Smoke, a short film drama revealing the story of a firefighter returning home after the most arduous shift of his life, will be screened at the Allen Public Library at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 28.
Allen Fire Chief and executive co-producer Jonathan Boyd will introduce the film and be available for questions after the viewing. The 2023 film was directed Joshua Gallas whose professional work has taken him to Turkey, Nepal, Uganda, Brazil, and Kyrgyzstan.
Firefighters confront traumatic events, physical demands, and a challenging work-life balance. Retrieving a deceased victim can lead to PTSD, intense smoke and heat can result in long-term health issues, and lengthy hours and irregular shifts can strain family relationships. Chief Boyd explains, “Smoke encapsulates the balance between the demanding responsibilities of first responders and the difficulties of reconciling the emotional dichotomy between work and the complexities of family life. This portrayal underscores the challenge of empathy bridging the gap between these two worlds, offering a glimpse into the struggle when those who handle crises need help themselves, and the profound impact it has on those we love.”
Division Chief Williams who leads the Allen Fire Department’s mental health outreach will also explain the ongoing efforts to improve the resilience of our first responders.
Due to licensing restrictions, the program will not be broadcast virtually.
