This is my attempt at a tutorial explaining how to perform unintended exits in Super Mario World. Super Mario World is a notoriously glitchy game, allowing the player to go beyond what was intended by the game designers. Normally, there is a total of 96 exits in the game. Over the years, dedicated gamers discovered several unintended exits (see pastebin.com/w... for list).
I want to find novel unintended exits. I previously shown that triggering a normal exit in the Top Secret Area does not yields an additional exit in the game file (see • SMW ǀ Unintended Exits... . Here, I want to trigger a secret exit in the Top Secret Area. For this, I used unintendedly spawned Key and Keyhole in the level. First, we have to perform the Powerup Incrementation glitch to get Mario at Power Status 8 (see • SMW ǀ Unintended Power... for tutorial). At Power Status 8, go to Yoshi’s Island 2 to get the Key in the item box (see • SMW ǀ Unintended Item ... for tutorial). After, repeat Powerup Incrementation to go to Power Status 211. This Power Status allows Mario to spawn a Keyhole in the item box when collecting a Feather (see • SMW ǀ Unintended Item ... for tutorial). So, go to the Top Secret Area without Yoshi. Spawn the Yoshi and used it to grab the Winged Key in the item without being hurt. Leave the Key and Yoshi on the left and the right side of the central block respectively. Hit the left Feather block. Quickly, go on top of the Feather blocks and jump to catch to floating Feather. Try not to touch any input when collecting the Feather. Being at Power Status 211, Mario now has a Keyhole in the item box. Spawning the Keyhole will renders the Key invisible… but it is still there. Grab the Key with Yoshi and touch the Keyhole to trigger a secret exit! After saving in Donut Ghost House, we will get an additional exit in the game file :).
So, here I found a secret exit that is accounted in the game file. However, I don’t know if Top Secret Area secret exit represents a new unintended exit or corresponds to a previously known unintended exit…
Hope this video can help you in your quest to master SMW famous (and awesome) glitches.
My setup: I use an original Japanese Super Mario World cartridge played on a Super Retro Trio 3 Console (PAL version); I thus played in Real-Time Attack [RTA] without Saved States. Crappy video (and sound) captured using an ‘EasyCAP’ USB adapter (S-Video signal) and ‘Honestech VHS to DVD’ software. Video editing done using Shotcut free software.

HAHAHA!!!! All that work for just that?!?! I guess after all these years it’s kool to see something different, but if it’s as pointless as that when you have to do as much as you did just for it. Idk if I’d waste my time doing it. I’d rather just watch the video of someone else doing it lol.... and

I meant something along the lines of when they created the game and put that exit, they could’ve added some kind of bonus level or turned Mario into a different color or something, you know?!

@@kylejohnson1655 Thanks a lot for your response. All these unintended exits in SMW were not designed by the programmers, but were discovered over the years by the smw community. Usually, these UE yields only an additional exit in the gamefile. And this is just what I got here! But you're right, it would have been nice to have some sort of bonus! I think in some smw Romhack, some have put a secret level after the Top secret Area. Anyway, all the best and have a nice summer!

Part 2 would have a link to part 3 in the description, and comment. It his new ACE that I found. Part 1 you will see how long it take to place that long ACE, and during that time, I did not know that I could have just change one peace of Memory instead of Reloading the save state. Part 2 his a continuation of part 1, and that one shows how to change player 1 to player 2 with ACE, and how to give Luigi an item in Reserve while doing the ACE as Mario this will also show that you don't have to load save state, as long as you do not reset, and you don't have to write the entire code again to change a different thing you only have to change the 3rd ACE. Part 3 Will show how to ACE Power incremenation to Luigi while doing ACE as Mario, to have the required Item to Start select out of Switch palace glitch. Normaly you can't start select out of switch palace since after it his cleared you can't re-enter, even while holding L and R.

@@goonn337 I play on an original Japanese SMW cartridge (that I bought online) on a console. I video capture the S-video and audio signals with an USB device. Does this answer your question... Cheers!

what is the long way to get the key in the item by incrementing then getting a mushroom? its a high increment, but you get winged key. then you could just do the last step the way it is and the whole thing will still work.

Hi BananaX-man! Sorry the lateness of my answer. So the quickest long way to get the key in the Item box by doing the Powerup Incrementation glitch is to get to PS 108 and collect a 1Up-Mushroom. For sure, like you say, there is different way to get this exit. We just have to try it!!! Thanks and all the best!

Hi Yoshigamer3000! Going to PS 211 takes about 2 and a half - 3 hours of total game play. I usually spread this over 2-3 days. I play RTA on a original japanese SMW cartridge on console, so no save states! Thanks for the question! Cheers!

@The Unintended Gamer: 0F = 15 if you always divide 15 by 2 it will never share evenly, in order for 15 to be chair evenly by divided by 2 15-1= 14/2=7 the minus 1 you have to put that his the binary number, now we have the same situation with 7 we have to minus one to make 6/2=3 now we have two 1 in binary, the same thing happen again 3-1=2 2/2=1 so 3 one's for binary, and then the same thing again 1-1=0 0/2=0 4 one's for binary, so binary it would look like this 1111, or also like this 0000 1111, then what about F0=240, since that in binary would be 1111 0000, lets prove it 240 is even so it his 240-0=240 that 0 his the first binary number 240/2= 120, 120 his even so 120-0=120 so we get a second 0 for the binary, 120/2=60 60-0=60 third 0 for binary 60/2=30 30-0=30 4th 0 binary 30/2=15, 15-1= 14 so the 5th binary number his 1, 14/2= 7 7-1=6 6th binary number his a 1, 6/2=3 3-1=2 7th binary number his a 1, 2/2=1 1-1=0 the 8th binary number his a 1. 0/2=0 In a video game if you fall the Y value increase.

@@TheUnintendedGamer: When a glitch happen in a video game that cost it to execute a code made by the X cordinated of sprite. Since normaly without a glitch the X cordinated of sprite left over in memory are never executed as code, first the player place the written code with the X cordinated of sprite, in the case of Super Mario world spiting red koopa shell as Yoshi, and the glitch will tell the console to read does X cordinated of koopas as code, but that his a written code made in Hexadecimal, Hexadecimal mean every 16 his a 10, this his why 0F his 15, and 0A his 10, but the console does not understand that, there his a compiler that will change does into binary equivilant of that value, Binary mean every 2 will look like a 10, but why does every 2 look like a 10 in Binary, because in binary a video system, can only understand with on or off, off mean 0 and on mean 1. if one light switch his on that his 1, can you make that light switch more on, no you can't make it more on, so in order to represent 2 with light switches, you will have to turn the first one off, and then turn the 2nd one on, since now the first one his off, you can represent 3 by turning the first one on, now light switch number 2 his on, and also light switch number one his on that mean 2+1=3 now since two light switch his on to represent 3, what happen to represent 4, we turn off light switch 2 and 1, and we turn on light switch 3 to represent number 4, then if we turn on light switch 1, that his 5 because we don't touch light switch 3 again untill the renew his full again, then we turn of light switch 1, and turn on light switch 2 that his 6, because light switch 3 that represent 4 his still on. light switch 3 his on that represent 4, and since light switch 2 his on that represent 2, light switch 1 his off, 110 in binary, meaning 1 his in the 4 section, and the 1 his also in the 2 section 4+2+0= 6 if we turn the first light switch on it would be 111 in binary 4+2+1=7. If you still don't understand look at this in real number what happen to the 1, every time you multiply by 10, it move to the left by one 1x10= 10. 10x10=100, then 100x10=1000, the same thing happen in binary every time you multiply by 2, and the same thing happen to Hexadecimal number when you multiply by 16 which 16 mean 16 pixel, remember with the wall kick glitch in Super mario world you can only do that at every 16 Y cordinate pixel, that his because 16 in Hexadismal as a unit of 0, and every the unit of 0 that mean mario his standing on a floor. 16 his a 10 in hexadecimal, 16x16= 256 which would look like this in hexadecimal 100

Hi O Alvorecer! In this video, I did several times the Powerup Incrementation glitch to get Mario at unintended powerup state. In some of the unintended powerup state, Mario's appearance can be quite glitchy, and sometimes Mario is not shown (invisible) when riding Yoshi, like @4:26. Mario is still there and I control him like normal! Thanks for the question! All the best!

This video is awesome. However you can also do it by using cheat codes for the key and keyhole in item box, and I got a new exit in Forest Fortress. It probably spawns the star road warp in Star World and it's a TEST level I think.

Hi ChutacoackoPlayz! Thanks for your comment. I wanted to perform unintended exits without cheat codes, using a regular cartridge. Regarding the unintended secret exit of the Forest Fortress, it will work and trigger the normal exit of the following Star road warp. However, I think that doing this, you will not be able to get the normal exit of Forest Fortress (because we cannot re-enter a fortress...), so at the end, we don't get an additional unintended exit. want do you think? I am now practicing the unintended exit involving going through a pipe 256 times (wrong warp), like exit 101, 104 or 108. Cheers!

Hi Sapphire! Of course, you are right, it is possible to trigger an unintended secret exit in a level which does not normally have one. Check out my channel, I have several example of what you are talking about. Hope you enjoy!

@@TheUnintendedGamer Yes, I know about unintended exits, but from what I've seen they're often pretty complicated, becouse you need a certain setup to swap a flagpole or something like that. I also thought that you can't do them in every level becouse they don't have the right stuff. But this method would technically be possible in any level with a feather right? So why not just use it on every level and get to almost 150 exits.

Hi lakearea! I did this unintended exit playing on console with an original Japanese SMW cartridge, RTA. I think it is possible to do this on emulator also, if you want savestates. Thanks for the comment and keep on gaming!

Hi there again: with the top secret area, I seen a video called “secret island level??” The player jumped up through the last 2 ?blocks and it unlocked the unchartered island above it, which was called that. With your unintended exit here, it doesn’t unlock it... so maybe it was a fake hack video.

Hi Double C3! I have seen the video you are referencing to. I think it is a fake. I believe that with LunarMagic, you can 'open' normal SMW and check all the exit, and this has been done many times, by many gamers... if there was a secret level above the Top Secret Area, it would be more common knowledge... Also, I did either an unintended normal or secret exit, and doing this does NOT unlock some secret levels, as seen in my videos... Anyway, I still experiment with new unintended exit in SMW. @@TheUnintendedGamer your videos basically beat a normal exit level by way of a 2 exit win. It’s so cool that can be done, and when they are, it usually opens up the level ahead of the one Mario would normally go to next.

@The Unintended Gamer: his there a power-up state that can give a key in reserve by takeing a power-up, but the same power-state can give key hole in reserve box from taking a diffrent power-up, or bringing an item to the goal with the same power-state can give key hole.

Hi Nick! No, there is no single power-up state that can give you both a key and a keyhole by collecting different power-up items. sorry (it would be too easy if it were to be the case...). To get a key in reserve by collecting power-up item, you have to be at either power-up state 108 (1Up mushroom), 112 (Feather), 120 (Fire Flower) and 128 (Mushroom). The fastest way to get the key is to be at power-up state 8 and do a item swap glitch in Yoshi's Island 2 (see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UPPh6KCCfM0.html). The only way I know to get the keyhole in reserve is to be at power-up state 211 and collect a Feather (this setup does not always works... don't know why). For the Goalpost keyhole spawning, you have to be at either power-up state 96 (spring or P-switch) or 103 (kuppa shell).

@@TheUnintendedGamer: That would not help make it faster with ACE since everytime you used ACE you lose the item you have in reserve, you would still have to manuelly do it from 128 all the way to 211, to prevent losing the wing key, I'm not sure what power-state it was he used a key at goal tape, and the key turn into a key hole and the mario his all black, I was hoping that one was higher then 108, or 120, 128 would bringing a key at goal post be the same as bringing a shell at goal post? Edit: Turn out it was power-state 89 for bring a key at goal pole to make it a key hole, that his only going to help me by douping a block on a yoshi coins, and if that yoshi coins happen to be on the X cordinated of the key inside a ? block to be able to get 2 keys

@@SuperNickid For me, what I found hard and time consuming is to get at power state 211 to get the keyhole in the reserve (what is even more frustrating when the game freezes when I collect the feather...). If I could use ACE to get at 211 and get the keyhole, after it is 'relatively' easy to die and get at the appropriate powerup state (108-128) to get the key in the stage, depending of the powerup items available. Using this procedure, you could get several unintended exits. Using the 'keyhole spawning at the goalpost', you can only get Chocolate secret and Funky secret unintended exits.

@@TheUnintendedGamer : If you used my method of ACE, it his ok for power-state 211 you just have to change it to Hexadisamel value, for the game to understand 211, but it his not a good idea after to do the ACE for 108-128 depending on the power-up available, since the ACE involve holding select and the key hole in reserve would get release, and the majority of ACE used select. To prevent the Crash with power-state 211 when takeing the feather, to spond the key hole, make sure slot 11, and slot 10 are full, since you get the wing key out of Reserve slot 11 his occupied, just spond a power-up out of a block that stays on the block, and that does not comeout of an egg. It freeze because key hole can't interect with slot 11, and slot 10.

@@SuperNickid Hi ! To get the Keyhole in the reserve, I did as you said and it works!!! So, I manually perform the powerup incrementation glitch to get mario at powerup state 8. Then I get the key in the reserve in Yoshi's Island 2. Then I continue power increment until powerup state 211 (take about 3 hours). I enter the Top Secret Area without Yoshi. I hit the central block to get Yoshi. I then collect the key in the reserve with Yoshi and leave it underneath the two blocks containing the Flower Power. Here is the modification: I hit the second block to spawn the Flower. Now, based on what you explained, slots 11 and 10 should be occupied with the Key and the Flower. Without riding Yoshi, I then hit the first Feather block and collect it in the air. And here it worked the first time, yieilding the Keyhole in the reserve. If this setup always works, it will make performing unintended exits slightly easier. Thanks you so much for your help!! Now, with the painstakingly obtained keyhole, I will try to trigger a unintended secret exit in the Soda Lake level. Cheers!

For the PAL version, I might do some videos, but the problem is that this version came out in 1992 (two full years after the japanese release!) and a lot of glitches have been fixed, most notably the Powerup Incrementation glitch. Hi Cywil PL! I am not sure, but I think the emulated switch version should be OK. Remember though that I play the japanese SMW version. For the US version, the powerup incrementation is slighlty different. see Seth Bling's channel for more details: ru-vid.com. Thanks for the question! Cheers!

Thanks Thotho for the question! So if you trigger the normal exit (with the Orb) in the Top Secret Area, unfortunately, it is not counted as a new exit (check this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3V3Ek_P6Lok.html). Here on the contrary, triggering an unintended secret exit in the TSA yields a new exit!! But I am not sure now if this new exit is in fact another way to get an already known unintended exits... time will tell! Cheers!

Hi Kerbonauta! SMW, it turns out, is a very glitchy game. You can do a lot of thing not intended by the game designer, like here triggering a secret exit in the Top Secret Area. If you want to see more unintended stuff in smw, check out my channel. Cheers!

Hi Alessandro! I have never played SMW Advance 2. Unfortunately, I don't think that we can do the Powerup Incrementation glitch in this version of SMW... Can you do it? If so, then it could be possible in SMW Advance 2...? All the best!

Hi DUAL DV8! Like many Unintended Exits in SMW (Yoshi's House normal exit is another example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jAPiVrAU5LQ.html), the point is more to road than the destination... meaning for me the point is to be able to execute these Unintended Exits with an origina Japanese SMW Cartridge playing RTA. Hi Supeh Loigi! Yes, it is a lot of work for not so much at the end... At least I got an additional exit in the game file! Check out my other unintended exts. Some of then open unintended level in the game, like the 102nd exit (see my video:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-stPPy5wUyx8.html). All the best!

Hi KID-KRUSH! Thanks for the comment but I respectfully don't agree with you... Indeed, as you can see at the end, triggering an unintended secret exit in the Top Secret Area gives an additional event in the game file. On the contrary, if you trigger an unintended normal exit in there, it is NOT accounted in the gamefile (see my video on that exit: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Vra7GxaEGp8.html). So I guess for this later case (normal exit) you could say it is for nothing... except for fun! Cheers!

In that sense, it is similar to the unintended normal exit of Yoshi's House (see my videos on that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tBPR6649wJo.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z9MwjvXBjXA.html). Unfortunately, the unintended Top Secret Area secret exit does not open a hidden level...
