Rose’s reaction to seeing the Smile Monster’s true form went from total fear to total amazement. Whoever designed him deserves a raise.

It was more like was experiencing a real life nightmare for worse any other earthly fear she had ever seen, but once the demon revealed its true form, she realizes. It’s not awe or amazement she’s feeling, it’s helplessness. She can’t do anything. As I said, her situation is so otherworldly terrifying that she gives up, and it’s what makes this scene so disturbing. It feels real, especially the “NOs” like she’s trying to stop the nightmare

I'm never right on predictions but I think it'd be interesting if Rose passed on the entity to Joel and the sequel kicks off from this exact moment. Then throughout the second movie Joel is then experiencing everything Rose tried to explain to him, and perhaps finds out about the "kill someone and let someone witness it" thing. Then Joel plans his own way out of the whole thing by say taking a call about a crime taking place or something and he and another cop go together, then have Joel shoot and kill the suspect in front of his partner leaving him as a witness, so the entity now adapts to his partner, and then Joel shoots him and kills him, breaking the cycle so that it can no longer be.

Very interesting theory

The only counter theory I can propose is that the prisoner dude said that it spreads through trauma. Unless the murderer is some robot, the 1st murder of another person is bound to bring trauma. I don't think necessarily watching the suicide of a person is the only method for it to spread. I think it's the death of the person who spiritually manifests the entity. Ultimately the whole idea of the film is that trauma spreads through people, the monster is only an anthromorphism of this trauma. But effectively the film conveys an idea that trauma can never be rid off, and no matter how hard we try, it always comes back in some way. The monster, is the final manifestation of trauma, and the events leading up to it represents paranoia within victims. The suicide can either be symbolic for either succumbing to one's trauma and killing one self under the weight of it, or it can be taken literally in the narrative as a means to spread the entity. The movie proposes a break in the cycle where you must kill someone in the presence of another person. I think this reinforces this idea of trauma spreading, and the only reason why the cycle breaks for the initial victim is because the trauma has successfully passed to another person. However under this theory I do not believe it's possible to break the loop, because under a broader social context, trauma can never truly be recovered from as the film suggests, and it can come back to haunt. And so if the cop guy lured two people into a trap and ended up shooting both of them, supposedly killing the entity, I don't think it's how it works. The cop would've witnessed it, and even if he didn't see it, he would've lived with the thought that he killed someone. And this, I believe is the catalyst required for the entity to spread, for trauma to spread. Albeit pessimistic I think it's a creative way to demonstrate the contagiousness of trauma. TL;DR I don't think it's possible to break the cycle as the trauma will be passed to the killer. Final hint: the movie name, Smile. Another pessimistic idea: the nature of humans doesn't call for us to help each other when we think people are insane (or those affected by trauma in this instance)... and people end up moving further away. This is demonstrated consistently throughout, e.g the birthday party. And so, the smile, is a faux mask to cover the internal monster that haunts our minds to blend in, but deep down its not the case. This is an interpretation of many, and I don't think it's the correct one either. But that's the beauty of literature 😮 Looking at the movie one way provides a heavily pessimistic perspective on trauma... but at the same time, by being pessimistic, the film opens discussion to more optimistic alternatives and solutions. Although I think trauma cannot be recovered from fully, we can definitely help one another... urge each other to look beyond fake smiles. It's a call on mental health and trauma. By helping, listening and moving beyond superficiality, the monsters of our mind won't find it to be a place so inviting anymore. But they still remain, dormant, waiting for a catalyst. Albeit it's a cool thought exercise, and the movie deserves praise for its creative approach in demonstrating the nature of human trauma.

I don't like this movie. I used to look up Smile the movie in year of our lord, Two Thousand and Nineteen, and It would show the one from Nineteen Hundred and Seventy-Five. As of the damn year, Two Thousand and Twenty-Two, now when I look Smile up, this comes up. Unacceptable!
