⚙️ EPISODE #213: The final smoothing of a tabletop before finishing can be tricky. You want to make sure it’s truly smooth and beautiful with no pesky defects or machine marks showing up during, or worse, after the finishing process. And you don’t want it to take all day either! In this episode I show a few nice options and the one I currently use to get great results. Hope its helpful! (Closed captions)

You are the nicest carpenter I have ever seen on the web and in all my life. I am impressed not only by your skills but your mood as well! Congrats to your wife too!

Thank you, thats kind of you to say 😎. I never thought my wife, aka “the camera lady”, and I would ever be working together in this way. With our three kids grown and out making their way, it’s a new and surprisingly enjoyable chapter. And getting to share what you love doing is a pleasure as well. Thanks for watching! 👍

After watching a Ramon Valdez video, I bought a Makita 9404. It’s 4” wide (4x24 belt) and the platen IS….drum roll…..7” long. It’s a beautiful machine when used for exactly what this video is about. As a bonus the handle placement differs from the 9403, and it sits very nicely upside down on a workbench….stable enough that I’ve never had to clamp it in place….very handy.

That’s great to know, thanks! I was hoping it would be comparable to the old Porter Cable locomotive style. Now you have me wanting to go out and get one! 👍😎 And thanks for watching too

I would love to restore that Porter Cable BB10. I have always admired those who had them!

👍 Thanks 👍 I was taught to flatten a with a belt sander at about a 45* angle to the grain this was particularly useful on glue ups that was about 60 years ago as long as you keep moving it worked/works, back then it was the only machine available to do this. FYI I still use it even with a shop full of tools

Yes, I agree, I got started using one and the belt sander was indispensable in Pug Moore’s (my mentor’s) shop. It is an underrated tool, and can do great work in experienced hands. I’ve heard some say the Porter Cable 500 series belt sander was the best tool/machine Porter Cable ever made! Thanks for watching! 👍😎

I have an old AEG belt sander with a frame, Festool has a exact copy, not available in the US yet I believe. The frame prevents gouging. Ramon Valdez has some good RU-vid videos on belt sanding, worth watching.

A board that size was once illegal to use during Colonial America. Trees of 24" or more in diameter were reserved for the King. After processing, a board of 19" or more got you in trouble.

I have the 4" makita. I really like it. However, the rollers are bad and no longer grip the paper. Having trouble finding replacement rollers. I just bought a craftsman belt sander but I have no idea what size it is. Got it for a great price and didn't even look to see the size.
