Elle fanning's acting is just breathtaking in this scene. She makes Jesse look enchantingly innocent yet slyly confident at the same time, especially when she's just sitting in her chair amongst the other girls waiting for her group's turn.
The guy who plays the fashion designer too. His emoting through the whole scene really drives home just how ENCHANTING Jessie is when it come so modeling. Even when he snaps out of his combination of interest, admiration and lust, to go back to business and ask for her card, only to literally have his breathe taken away when she walks. The actor did a REALLY good job of what could have easily been a hammed up scene.
I once had an audition where the people at the table talked amongst themselves throughout my entire audition aria. When I got done, they said, "Thank you" without even looking up. I found out later that they had already cast one of their regulars in the role, but they had to still go through the charade of holding auditions. I had flown from the Midwest and stayed overnight in a NYC hotel, all on my own dime, just to attend that audition. Good times.
I used to think modelling was easy breezy. I don't model but I have a friend who gave me an insight into the struggles and rejections and the judgements models face.
It kind of oddly adds to the innocence of her and her observation skills. It felt like she was noticing the squeaks and slams of the others as well and trying to identify why and then not do whatever caused it. When she initially turned and started to walk I noticed there was a bit of a more relaxed flow to her turn and step that wasn't there with the others.
The fact that her walk is one of the only walks we don’t get to see. We only see how he looks at her while she’s walking, just further establishing that the whole point of this is his male gaze. Absolutely gut wrenching
I wouldn't describe a man naturally finding some aspects of a woman attractive as 'absolutely gut wrenching'. Especially when that woman is entering a competition on the basis of her looks. The whole set up for these industries can and is objectifying and dehumanizing, but women are part of it just as much as men, often at the top too.
notice how jesse was the only one in white while the rest of the girls are in black or tan? even from the beginning of the movie they wanted to show how “angelic” and “pure” she is. beautiful work by everyone involved
Costumes, hair, and makeup are some of the most under appreciated departments in the business. They are SO important, but they don’t get nearly enough credit for what they do
what the hell are you talking? about 0:14 sec in, the group of girls sitting, there's a girl in ultra-white bras/panties all the way on the Left. theres another girl in white a little further back in front of a pillar, and theres another dang girl in white all the way to the Right.
She is gorgeous. But I fear what he liked was her age/virginity /childlike look. I think it means something else in this film. And the virgin makes predators hungry.
I don’t think so. Sarno is portrayed as a gay man in the film. This is confirmed when Gigi accuses Jesse of having an affair with him. Jesse replies with “I don’t exactly think I’m his *type*” and then Gigi snaps “why? You’re very masculine”. Sarno was simply enthralled by her appearance, like most people in the film. It wasn’t in a sexual / predatory nature
I think the directors are just creeps which all neon movies prove and that’s not really how the industry is. The young inexperienced girls aren’t treated so nicely, no matter how beautiful they are
Being a model is incredibly dehumanising, it is made out to be this wonderful glamorous thing, but it really isn't. I was in a competition at 16 and was made to stand in a bikini with a bunch of adults measuring my body as an insecure teenager, it was absolutely disgusting and awful.
It is such a crazy thing. These women are all insanely beautiful. They have gone their entire lives being told their are beautiful then they enter a world where EVERYONE is beautiful. Where every single inch of your body is picked apart like an animal for sale. I wouldn’t do that if you paid me. My self esteem would never recover
@@allshookup1640 Exactly. I was in a modeling competition at 16, an insecure teenager and was made to stand in a room in a bikini with a bunch of gross adults measuring my body and commenting on it, it was absolutely disgusting and I am so happy I did not get sucked into that world. I was a child at that age, these people are groomers, why do they only seek out teenagers in these competitions, it's extremely gross.
@@mckitty4907 that is so gross. Unless you are modeling bikinis or underwear, they don’t need to see them in them. Yes it adds a TINY bit but a cami and leggings would be totally fine! So gross
Why are you so shocked by this, when you live in a world where the human being is a completely hackable animal? Who will be sold off as parts in the human block chain?
@@KanadeLapis I understand that & I got what they were trying to show...however, I will say that everytime Sarah came on screen, my eyes never left from her.
I saw this on acid with two literal neon demons. The movie made them uncomfortable, I enjoyed it but noticed the people watching the movie with me was basically the blood sucking witches and made it all awkward as if they were watching themselves on screen. 😂
I love this scene because it perfectly encapsulates the intended catharsis of the film. The obsession/predation of innocence in hopes of eventually corrupting it. Sarah's character has been in the industry a while and was initially in Jessie's position before the industry inevitably corrupted and mutated her "purity" (which is really code for naivete). This is evident by her lack of preparedness and experience before her walk. In any other field of work, this would deter potential employers, but in this example, it works to her benefit because lack of experience and know-how means she is more susceptible to being taken advantage of. Jessie is the object of adulation by the designer in this sequence because he sees her as the proverbial "new toy" to play with. He is a creep. Beautiful visual storytelling implies he used up Sarah's "purity" last season and therefore her "value". Because she is no longer as easily manipulated, he has lost interest in her, on to the next poor ingénue. Abbey Lee's beautiful portrayal of Sarah displays the character's disillusionment with her perceived value in an industry she loves but is consistently abused by. Jessie and Sarah serve as personified representations of beauty before and after it is corrupted by obsession and predation. One woman is not better than the other in terms of beauty or grace. They are products of a prejudiced and deeply problematic industry that inevitably destroys the very thing it covets. This is also visually displayed by all of the black and brown models being few and far between and tucked away in the background. The film highlights the grotesque status quo estimation of beauty in the fashion industry which is guided by the larger discriminatory and sexist societal perspectives on a person's value.
The opening shot is pretty cool. Jessie's in the middle and all the other models are pointed towards her or looking at her. It shows that she is the main attraction (both in the movie and in the audition) but they also have frustrated and envious facial expressions.
Elle has such a beautiful long neck- I loved her in this role- she really proved her acting chops. It was such a twisted film on an aged old subject, I loved it.
My friend was model all her youth. She had more then 30 covers. And she said you’ll pass one of 10 casting and it’s okay it’s part of the profession. No drama.
Sarah (Abbey Lee) was a top model in the late 2000s/early 2010s. She was a Gucci exclusive and the face of Gucci “Flora”, was on different Vogue covers, and walked for Dior, Chanel, Versace, Hermes, D&G, Fendi (basically every high fashion house). She’s still modelling…
Tfw they try to make you believe an actual supermodel isn’t walking properly. Okay Refn, we get it, but maybe don’t cast an actual model like Abbey Lee for this part, even if she is flawless in it
I think that's the point tho. Sarah is gorgeous, experienced and can do the job. But like she says in a scene "who wants sour milk when you can get fresh meat?" All Jesse had was her beauty, which was the only thing that mattered.
I haven’t seen the movie, but that’s not what I got from this scene. It’s obvious the supermodel is very good at modeling. The lady says, “You remember Sarah” for a reason. Sarah is the same old, same old. He’s taken by the new and unknown Jesse. It’s not skills, it’s newness.
It wasn’t necessarily the walk. He wasn’t interested in her from the first glance. They often make the decision in the first two seconds of looking at someone, and have no qualms about showing it.
So both actors who played Elle's parents in "Ginger and Rosa" are in this movie too? And her father in that one is the same guy lusting for her in this one....
I always thought Dakota was a very good actress for her age and I didn’t know her and Elle were sisters. After watching “The great” Elle Fanning to me is one of my favorite actresses
I don’t know what to say ! Modeling is like torture , I know some models who have suffered badly , I feel sad 😔. and for what ! to be judged by men stereotyping what beauty is about ? We are all beautiful in our own ways . ❤❤❤❤❤
@Ophelia around 57 min into the film Gigi and Jessie are in the dressing room, dialogue goes like this, maybe this is where it came from? Gigi: You certainly move fast. Jessie: What do you mean? G: You must be f***ing him. Sarno doesn't let just anyone walk his collection. J: I don't think I'm his type. G: Why not? You're very masculine.
She says that this is the girl that did your blah blah blah show 2 years ago. And he responds like “oh that bitch, yeah not interested” even though he didn’t specifically say it, his acting portrays it
@Viktor_vonthe_Rhaefnhyrst I just don’t have the time to sit around and ponder things like this. I’ve got a busy life, speaking of which…thanks I’ll keep chasing the dragon in mind…
And if we talk about the guy, I myself cringed about how exagerated his reactions were. As if the director expected the viewers to be super dumb and tryed to make it as obvious as possible, otherwise people won't get what he meant. "Art-house for the ones who are dumb, but wanna feel smart because they watch art-house". The acting and directing were outrageously bad here. Like ewww, such bad choices. That's where I stopped taking this movie seriously. It was obvious it's gonna be dumb but pretentious as fuск. Better watch a Lantimos' movie. He is woke and leftist too, but much more talented, smart and respectful towards the viewers.
