Smyth Busters: Is It Safe To Store Your Home Defense Gun Loaded?

Our intrepid Smyth Busters, Brownells Gun Techs™ Steve and Caleb, are always on duty, even on the floor of the 2022 NRA convention! They took a break during the event to answer a loaded question: Is it OK to store your home defense firearm loaded? First, let's define "loaded." It could mean either a full magazine PLUS a round in the chamber OR a full mag with NO round in the chamber. Either way, it boils down to WHO has access to the gun. If you're the only occupant of your house, or it's just you and one or more adults, that's one situation. If you have small children or if small children visit you - or even if gun-curious adults sometimes come into your house - keep that gun in a gun safe. "But, but, what if I can't get to it fast enough in an emergency?" There are excellent quick-access gun safes available. Don't risk that gun ending up in the wrong hands! Caleb has three boys at home, and he explains how he stores his home-defense gun.
Bottom line: Make sure your home-defense gun can be accessed ONLY by you or authorized adults. If it's properly secured, you CAN store it loaded (in either condition).
For more on this topic, watch our earlier Smyth Busters video, "Should You Lock Up Your Home Defense Gun?"

Guns are inanimate. You can store a gun loaded for 100yrs and it’s not going to shoot itself. They’re right. The question is how responsible is your household.
@mcdon2401
@mcdon2401 2 года назад
Exactly this. I was brought up around guns and knew to respect them, we never needed to keep anything locked up. When I moved in with my now ex, I quickly learned that her son was not to be trusted with anything more than a blunt crayon, and he was in his late teens at that point. Know the people who are in your house and plan for the more likely scenarios.

I heard that in case there was a fire, the hot temperature would cause a gun with a round in the chamber to shoot accidentally. So for the safety of the firefighters in the case there is a fire, I would argue that except the designated defense guns you can carry out of the house immediately when it happens, all other guns should not have a round in the chamber.

My wife and I are empty nester's and we store our defense guns loaded and attached to the wall by our bed, by the front door, and by the back door, (yes we have multiple guns and live in the boonies). That part about, "we allow our guests to carry their weapons" just kinda rubs me the wrong way. Why thank you, your Highness, for allowing me to exercise my constitutional rights. If a friend of mine doesn't want my gun in their house, they don't want ME in their house, and aren't going to be a friend of mine any longer. I don't associate with people who seek to control others in such ways. Sure, it's their private property, they can make whatever crap-tastic rules they want, but they will not have the pleasure of my company if they do so.

My kids, starting at about 6 or 7 yrs old, were trained, by me, to safely handle handguns and rifles. They all started shooting by the 1st grade and were closely supervised, by me. This took the novelty and curiosity out of the firearm. Starting the same process with grandchildren now. The whole family shoots regularly. Safety is tantamount. Safeties are always ''on'', even in the storage safe and unloaded. Trigger fingers are policed as is muzzle discipline. Never had a single accident.

For long guns, I would not keep the bolt locked back. Mag full is fine. Most long guns are not drop safe and the bolt can drop if the gun is knocked over, thus chambering a round and potentially causing an accidental discharge.

@@sean6.6 if a fire happens you will not have time to get anything out of a safe. The long guns are set up with no round in the chamber as the all point at an exterior wall, the hand guns point into the floor. The only round that can possibly cause harm when the cook off is a round in a closed and locked chamber. Loose rounds while they will make noise have no ballistic power. I have experienced this. When I was much younger my little brother placed 30-06 rounds in the entire families baseboard heaters because that would help keep the family safe. That is how the mind of a 2 year old works. He got the idea the night the family returned from a week long hunting/camping trip. After the family had gone to bed he found used a kitchen ladder to retrieve the box of rounds from the top of the fridge and proceeded to place them in all the heaters around the house. A few hours later the started going off. Bent the crap out of the heater fins but did not put a dent in any of the heaters cases. Nice little bang with no power.

AGREE! In some locals you don’t have options, laws may require that they are locked up at all times, especially where children reside. However, my children are grown, only adults live in my home, some one is almost always home… I can store mine loaded, chambered, & leaning on the nightstand ready to go. EXCEPT, when no one is home… if it’s not my carry that goes with me then it needs to be secured, (always loaded, chambered, but secured).

The personal pistol is locked in a quick access safe in the home. More because I don’t want it stolen in a burglary. If I’m out, it’s usually on my person. But sometimes weapons are “not allowed” in an area I’m visiting. Even for LEOs. 4. I would never associate with people (and have them over) who know nothing about guns.😆

I've got a buddy who carries it in his normal EDC holster at his house. Only reason I know is I saw him print. That's gotta be the safest way to do it. You have control of the weapon at all times and it's always close by if you need it. Not as comfortable but a safe is not a holster.

A friend who is now a retired Texas Highway Patrol was consulted by myself and my wife about guns in the house with kids. His perspective was that you absolutely can have loaded weapons in the house, not locked in a safe, and life safely with your children. He said as a Trooper, he needed to be able to leave the house at a moment's notice, day or night, with his loaded service weapon loaded and ready for action. Unloading the gun everytime he came home, or locking it in a safe was not a viable option. Now of course, he was raising kids 20 years ago, so there weren't all of the fancy options we now have for biometric scanning safes and such available to the average person for reasonable prices.

what are the main causes of negligent discharges? guns have long been fit with safeties and for good reason. keeping the gun ready to fire is inviting the negligent discharge. a DA auto with a thumb safety is a good idea. personally I prefer C3. I live alone, so my home defense and EDC guns always sit somewhat in the open but behind concealment, with fully loaded mags but empty chambers. If I had kids, I'd create secret compartments in the walls to stage a few guns. They'd be out of the reach of the kids and preferably covered by framed photos or the like, at least until the kids are old enough to understand they're never to touch them. Then as they get even older, I'd train them and permit them to access the stashed guns if there's ever a need. Kids can handle a lot more responsibility than many adults think.

My comment is for those who live alone and DON'T have alot of traffic going through their home. IMO, I keep my gun nearby at all times. During the day, when I'm working (I work from home), I keep it in a case. At night, I keep it in my computer drawer, and when I go to sleep, on my night stand. I always keep a magazine in my gun, but not with a chambered round. I can rack the slide quickly enough that I don't think the extra risk of a misfire (if I drop the gun for example) is worth it. I always find it interesting when people talk about someone breaking into your house like it's a quiet and quick thing to do. It should not be quiet or quick. Secure your doors and windows, upgrade your locks and doors. Get a dog. Now you will have tons of notice of any evil doers and while they're struggling to break in you have plenty of time to prep

Right? They are willing to spend ten of thousands on more guns then they can hold, won't even bother spending any more then a grand on a good lock, good alarm system, or good video security system. One to two guns in tandem with those systems will be MUCH more effective then 100 guns without those systems.

Wife’s in her side table drawer, mines in mine. Shotgun between the footboard and mattress. And drawers in coffee table in front room and in the cars, all with one in the pipe. My kids handled the guns and learned to shoot at eight. By thirteen theirs was in their rooms.

I agree you should store your guns based on who has access. I would add a simple solution to locking them up Is an exterior door & an electronic deadbolt on a closet. 👍👍

I’m hesitant to keep mine loaded but that’s only because I’m not certain that my apartment is totally secure. Sometimes I’ll come home and a door will be different than I think I left it. Once I change the locks and take other basic security precautions then I’ll bring it out of the safe.

I am just one man with one son; thus I can only relate our unique and individual storage doctrine - everything is condition-1 throughout the house because a firearm without a mag is a paperweight. My 12-year-old has been trained on every pew I own (even the M82) since he was 7 in order to remove the ‘curiosity factor’. It worked well for us, but we know this is not the model for everyone and that is fine - freedom is individuality. None of our firearms are locked up because good quality firearm racks are $800 each (and only store 12 rifles each - too expensive when you need five of them) and we be po yo so no go.

I can only speak for myself, and being raised around guns all my life & my dad being one of the nations better /best trapshooters from the 1960 to well into the 90’s before he started slipping. But I don’t ever remember even looking at the guns with curiosity until I was 10 or so & I was being showed the guns by either dad or grandpa. The same with my kids. I think that because they where either around them sense birth that it’s just part of life, like a couch, or car. I’m now have grandkids who don’t give any gun a second glance & just a waste of time to play with that stuff.

I don't have any children but I believe in having a round in the chamber. But for people who have children, I agree that the firearm should be stored in a safe or lock box whether it has a round in the chamber or not. Keep up the good video's. I have to M1911's & a 9mm pistols stored around the house so I can get to them quickly along with my AR-15.

I could go either way on this. I leave a magazine in. But I don’t leave one in the chamber. Racking my slide takes no time at all. No wrong answer to me, everybody should do what they are most comfortable with. Safe storage is also a very good 👍🏻 way to go

I've lived through a few things. You might only have one arm available. Can you rack your slide with one hand under stress while in a compromised position as fast as necessary to save yourself? Just leave one in the chamber and always know that from now on. You'll be safer knowing it is ready to go

One could argue that it’s unsafe to try to defend yourself with an unloaded gun.
@posthawk1393
@posthawk1393 Год назад
One could also argue it takes a split second to rack the slide on a pistol, and a second to load a magazine (if you want to go another step away from being loaded). Also, one could argue that with the number of people killed accidentally by firearms, we should be a little safer with our guns.
@CaspersCave
@CaspersCave 2 года назад
It depends on the weapon. Since shotguns are typically not drop safe, it makes sense to store those without a round in the chamber (Cruiser Ready) and only rack the slide when needed. There should be no issues with modern pistols, revolvers or rifles 🇺🇸

For immediate access in any situation: Best solution is to strap it on your person. Second best is within arms reach. Third choise is locked up. If it is not strapped on your person or locked up then keep the magazine on your person and the chamber empty.

This is happening in PA. Here is what is coming up for a vote on Monday at 10 AM: HB 699 (Fitzgerald): A mandatory "safe storage" law that would require all gun owners to lock up their firearms. HB 770 (Gainey): A so-called "assault weapons" ban that would outlaw numerous semi-automatic firearms. HB 1538 (Frankel): A bill that would end the statewide firearms preemption law, allowing cities like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia to pass their own gun control ordinances, turning PA into a patchwork quilt of gun control laws. HB 1903 (Stephens): "Red Flag" Gun Confiscation Order bill that tramples on the due process rights of all gun owners.

luckily(and happily) its only me and my cat Sparky in the household. I keep my H&K VP9 bedside full magazine inserted but no round in the chamber. That seems like too great a risk if a moment comes, in total darkness, not fully awake, reaching out to grab hold of and potentially contacting and pulling on the trigger with my fingers as I try to grip the gun properly

In a recent video from USCCA, they advocated storing your firearm in a safe with no round in the chamber. Their rationale was that if your house caught on fire the heat would cause that firearm to discharge and you don’t know where the bullet would go. I think the risk of this event is rather low and they lost creditably with me for advocating such a position.
@jamesp739
@jamesp739 6 месяцев назад
To use your words, "While the risk of this event is rather low"...you may be correct, but the consequences are rather high. It is indeed a risk to firefighters and anyone else who may be in the area. A "cook off" round has the same or nearly the same velocity as a round where the trigger is pulled. Store your home defense gun as you will, but in my opinion it is much safer to store it with an empty chamber. When needed, it only takes a moment to chamber a round. To those who say it takes too much time to chamber a round, I say if that's so, you probably have some serious gaps in your over-all home safety/home defense plan and system.

I prefer taking the advice from Bill Burrs wife, I store the magazine for my home defense pistol in the garage, ammo in the guest bedroom, the slide in the bathroom toilet, the barrel in the trunk of my car, the main spring in my cats bed, and the frame by my bed. When I need it I just run around collecting the parts in a scavenger hunt.

Anything I’m carrying is locked in a safe , that’s my 1st part. My most practiced & reliable I choose for home defense is a revolver, it has one chambered for me allready!!! My wife’s go to is a shotgun with the chamber empty, she wanted the noise of racking it for warning ( it’s a nice thought). Knowing without a doubt how it’s staged is just as important as if you keep one chambered. **Side note** I’m not sure why I’ve always been more comfortable with a round chambered with a revolver, but that’s my comfort level

My EDC pistol is always fully loaded. When it's not in my physical possession, it is secured as I have a 5-year old granddaughter living with me. She is as well trained in gun safety as a little kid can be, but ... My shotgun is loaded, empty chamber, but secured.. My AR is generally not loaded at all, but there are loaded magazines immediately available. all secured. I have other firearms, but they are not loaded and are kept secured. When I lived alone, my AR was always fully loaded, as was my shotgun.
