Thanks for sharing your techniques. It's important to understand that "kit cars" are not "model cars". They go together sometimes in various ways. Learning about foams, fillers, fiberglass and panelbond is eye opening for new builders. These techniques cross over to all the Smyth Kits in one way or another. Thanks for taking the time to share. We all get a little smarter, and braver to tackle the "kit car" fab.
I'm doing a Mk4 kit ,but I learned something really cool last night. My cab surround corners are all goofy and don't match nicely with the fender curve. Well, the right one is ok, it's the left side. The very bottom curve is ok So I've got some contour gauges to match the sides. Playing around with them ,I saw the error. Anyway, how am I gonna lay on filler to match the shape? Easy! Tape!! I put my filler on the low area like normal, and started putting tape over it and secured it at the areas where the shape is ok. With the tape on there during curing ,I could already tell it matched alot better. So I waited 30mins ,pulled the tape off and darn if the shape isnt 98% better already and not all lumpy from trying to drag a spreader across it. Can't say if I've seen that trick somewhere or not, maybe, but it worked great!!
