail could definitely play a bigger part in it's design. Maybe you could have the shed skin resemble more rocky patterns like those on Hylarmos, and change the main body to resembles Maripome more with some antennae or longer, more defined insectoid legs, to represent how it is in-between change and traditionalism, and is capable of leaving the past behind while staying true to itself (with the head reminiscent of those same patterns mentioned above).

I feel like Elorimonda should look forward and not to the side. Makes it look like it sides (pun intended) with the insect legendary and prefers it over the reptilian legendary. If it faxed forward rather than one side, it would truly look like a middle ground between both.

I like the themes of the new legendary, and how it represents a sort of middle ground between progressivism and traditionalism. We might want things to stay preserved and unchanged, but some things can’t go on forever. I really like the beauty of that. Kind of reminds me of the way death is seen in hispanic cultures, which might be another good way to tie it in with the other two legendaries. To illustrate the duality more you could make some parts of the shedded skin slightly withered and discolored, but in a way that has it’s own kind of beauty. Some parts could even be flaking off making it look like flower petals in the wind. Might be neat if the people of the Mazah region believe that their pokemon evolve thanks to the influence of this legendary, as it’s also a process where they emerge as a new form but retain part of their past self. Lastly the colors and faux clothing it kinda looks like it is wearing traditional japanese clothing, which could be kinda unfit for the mazah region. Might be a good idea to make it look more like the traditional clothing from the region itself instead.

While Elorimanda looks more like a Dragon/Fairy type, I think Dragon/Psychic is smart for type competition against the two other legendaries. With the fairy type, it is strong against fighting and takes half damage from bug type; it does not have an advantage over Ice/Poison. However, being dragon/psychic, it has an advantage over both one of the legendaries' types of fighting type and the poison type. It is also weak against the legendaries' bug and ice types. It creates a reasonably balanced trio. Also, with the color scheme for Elorimanda, why not all three? Just make it reflective of the changing of the day-to-night cycle. Purple and yellow for the pad, purple and dark pink for the night, and pink and pink for the dawn and dusk respectively.

Combineing a stalk/ egret and a croc works so well, they blend oddly naturally together

I think the yellow tinted shed skin for the legendary reads more like "shed skin" to me, and works really well with the purple :-) other than that I love the design

I was unsure about the psychic typing at first, but then I realized that being dragon/psychic makes it weak to both ice and bug, which creates cohesion with the other two! Visually I think the design is nearly perfect, it fits right alongside the other two and isn't too similar to either of them over the other. Brilliant concept, excellent execution!

The legendary feels like it should definitely have one of the gimmicks like giratina palkia and dialga what's their origin and base forms but perhaps in a way wear it could either regress or progress in it's shedding perhaps based on something one could obtain from the other two legendaries

I love Elurimandra's design and the way that the shed skin looks almost like ceremonial robes, but I am not a big fan of the warmer shades of pink you chose as not only does it make it look more like a fairy-type than a psychic-type, but it also causes the shed skin that should be a focal point in the design to disappear. Palette 3 has the right idea of having it be a different color so that it stands out, on top of selling the shed skin-look even more as its pigments has sort of faded with time. The whole concept of a legendary having once looked entirely different but has changed its appearance multiple times is something that I actually has used for one of my own legendaries as well. It doesn't look anything like Elorimandra but it is kind of funny how a similar concept can be developed in two different ways... In the case of my legendary, the changing of appearance is more tied to the end of an era and the more destructive aspect of change as it marks the point of no return. It doesn't always have to mean that age that follows has to be worse than the one that came before, but the present has to give way in order for something new to take its place. In the lore of the region I am developing, the legendary in question was the first Pokemon capable of evolution (it also happens to be the origin of the white light that surrounds the pokemon when they evolve) and belonged to the First Age of Life before even most fossil-pokemon were around. But since the evolution-process wasn't perfect yet, the catastrophic amount of energy released upon its first evolution caused the First Extinction where almost all life came to an end. This has only continued on as the times has changed, causing natural disasters with every evolution as it comes closer and closer to reaching its fully mature state. According to ancient folklore, it will only reach maturity once the world is at its end.

One interesting detail you can do is to make the eye have a blue foggy effect, or just be blue. Reptiles like snakes about to shed have a couldy blue eye and it would be a cool detail to show that it can shed again, or is constantly shedding, never static and always changing/adapting. If you go with this, the blue and purple design will probably work better, but you could also make a pink and blue color scheme work just as well. I think my favorite dragon from this week has to be the fruit salad dragon, not just because I love fruits, but I also think it is one of the more unique dragons in terms of color, and who doesn't love a good hydra?

I LOVE the “shed skin” concept behind Alurimonda! It looks incredible, and the whole thing really lives up to its name (which is peerlessly clever, BTW). I think I like the more yellow-colored “shed skin” best, but that could because I know how well you work kn the the whole pink-and-yellow color spectrum.

Elorimanda is a lovely design, I particularly love it's skin that's been styled like a silken shawl with the spiked hood that to me partially hints to the tale of it's old form and how it's head may have been shaped as it looks like it has eyeholes kind of like Scrafty's shed skin. It's simultaneously a lacey silk dress but with a bit of street wear hoodie influence. For me colour scheme 3 is what fits most, I like it's regality and how the golden shed skin compliments the purple and black. Maybe this is unrelated but the description of the legendary makes it feel like it's an uninvolved entity that's completely separate from the concepts of modernity and tradition that has one or the other thrust upon it by onlookers in their division, when I imagine that this third legendary could be the coming together of the two concepts instead of existing outside of those ideas. There is a beauty in when modernity melds with tradition, tradition can gain something from being slightly modernised without being abstracted and modern ideas can gain a lot from taking notes from and respecting old traditions. Great work as always and particularly with the concepts behind the legendries, it's a fun topic to think about.

Maybe giving Elorimonda a third eye could be interesting? Drives home the psychic typing, but it gives it an eye on the front, like a predator, accompanying the two eyes it has on the side. Might look a bit odd, but could be cool.

I really liked the orange in Elorimonda’s color scheme giving it the appearance of a sunset, a literal transitional color scheme. The pink and purple is also a little visually mushy and I think adding a little orange could help that.

I personally liked the purple/yellow color scheme best. It references both of the previous legendaries colors a bit and the soft yellow looks more like shed skin to me!

I like how the new legendary look, but I feel like that it doesn't really land in the middle design wise, it looks very reptilian so I feel it is closer to the predator/Tradionalist. An idea I had, which think would work pretty well, especially with its lore, would be to give it two forms. This one being the first or original one, were it decides to not risk change and therefor staying in its form, thus taking the side of the traditionalists. (This would also give it a reasons to look more similar to the traditionalist legendary) and than a second form were it shed again taking on a new from which maybe goes more in an insectoid way, maybe taking inspiration from an orchid mantis. the only change I would do is to give the first form a different slightly different Colour as the current one would fit the orchid mantis one better.

elorimanda's whole skin-shedding thing really reminds me of the modern trope of aphrodite changing appearance to fit whatever someone's image of beauty is. really an interesting connection!

I loved this month's theme and your designs, they really inspired me to challenge myself more and try them out! Btw, all of us here in Spain pronounce flan like you do :) (I didn't know there could be others...??)

Your ideas and creativity are really incredible, I love sitting and watching these dragons and fakemon come to life. I’m also a big fan of the third Elorimanda color scheme, with the more yellow shed skin. The contrast is nice.

The funnel cake dragon is too cute! It looks so playful, it's perfect for a festival food.

That yellow shed skin on the fakemon is definitely my favorite of all of them. Not only does it have more contrast, but the description saying it "looked entirely different before shedding" is all the more clear by a different color. It breaks up the pinks really well

While I do love the current design and the relationship it has with the other two legendaries, while it may sound silly, I think this new legendary should be equally insect like and dragon like. Like maybe cicadas (they molt so that's why I suggested them) and snake like. It might even add an extra layer if the more reptilian side is based on a reptile commonly preyed upon, and an insect that is seen as a predator. Or the two animals it's based on are naturally predator and prey but have created a union of sorts. I just feel like the design is too reptilian, so it feels more like it's closer to the reptilian legendary rather than be a middle ground between the two.

I love elorimanda as is. It's an elegant, but formidable, and intimidating design. I love that the shed skin looks like a silk cloak. I like the psychic typing, since elorimanda represents internal perspectives on the outside world and the ways that these perspectives mold peoples actions and the world around them. Maybe some feature of elorimanda could look less physical and more ethereal or malleable like slime to reinforce that theme.

.I'm for the violet-lilac skin with a creamy shedding colouration. - .I think the shedding could have less rhombuses, 2 pairs per limbs is enough if you ask me. (Unless it somehow represents the 3 legendaries.) - .Maybe nose-holes? I always thought of featureless snouts as stone-like, instead of organic. - - That's all for me, I love your work. Honestly, congratulations, Elorimanda is astonishingly magnificent. I'm just nitpicky on things, doesn't mean it's relevant.

I know this is super tricky, but I'd love to see an elaboration of a more androgenous form of beauty. The robe and pick is super pretty, but it'd be refreshing to see another perspective on beauty. Still, great designs!

I feel a possibly good line of action for the finished pose of Elorimonda would be somthing like an 8, it would allow it to be more centered and therfore more nuetral to both sides, and could have a pose similar to say a victorian woman hiding behind a fan; something that pops into my head when I think of beauty. (Think head tilted down and to the side with eyes looking up to the viewer) This would also allow you to still show the unique head shape of Elorimonda without it needing to make it feel it has chosen a side and is instead looking forward and can go either way. Or you could give it another head and have them face two directions, that may make the design busy though.

I absolutely love the the third color pallet so much! The skin looks as though it’s made with gold or rose gold and it balances out the other legendary’s colors as well!

The fruit salad dragon reminds me of King Ghidorah's personalities

These videos are so relaxing. I love your art style as well as music choice. I honestly look forward to these videos so much every week. Out of all the art channels I watch Subjectively has to be my favourite. Keep up the great work

I see so much potential for Elorimanda, so lemme weigh in on an idea that popped into my head whilst you were explaining your design process for them. Elorimanda’s primary type is Dragon and only Dragon when it’s first encountered. But I think it has the ability to gain a secondary type that can change into anything ( with the exception of Dragon of course ) when certain requirements are met. When you mentioned that it sheds its skin and keeps it, it gave me the idea that it’s secondary typing will depend on the skin it has shed and kept. Reptiles shed their skin so they can continue to grow, but in Elorimanda’s case, it sheds its skin to change its secondary typing so it can adapt. The mechanics of it would be behind both a different ability and its signature move I would say. The ability being responsible for the type change, and the signature move being the trigger. The ability name could be “Skin Boa” and the signature move could be “Resplendent Scales” The mechanic would be whenever Elorimanda uses Resplendent Scales, a Dragon-type move that involves shedding its skin as an attack, it then triggers her ability of Skin Boa. Skin Boa would have Elorimanda aesthetically retain the skin it shed after the attack, and would give them its second type depending on the type of the last attack it sustained. So the only way to change its secondary typing is by meeting these requirements. Furthermore, if the last attack Elorimanda sustains is a Dragon-type move, and they use Resplendent Scales, they reset to their base mono Dragon typing. So with those mechanics explained, my suggestions to Elorimanda’s aesthetic design is that it’s base color palette could be more neutral, but the shed skin that they’re wearing changes it’s color to indicate it’s second typing. In a way, it would be similar to how Arceus changes it’s type from it’s base Normal type into any other type depending on what plate it’s holding. But the difference would be, unlike Arceus who changes it’s mono Normal type, Elorimanda’s ability only changes their secondary typing and still retaining their primary Dragon type. Well, there you have it. That’s what my imagination came up with. Exposition over. Hope you like it. 😊

I love how the dragons get the food inspiration across really well without just being made of food,these designs would also work as well designed creatures anywhere else

I love that the third legendary in the trio kind of expounds upon the positives of both traditionalism AND progressivism and that each side have different (but still positive) perspective on it. Your designs are amazing but the thought process behinds them is what really keeps me coming back!

i quite like the rightmost elorimanda color palette at the end-- of the three, i think it evokes the shed skin look most effectively. typically when an animal sheds its skin it comes out looking more vibrant than it did before, and more vibrant than the skin it leaves behind. the faded pinks and yellows also just give the shed skin an older vibe that seems appropriate.

you thinking of eclairs as a fancy treat is so funny because mine is completely opposite. my nana would always make a million of them for every family gathering, the pastries BURSTING with custard. for me its very 'open up nanas fridge and get a snack' kinda dessert

Eclairs, birds, and dragons are three of my favorite things. The eclair bird dragon is a great design. Also love the hydra dragon fruit salad and the Baklava dragon is giving me Blue Eyes energy. Funnel cake dragon has some adorable whiskers! Elorimanda is honestly awesome, though no matter if change is required or not, the change in appearance actually would fit it's lore unintentionally.

What if Elorimanda was a fusion between the two box legendaries, combining the two to create a Mon that represents Unit or Coexistence. Appearing both reptilian but also Insectoid, this would also probably give the story of the Mazah region a more compelling narrative, about how separate Traditionalism and Modernist are but how they can be combined into one to become something that keeps what came from the past and preserve it in the future....does that make any sense?

Everything came out so great as usual man! Love how forthright you are about realizing some designs need to gestate. As for color palette for Elorimanda, I'm enjoying what the pale yellow brings to the table to widen that color palette. I think it adds a refreshing pop to that spectrum of the soft warm colors it has. That aside, I love the concept of the shed skin for both the lore and design motif that gives it a great elegant feel. Great job!

I love the concept behind them, I think the color pallets of maroon with cyan shed skin that you had beige looked more fitting though, that and as someone pointed out, they should probably be longer and more serpentine because they just look like a traditional eastern dragon rather than an Aztec one and they should look in the center as to make them seem fine with both change and tradition

I think your final color scheme looks the best on Elorimonda. I can't wait to see what other amazing designs you can come up with.

This is my favorite legendary you made! The shape of its cloak is my favorite part of it! For the color scheme, I am partial to the third. The shed skin looks ethereal, like the robe that Princess Kaguya wore funnily enough!

The baklava dragon looks cool as hell. I like how the design still feels intimidating despite it being based on a pastry. For elorimanda, I think there needs to be a larger emphasis on the "shed skin aspect" so that you can tell it is both holding on to tradition and moving forward and evolving. Maybe it's shed skin can be worn like a cloak. Maybe give it a ghost psychic or ghost fairy typing so that it's typing matches past and future.

The color scheme at 11:23 was spot on. The design is otherwise perfect imo. Edit: congrats on Smaugust, you've been killing it. I'll definitely watch the last episode. I still think you've never had a proper tiramisù though; come to Italy, ask a grandma to make you one and I guarantee you'd change your mind, but most importantly you'd never draw a tiramisù dragon with strawberries ever again!

Some say that fairy is a more fitting type, however.. I disagree! 👓 Psychic is super effect against both of box legendaries, while the ability to look into both past and future has always been associated with the psychic type. Moves like Amnesia and Future Sight are psychic type. Just because a pokemon is pink, don't make it a fairy.

The third, sunset-y orange version was really nice. It blended blue/violet tones from one legend and the orange of the other, but also they're beautifully contrasting colours that can work well together to make something beautiful. Two opposites can work together.

I think the purple and yellow shows the skin shedding motif the best. Also feel that more aspects of the bug could be included cause it kinda just looks like a dragon shedding its skin

I think you should some how incorporate the Predator and prey theme into Elorimonda’s design somehow. Maybe Eloriomnda could be a scavenger of some sort? Idk I also think some people should believe that Elorimonda was at its most beautiful before it shed it’s skin; that way you have three groups people, the nostalgic who long for the past, The traditional who believe it is perfect as is, and The modern who believe something even more beautiful will come along.

these dragons are just as good as the rest, i love your work and style! keep it up. also i imagine that in the game you could choose to have it shed its skin or stay the same and there could be an even more beautiful version of it, if you so choose.

I really like bread pudding. This might have been my favorite week, though I also really liked last week. Truly the dragons ever. Fruit salad was such a Summer Vibe I Can't Describe. Funnel cake was perfectly wormy, loved that one. Elorimanda is such a wonderful concept, I love it so much. I think the early pink and yellow color scheme was my favorite, but its current palette is also beautiful. I feel like its body shape is a little generic, I think it could serve to be more bizarre, but I don't know.

I think including accents of purple and green could help connect Elorimada to the other two legendaries. Right now they’re soo pink that it feels a little disconnected

Really great designs all around, regarding the legendary, I’m really fond of the pale yellow and purple. The pink and purple definitely works too. I really love how the shed skin was incorporated into the design, they almost wear it like a robe lol

Elorimanda is a great concept and a cool first draft. I think it should either have elements that are explicitly a combination of the other two like a mid point. Or be intentionally different. Might be out of left field, but I think trying to do a design almost like butterfree still had the metapod skin as clothes type feel but way more legendary

(for the third legendary pokemon) For the colors, I really love the orangey-creamy color of the third design, and the pink of the first, it would be so cool if you make the final design pink fade into orange!!![the second one looks too much like Hylarmos]

Looks like our 3rd legendary is here, and it looks AMAZING, I LOVE IT

As our new legendary is meant to be an intersecting point, and there's some argument about if it could be more beautiful vs is already as beautiful as it is going to be, I almost wonder if the shed skin should have some shared traits of the two Box Legendaries to it. In that anybody who looked upon that skin could make an argument it looked like either of them previously in favor of their own viewpoint. ('Oh, the shed skin looks like (x) because of color so clearly it is this that when pursued becomes more beautiful' 'No, it clearly has the markings of (y) so it is this one that becomes more beautiful!') But can also lead to a middle ground of 'Neither idea is perfect how it is but both are beautiful things'

12:36 I really like the iteration on the right. The lighter colors of the skin give off royal vibes, and it reminds me of the yellowish color that shedded skin has. It also contrasts nicely with the purple.

I imagine the wedding cake design as two great wyrms coiled around a mountain.

Just found your channel and watching this from the start and I am very impressed by how many desserts you've had lol. I don't have a sweet tooth so I've only had basically your stereotypical American treats: ice cream, cake, cookies, etc, so I can't say much when you talk about most of these treats. What I HAVE had is éclairs and was very surprised when you said you've never had one despite having seemingly had every other dessert under the sun. I thought it even funnier that you pictured it as "elegant" when in fact if you've ever had a Long John (type of donut), that's literally all they are only small. I find Long Johns to be like the funny midwestern southern treat/snack you can pick up at a gas station and are as basic as a glazed donut. Needless to say I don't see éclairs as elegant by any means haha. Anyway, your art is very lovely and I've enjoyed these dragons very much; you have a very keen eye for details and are fantastic at combining elements to make these sweet treat dracos.

Funnel cake is freaking awesome!! Especially when topped with some sort of fruit like strawberries or whatever but I actually really like it...

Seeing the Fruit Salad dragon really makes me wish Smaugust had featured more colorful desserts! The vibrant colors are just so beautiful and play so well together, and I absolutely love your choice of depicting this dessert as a three-headed dragon! Of course, I like all of the other dessert dragons too. In regards to Elorimanda, I'm a huge fan of the purple and yellow color palette. The pink and purple is kind of... muddy? I don't think it's monochromatic enough to benefit from the monochromaticness, and the purple and blue palette just makes Elorimanda look very associated to Hylarmos while neglecting Maripome, ruining the balance imo. I feel similarly about it having such a reptilian origin being some sort of serpent, but the only other kinds of animals that molt in the same way are crustaceans and amphibians. However, it would probably end up removing the dragon typing if it weren't a serpent, but you've more than managed to challenge the typical idea of a dragon before. These are just my own thoughts though, rather than true critique, so if you want a serpentine dragon go for it! Elorimanda's shed skin looking like a cloak is such a good choice, and it mixes the elememt of organic material and beautiful fashion very well. I like Elorimanda's concepts of general beauty and the beauty of life, but I think right now it kind of lacks the depth that Maripome's modernity and Hylarmos' traditionalism has, which is probably because Elorimanda isn't associated with a specific feeding behavior to draw metaphors from. So I suggest making Elorimanda a detritivore! Those creatures that clean up our forests, oceans, and everything we live on by eating the things we discarded. Making sure that nothing is left to waste, preserving even the unseen in the cycle of life. It doesn't seem like Elorimanda actually concerns itself with the conflict between Maripome and Hylarmos. Maybe there's a sense of irony in there, that humanity would worship Elorimanda for all of its beauty, but would be unknowledgable of the beauty it itself seeks. Scavengers are typically prey animals, but at least they're not the first things to come to mind.

I really love this legendary conceptually. The idea of valuing both modernism and traditionalism by keeping the old skin as a beautiful mantle on top of the new skin is suuuper cool

I like the yellow-purple variation of the colours, as these are opposing colours and could reflect the opposing views on the Pokemon itself :)

Love how the mazah legendary dichotomy of tradition versus modernity is actually in the Paldea region

I love the silhouette and the shed skin part in particular. I think the colors could be improved, pink jist seems a little too on the nose for me, but I'm too biased with colors to make a proper reccomendation. Not sure If I'm in love with the headshape, I think you could really play with the head's silhouette and make it crazy. Overall though, I love it, and the head ribbons and earpieces are great.

With Elorimonda I think the color scheme you landed on with the shed skin being yellowish drives home the concept more than the pale pink. Shed skin is usually white or a very pale yellow, and coloring it according I think would make the theme stand out more. Maybe try a color palette with a white shed skin? Otherwise with it being pink or blue it looks more like an accessory the pokemon grabbed instead of something that was once part of it.

Eclairs are my favorite treat, and you did it justice! Though, finding some is pretty tough!

I really like the purple coloring with the almost orange shedding. That's my personal favorite of the colors.

The dragons this week were beautiful as always! I loved the fruit salad dragon the most. For Elorimanda, I preferred the third color option, with the creams and purples. It's much prettier to me, and feels more cohesive with the other two to me

I think associating beauty with pink is an easy route, which makes purple more interesting, and to me it looks more like an ancient legendary color.

I do enjoy all of your content and I love this week's Baklava and Eclair dragons in particular, but few things give me more excitement than your fakemon designs and this majestic floaty danger noodle did NOT disappoint either!

The middle, more purple-y colour scheme is my favourite, but I think the rightmost yellow one best represents that it completely changed form, since the yellow is not seen elsewhere on the body

In many cultures around the world gemstones are considered beautiful, or at least they have some unique value, I think giving Elorimonda some gemstones around it's body or just one from a certain size on her chest could look amazing. Btw. Loving all your designs in your version of smaugust, definitely my favourite of your challenges!

I feel like the shed skin of Elorimanda should have kind of a white/transparent look and even more protagonism on the design, just to break up the colors a bit and make the intention clearer at first sight

Love the design so far If I were to add a suggestion I would do something interesting with the tail, u could make it look like theres a see through layer of shed skin over it just to sell the concept a bit more great vid

The third design for Elorimonda is definitely the most beautiful and thereal for me, really captures the vibe!

12:36 I'd say it is hard to pick from the bottom two. Definitely not the top one, it's colours are too similar to the predator legendary. My leaning is to the bottom right as the yellow makes it less monochromatic and helps define the shed skin more.

The pink works so well and giving it a second form makes since here just like how all 3rd legends have alternate forms
