How to build a smoker. This smoker can be attached to a pit or any other smoker and can be used to cold smoke a variety of items. After building it and making the video i realized i shouldn't have used galvanized pipe. I DO NOT recommend using galvanized pipe and instead recommend the use of the black pipe.

That is true but the heat will have to get pretty high, i have found that you can soak the parts in vinegar to remove the coating if you want to be safe.

Brilliant idea.. Have you tried to run it with the pipes on the bottom (upside down compared to this orientation)? It's the main difference between Bella Smokin It and the Big Daddy smoker. A RU-vidr showed the Bella Smokin it to be more precise. Also, could you, please, provide a part list for ease of replication?

You talked about about changing the canister to S/S, you might want to change out all the galvanized parts too. Even though there aint a lot of heat, its best to keep away from galvanized. galvanized metal will release toxic fumes when exposed to heat.

If zinc burns at 900 degrees then this should be safe to use galvanized right? He was clearly touching the pipe with his bare hands and even said it only gets warm. I’m just wondering cause I have all the materials in my garage already so

Could you use some charcoal briquets to start the process? Braking them up & lighting them with the lid off. Also, maybe setting the can on top of an electric cooker. Like a single burner variety. Just some thoughts. Also how do you connect it to your smoker or gas grill? Thanks
@crimsonfancy
@crimsonfancy 9 лет назад
1timby Yes, you can use charcoal pieces but maybe not necessary if you use pellets or small pieces of wood. If you flange your smoker, you can easily connect this to add supplemental smoke. I say this as I'm familiar with the set-up.

I made mine like yours and I am using a 20-40 gallon aquarium pump for the air and I drilled five 1/8" holes in the bottom of my smoke canister but it won't stay burning. I made sure that the pipe that goes inside the T goes beyond the length of the T towards where the smoke comes out. I got four 1/4" holes drilled in a line at the bottom for my draft. Do you have any suggestions? Andy

I was wonder what the best ratio between pipe size and how far to put air supply before or after T so thanks for video. What I need now is to set up a chute for wood pellets to keep hot pellets close to fresh air. After the pellet burns it should fall to the side and underneath so new pellets can burn smoke next to fresh air intake with out hanging up. last night I used a 3 ft 8 inch black stove pipe with a mixture of sawdust and small maple kindling size wood started fire with briquets.smothered fire when hot it smoked for 8 hrs but as wood smoldered further away from air the smopke supply went up and down not steady got any ideas let us know
@em2012ish
@em2012ish 10 лет назад
Yea the difficult part is getting the proper air flow. The air will be sucked through the holes at the bottom, however if these become clogged with ash then embers will die. I have since moved on to a more simplistic more hands off design that doesn't use a pump. I hope to do a video soon. It is comprised of a v-shaped channel of stainless steel that is perforated. You start it on one end and it will burn slowly from one end to the other while releasing a thin blue smoke.
@em2012ish
@em2012ish 11 лет назад
The primary reason that it won't stay lit is that it isn't getting enough air, you may want to give it some more holes. It could also be the moisture in the pellets, you can remove excess moisture by popping them in the microwave for 30 seconds or so.

I don't know if you know this but smoke machines for finding vacuum leaks in cars cost about $1,200 at the very least. Some models are around $3,000. This simple home DIY smoker is a great way to find vacuum leaks. The only difference would be needing to have to add a clear hose at the end of it and maybe a few different connectors to fit into the clear hose. This way you would be able to see the smoke working its way into the car's test points. Nice video and explanation.

I found a Pampered Chef Bread Tube at Goodwill for $1.99. Going to try this as soon as I have a second to put the parts together. 40 gal Aq. pump sounds about right. I also see that the supply tube should be about 1/4" from the inside of the output tube. Does that sound right?

You want your pipe from your pump to clear the hole, up from the can by about 1/2 inch, not all the way through. Also make sure that there is no leakage where the pump pipe goes into the T fitting. You want all the air coming from the can. Think of it like a syphon but just with air. I hope you see what I mean. I'm not so good with words sometimes.

Sure, I just connected it to a air duster with a hose barb. You may be better served looking for another source of air because i found that a compressor will add alot of unwanted moisture to the mix.

You can use brass tubing with compression fttgs. Bulkhead fttg tees exist also, but, maybe not big enough for the air tube to run thru. Lot of that stuff is available at places like Home Depot, or for some of the more oddball stuff like the bulkhead style fttgs, a heavy truck dealer, or a hydraulic hose shop.

vicarofrevelwood what should I use instead of galvanize pipe ? which material should I look into. thanks
@RimWulf
@RimWulf 7 лет назад
vicarofrevelwood wood smoke is toxic by nature. Galvanized steel has zinc which is what your body needs, BUT if you get it in excess then you can die. Lots of vents in your house has galvanized steel even your stove vent which is unlikely to harm butt there's a small chance. You can also use galvanized steel with food it's technically food safe so long you don't use anything with acid like lemon juice the galvanized steel with the avoid will turn into a salt and is easily by the body and told get an overdose.

@em2012ish 10 лет назад
3/4, make sure you buy iron not galvanized
@dcmccart25
@dcmccart25 8 лет назад
+e g By "iron" I assume you mean black iron pipe, commonly used to pipe natural gas to house appliances, such as water heaters and gas furnaces. As a chemist, I believe this will be likely to produce less toxic fumes than then galvanized surfaces, and at the operating temps you're encountering here, it's probably quite safe. So yes, do use iron pipe instead, just to be on the safe(er) side. imho

instead of a can just buy you a cheap stainless steel pot with a snug fitting lid and drill the three holes in the bottom on the side
@em2012ish
@em2012ish 10 лет назад
you can but the lid will need to be quite snug other wise the smoke will escape and a more vertical cylinder lends its self to fuel flowing down, imo

Just finished building mine. The only mod that I made from yours was I capped the air input and drilled a hole to secure the air tube. Started with a 40 gallon fish tank pump that didn't have enough volume so I moved to a 100 gallon pump and it seems to work great!! For God's sake! Don't use galvanized parts in heating applications! Even if you argue that the zinc is on the exterior, this is not a risk anyone should take. Also, maybe get a stainless steel grain container. They're pretty cheap and can be similarly adapted to accept standard (uncoated) fittings.

I wonder if this guy is still alive. Galvanized pipe or galvanized anything can cause birth defects just from touching it while pregnant. Any idea what the vapor will do. If you smoked your meat or cheese in an car's exhaust pipe it would still be 10 times safer than galvanized

I wonder if this guy reads descriptions and the many posts below telling you not to use galvanized.
@garysampson5258
@garysampson5258 9 лет назад
Most municipal water supplies expose the water to galvanized piping at one point. I am so sick of the wannabe food police bastardizing solid science. Zinc (galvanizing) has a melting point of 419.5° C or 787.1° F. That would kinda defeat the purpose of cold smoking, don't ya think? So stop believing all the tree-huggers and self appointed food police on the internet and follow the science.
@crimsonfancy
@crimsonfancy 9 лет назад
joe dermody back up claims with temps º that cause dangerous fumes using galvanized? If you check into it more, you'll see that the temps º he's working with here are well below the danger levels of burning on galv. I'm not here to support using galv and there are alternatives, but no need to start an alarm.
@crimsonfancy
@crimsonfancy 9 лет назад
Gary Sampson I second this. I would much rather use an alternate material but no reason to alarm the group without details and links to backup.
