Colonial Williamsburg blacksmiths are smelting Iron in a bloomery furnace to make wrought iron.
I just completed a 52 minute movie called Ore to Axe. It takes you on the journey of finding ore, making charcoal. building a furnace, smelting the ore to iron, converting the iron to steel, and finally forging the axe.

I remember when I first started playing Minecraft and had no idea how to smelt iron so I looked it up and this video was the first result.

The bloom is the hot lump of iron that comes out at the end of the smelting processes. The material that runs out during the smelt is the slag or the impurities in the iron ore. After the bloom is removed from the furnace at the end of the smelt it is hammered into a bar while it is still hot.

They started in the morning with a preheat, by late afternoon they were forging the bloom.

there is something i dont get, in medieval times they didn't have machines and advanced technology so HOW were they able to melt iron, witch burns at 1000 degrees. how were they able to achieve such high temperatures????

Hi guys,how many kgs of wood charcoal required to make 1kg of iron from it's ore by such a blast furnace as in the video, realistically...not the theory ideal stuff... thanks

Why does the slag run out, but the iron itself not run out? If the iron melts, wouldn't it run out too? Or is it because it is not hot enough for the iron to fully melt (i.e. it is very hot, but still solid, not molten/liquid?) Do you leave small cuts at the bottom of the furnace so the slag can run off?
@kevkeary4700
@kevkeary4700 5 лет назад
the slag is tapped to run off and the iron bloom stays put. I think slag has a lower melting point than iron, because it has impurities in it.
@diablohorer

does it work with firewood, or is this technique only possible with coal?

Aside from my post below, I have a few questions. 1. How hot does the bloomery need to be, and how do you maintain that temperature? 2. Can anything else be used for a fuel besides charcoal? I assume the charcoal in this video is made from wood, which would be a very tedious process for me. 3. How much of this fuel should I expect to use in a day of smelting?

Don't you mean the smelter produces "pig iron," not "wrought iron"?
@Handcraftedtradition

Not exactly dirt. It has to be iron ore with an iron-oxide of about 70 percent. The ores commonly used in bloomery furnaces are classified as limonites, though higher grade ores will work. In this type of furnace, too high a grade ore will result in cast iron.

They used bellows to provide the air to raise the temperature of the fire to smelt and melt iron.
@Handcraftedtradition

Mostly charcoal was used. It burns hotter than wood. To see the whole process of charcoal making to Iron smelting and then making an axe, order a copy of my movie "Ore to Axe" See the link above.

My new video Ore to Axe will answer many of your questions. It shows the whole process of making and axe from iron ore. They produce a solid 28 pound bloom from the furnace and make part of it into steel and then forge an 18 century style axe. Look for the links to the trailer and movie above!

Adding air to fire can raise the temperature enough to melt or burn up iron. Many a beginning blacksmith has burned up a piece of iron they were forging by giving the fire to much air.

Fire needs oxygen to burn. Try burning a candle under a closed dome. It goes out without oxygen. If you give a fire MORE oxygen, it will burn hotter.

I don't understand. Where is the bloom? Is that what is formed as the iron leaks out of the bottom? Is that what you meant by it "grows"? Meaning it just keeps melting and pouring out in the same mass, thus growing larger? Thanks for the video.

You can make charcoal from firewood, but the process takes quite some time. If you want to experiment with making your own furnace on a small scale, you can create a small fire in a contained space. use a metal or clay hollow tube and pass a continuous current of air through it. The oxygen makes the fire burn MUCH hotter.

You can start a fire on a block of concrete with wood, and hook up an air pump from an air mattress to it and get something hot enough to accidentally melt your knives. Air is crucial.

Have you experimented with trying to create wrought Iron from steel and lesser amounts of other metals such as tin and aluminum via De-carbonization in the bloomery? I am currently building my own forge and bloomery and hope to be able to make soft ornamental iron from scraps of steel but first want to soften them up more than traditional annealing can do. Hope to hear back from you soon.
@empiregeneral31
@empiregeneral31 12 лет назад
@music1account You'd essentially have a very porous and rough bloom (maybe) in the shape of your mold. The bloom needs to be forged into the shape of your desired end product like they were doing at the end of the video. Blooms are very spacious and weak when they're first smelted, once they're hammered down and the structure is compressed, then you have good working iron.

+Steven Griffin Steel is just iron combined with carbon, perhaps they added carbon into the process.
@U1GoN2d1

wouldnt the charcoal be the carbon since charcoal is basically carbon
@jnharton
@jnharton 7 лет назад
A quick google reveals that the distinction between iron and steel is the amount of carbon, not the presence or absence of it.
@Folopolis
@Folopolis 7 лет назад
The difference between iron and steel is mostly just naming convention. It is nearly impossible to get pure iron without carbon in it. There are standardized steel alloys specified by ISO and ANSI and anything that has a carbon content lower than the lowest specified by those is generally called iron (I forget what exactly that amount is). I'm guessing that despite the fact that there will be carbon in this iron, it would not be called steel.
@Folopolis
@Folopolis 7 лет назад
After a second thought, depending on the amount of carbon in the iron, it can be called 3 things: wrought iron, steel, or cast iron. Wrought iron has very little carbon and can be quite soft. Cast iron has a lot of carbon in it and is strong, but brittle. Steel is in the middle and there are dozens of standardized grades of steel depending on the exact amount of iron and how tempered or annealed it is. This process is producing cast iron - after hand forging, the vast majority of the carbon falls off with the silicates as slag and you are left with wrought iron. Throughout history the vast majority of iron implements were made from wrought iron with the Celts having steel and then a millennia later the Norse and Japanese independently rediscovering how to get that perfect amount of carbon. People knew how to make cast and wrought iron since the earliest days of the Egyptian civilization, but they could make Bronze stronger or more durable, and much more resistant to corrosion so the iron age was put off until they lost access to tin from Britain.
