Smilodon populator, could he kill a horse?

When there's a horse sculpture and a Smilodon skull at the workshop, the outcome is inevitable.
Hope this sheds light into the ability of the sabertoothed cats. This is certainly very convincing evidence that Smilodon and the machairodontine cats were spectacularly well equipped to dispatch prey in a very efficient manner.
Hope you enjoyed this video.
Thank you for tuning in.

I was on the fence on seeing a demo. I wanted to see the skull go thru the motions of delivering the killing bite to the clay model of the horse but at the same time I can only imagine the hours spent on making the model of the horse and I would be cringing to see all that work ruined for a demo. love the saber tooth cat information. if possible, maybe make a mold of the horse's neck and use some kind of gel for killing bit demo that way you can clearly show the killing bite without ruining hours of work.

@regularsizeruss3874
@regularsizeruss3874 Год назад
I think that's because most sources available to the general public theorize that they preyed on MUCH larger prey like Giant Ground Sloths and Mastodons (I just watched a video that said exactly that right before this one.) and because museums very rarely display the skulls in a fully open position. There does not appear to be room between the upper and lower teeth to bite anything larger than a lemon from most images commonly available.

@Abdi-libaax Месяц назад
They probably scavenged bullied others off kills. But then why have such massive teeth? With the prey struggling and moving you would think the teeth would break.

it definitely could do that if the sabers of a smilodon fatalis are capable of going through a dire wolf skull, and fatalis's canines werent as thick as populators
@Alberad08
@Alberad08 5 месяцев назад
No doubt abou that - especially because you pointed out that the predator's teeth would have come into use when the prey was already on the ground. What I mean is, these teeth, whilst looking very stong, may though have reached their stress point if they would have been inserted into a running horse, given how much momentum would have been at play in that situation. Well, thank you very much!

You are not understanding the argument. It's not a question of brute force, it's simply that it doesn't appear, in the vast majority of displays and photos of Smilodon skulls, that there is enough space between the upper and lower jaws to bite large prey animals... even on the throat. It's probably because they rarely show the replica jaws at full extension.

the way the fangs protrude .. it look like it wouldn't even open its mouth to stab similar to how a walrus uses its tusk... what do u think of my theory... considering it had a weak bite force
@wheelmanstan
@wheelmanstan Год назад
Possibly did both. Look at African lions, they squeeze the throat or they'll cover the nose and mouth to suffocate. If the prey was moving and running around then it would be too dangerous to try and sink those teeth. It would have to wait until it had the animal stable to bite it. So it's likely they used that walrus type headbutt to stab the pray in the neck, to bleed it out a bit or damage the airway. The size of the pray was also a big factor. All cats have their own way of killing, they'd have figured out what works. What's crazy is knowing that these cats weren't biting the big pray at all to bring them down...at least not until couldn't move and was about to collapse. Lions get on top and bite the legs and throat and these cats can't do that. They'd have to wear the animal down and push it over with their massive shoulders. Still, these teeth and T-Rex arms still have me scratching my head.

Try Skulls Unlimited they claim to have S. populator for $325 that's seems rather low in cost but make sure it's actually from a cast of that species as I have seen sellers mistake S. populator casts with S. fatalis as the later cast are very plentiful and once they change hands it often confused to species. Find out the origin of the cast manufacturer and what scientific institute the cast originated to verify actual accuracy. A reputable dealer should know an accurate history of the cast manufacture and scientific origin. Ask questions.

What if they attacked from behind with their jaws closed and drove the canines into the eyes (and brain) of the prey ( only preferred select prey, Megatherium etc.) holding and immobilizing them with extremely strong forelimbs! This is a theory I have!
@EarthshipFreedom
@EarthshipFreedom Год назад
I thought this exact same hypothesis, only because of the relatively small jawbone and it would leave the cat in a bad spot if it got stuck with its teeth caught in the prey. But there are species of saber tooth where the jaw bone fully protects the teeth in the closed mouth position, so thst cat would have to open fully to kill prey.

I would not be surprised in the least saber cats evolved specifically to kill horses and/or animals that are in the horse's niche like a camel type animal. I know that South America had some weird looking animal that looked like a camel with a trunk.... basically, it had a reasonably long neck like a horse so if you specialized in killing horses, transitioning to this animal would be pretty simple to do as a specialized predator.

Dietary isotope studies from intertropical Brazil determined Smilodon hunted wild horse (Equus neogeus) alongside camelids and xenarthrans. Further south in Chilean Patagonia, similar evidence points towards sabrecat having hunted Hippidion (with additional feeding on Mylodon, Macrauchenia and rhea).

So wait, you are saying Smilodon, after it bit its victim at the neck, would just as quickly drew its head back without opening its mouth, dealing devastating damage? I thought it would keep its maw around the neck untill the prey animal was dead, but i guess that would put the canine teeth in greater danger, since they are brittle at the sides...
@smerjeevski
@smerjeevski 2 года назад
Exactly, Machirodont canines, even in the casts, retain a sharpness along the edges. Panthera has the same ridges but on much smaller and more conical canines. In Populator the canine is thicker than those of the Siberian tiger. Plus the immense length. In some instances the biting could have been continuous and prolonged but in the case of a neck bite on prey, the teeth are fully capable of slash/ripping right through.
