After months of excess toxic milk being dumped on land west of Interstate 15, residents of Greenville are worried about ground water contamination. For decades, the hill was a dumping site for whey, a liquid derived from cheese production which is often used as fertilizer. But for months, residents have been documenting trucks dumping large quantities of milk that become toxic on the hill.

I worked at a dairy processing plant many years ago. Milk came in and was packaged. Sometimes it did not sell by the date stamped on the package. We had to manually empty all the containers. We put them in old 5 gallon milk containers. Those would then be taken to a hog farm and fed to the pigs. A much healthier way of getting rid of spoiled milk.

Hi Patric - When we received a residential complaint in July, we ceased utilizing the agricultural field in Beaver County for these activities and sought alternative options. Most recently, this includes sending the milk to an anaerobic digester that utilizes food waste in Salt Lake City to generate renewable energy. Contact environmental organizations who can help. Raise funds if you have to. I'm familiar with Beaver County and it's too beautiful to harm in this way. I still think one of the most vile things I've ever smelt, was when one time we had a backup for a few trucks loaded with milk containers. Keep in mind the containers are already "spoiled/old" if there is any milk left by the time they reach us. So for them to sit for almost a week in the humid summer was brutal. The entire factory just had a heavy stomach churning smell that was unavoidable. Even while doing yardwork outside with a forklift it was still such a dank disgusting smell.

There probably isn't. Unfortunate reality of farming is that excess often isn't rewarded. There's always a need for good food (maybe not here or in your/my community, but in other parts of the world or in poorer areas), but the issue is putting out too much can bottom out the price for milk, leaving it unprofitable to make. Basically price drops where it can't cover itself, because on average, people don't drink *that* much milk. You have limited intake of a perishable good. What would've been nice is if for the milk, right before its sell by date, they donated it to shelters or poor communities. That's something they need more than the expired crud-in-a-can that most households donate. Instead they decided it was more profitable, or just easier, to dump it like a bad Captain Planet villain. Economics. Explaining the worst aspects of society and making you feel bad since its conception.

The argument that this milk is going to release a dangerous amount of nitrates into the soil is a little bit destroyed by the fact that we aren't seeing huge amounts of vegetation directly adjacent to the pond. For those who are unaware, nitrates are the key ingredient in most fertilizers. We should see huge shrubs all over the place if that was happening, even in Utah. Also, I'm not a dairy farmer but, it seems to me, that the goal of dairy farming is to get that stuff into jugs and get it onto the supermarkets shelves. I don't think that dumping truckloads of milk into a pit was part of anyone's game plan. I'd be a lot more interested in why they had to do it than the fact that they did it.

Wow, that’s unreal. If it’s been going on for years, what are the new changes to milk for this to be happening now ? I hope they find a way to resolve this issue.

They aren't making the whey for fertilizer anymore. That means excess milk.

Sometimes you just gotta take matters into your own hands. I say shoot the POS thats the ceo responsoble for this. And the lawyers state officialls and the rest all involved who are clearly taking money to look the other way. Its time for citiizens of this country to take back their country. Start shooting now. F the questions. Its time for the crooked POS who run this country to die off.

They inject the cows with lots of chemicals like growth hormones, standard practice. There's a new shot they're also now being given (take a wild guess) If you drink cow's milk you're not only participating in incredible animal suffering but setting yourself up for hormonal cancers and other diseases.

According to the press release, they have an excess of milk due to hot weather. I am not sure how that logic works. Perhaps the milk is spoiling and unusable, and so they dump it on Whey Mountain.

That's what happens when you cut funding to every single environmental agency in the country.. You should see what the coastal commission has to go through.

Trump is the one that cut all budgets to the environmental agencies. This was done by Republicans to help their buddies in business make more money. Environmental safeguards cost money and cut into profits. That is why the Right side is against the safeguards.

Three people died the day I was in hospital for infection by flesh eating, antibiotic resistant bacteria in the water near Miami Beach! There are no signs to warn people because they do not want the corporations to lose tourist revenue. Corporate farms doing the polluting are protected by Florida's government.

Can someone explain why it’s blood red if it’s milk? I’m genuinely really curious if anyone can give me that answer I looked it up everywhere but can’t seem to locate an answer.
