In this episode of SmythBusters, Stephen and Caleb, tackle the debate on whether a handgun really needs a light attachment. The episode provides insights and practical experiments to help viewers understand the functionality and necessity of gun-mounted lights.
Here's what we cover:
The Myth Debunked: We challenge the common claim that weapon lights are unnecessary. We demonstrate that modern lights, such as the Surefire Turbo, can illuminate an entire room effectively without needing to directly point the firearm at a target.
Utility and Safety: The episode explores how using a weapon light can increase safety in a home defense scenario by allowing the gun owner to maintain situational awareness without directly aiming at a potential threat. This is shown through practical demonstrations using indirect lighting.
Handling and Efficiency: We discuss the advantages of two-handed shooting with a light-equipped handgun, emphasizing better control and accuracy compared to one-handed shooting while holding a separate flashlight.
Personal Preference and Situational Considerations: The conclusion drawn is that while handgun lights may not be necessary for every individual or scenario, they provide significant advantages in many situations, particularly for home defense.
The episode encourages viewers to consider their own needs and scenarios to decide if a handgun light is right for them. It underscores that while some prefer the simplicity of a light-free handgun, others may benefit from the added functionality and security that a light provides.
Feel free to share your thoughts or experiences regarding handgun lights in the comments below. For more insights and tips on firearm handling and accessories, remember to subscribe to the Brownells channel.

Half my career in LE had no WML. The other half I carried a WML. 34 years total of pointing guns at bad guys, clearing rooms, houses, garages, storage facilities, buildings, RV’s, offices, shops, retail warehouses etc… and I will say, the WML is an advantage…. But it’s NOT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY as long as you have a handheld light for the other hand. For the average citizen who just has a light for his/her nightstand gun and meh…. It’s not a bad idea, but that’s exactly what people take it as when someone says “you don’t need one”. I’ve yet to hear anyone say that you should not put one on your weapon, only that they are over emphasized and not really necessary. For those living in blacked out dungeons and can’t see after dark anyway a night light probably is a must, for those with light sources around like street or yard lights and have decent night vision it just may not seem necessary. People say ignorant stuff about using a light. They could learn a lot by just testing their theories in their home at night with a flashlight. At the range, they can use a handheld flashlight to point at their target and shoot one handed. They will see that it's not easy. Too many people speak on the topic without putting much thought into to it and with no experience whatsoever. Taking a low light class would quickly clear up a lot of assumptions.
@deejayimm
@deejayimm Месяц назад
Binding your light to your gun is stupid if you are a civilian in public. Unless you are gonna carry two lights, which is even more stupid. Acting like you have to shoot one handed if you don't have a felony-waiting-to-happen on your gun, is a call of duty mindset. Practice something called the Harries method. You can still use your light like normal, without catching a felony, as you can point the gun and light in separate directions.. If not for lawyers, a weapon mounted light makes lots of sense.

Firearm Safety Rule #4: Always Be Sure of Your Target and What’s Beyond It. It's up to you whether or not you can follow that rule without a weapon-mounted light.
@terrarecon
@terrarecon Месяц назад
I'm a former LEO. Let me tell you first and foremost. Yes, you should have a light on your firearm. I say this for a couple of reasons of personal experience. NOT LEGAL ADIVCE. 1.) You are not required to use a WML, it's situational. 2.) You can still carry a handheld light despite having a WML. 3.) The idea that WML use will cause you to flag unintended targets shows training is required. WML do not have to be pointed at someone to illuminate an area. (Brandishing laws are state specific, in and out of your home may have different legal components, check your local laws and consult an attorney) 4.) You cannot account for the unknown. Again, hand-held versus WML is situational and requires training for both scenarios. You will not know when you need a WML versus just a hand-held. Take what you personally find good from everyone you come across and discard the rest. Focus ONLY on what you find useful and legal. After that it's just junk mail taking up your time.

Before I got weapon lights for my home defense pistols, I trained the "Resident Evil 4 Leon S. Kennedy method" of holding a flashlight in my weak hand, beam end by your pinky, clicker end by your thumb, then crossing my weak hand under my strong hand crossing my wrists, using my weak hand wrist to support my strong hand wrist. In this position, the flashlight beam points forward, and gives your gun hand steadying support. It's not going to give any recoil mitigation, so you still need to practice shooting strong hand only, but it definitely helps with the arm wobble. No idea if this is an actual tactic used by LEO / military, but I found it quite effective.
@Woodstockblues1

It IS a LEO/military tactic, and that's where I learned it. I've found this to be virtually as good as having a WML. Bonus is that my carry pistol and home pistol are one and the same. And this technique allows me to rotate pistols seasonally. Smaller pistol for Summer carry, larger pistol for Winter carry. Same flashlight/technique for both. Not to mention that this is just about the only technique that works for revolvers. Again, it works with ANY pistol in your strong hand. Hence, a weapon mounted light is the best setup. 3) Lights that protrude past the muzzle help to prevent out-of-battery malfunctions when pressed against a door, wall, torso, or what have you. 4) added weight reduces vertical recoil. 5) they look cool.

Even if I had a weapon mounted light, I'd still need another light to not point my gun at something I didnt want to. My home defense rifle/pistols do have lights. Caleb addresses almost all of what your comment contains and you still decided to type and post it. For regular carry, having a WML on your CCW is a great idea and doesn't limit your ability to carry a separate hand-held light, you understand that, right? I carry an FN 509 MRD with a TLR-1 and an RMR and I have a separate light on my person for work/random EDC. The TLR extends past the barrel and slide by about an inch so it is uncomfortable, but there is no shortage of lights that fit flush with the muzzle that add no more bulk than the gun itself. The whole "light-bearing holsters are less safe" BS you were spewing is completely false. Unless you're buying shit holsters (which exist for either set-up), the trigger will be covered the same. Streamlight TLR 7a has been on all three of my most recent handguns - carry guns all. I know that I am not capable enough shooting single-handed (and is on the agenda to work on), but I don't want an additional something in that off-hand that I have to keep track of. I know that if I set something down, I loose track of it unless it's in the exact same place, every time (and even sometimes then) - and with my luck, I'd not find the flashlight during a home invasion. For day to day carry, I just turn back to my stint in the Army - you fight the way you train, so train the way you expect to have to fight. If I take the light off and put the light on, based on whether I'm carrying concealed or not, I'm not maintaining a steady, predicatable mass for the pistol, which means even mere fractions of a second of adjusting in an already bad situation. Plus, much of my time out of the house is in low light - as summer comes up, the sun is rising earlier, but I still have days when I leave earlier and during fall, winter, and spring to and from the car may be in the dark, or in dim lighting - when I may have hands full of other things. If I have to drop everything in my offhand, fumble for a flashlight, and draw/aim all at once, those are additional actions that can cost my life. Better to just drop everything and have the flashlight already in hand as off and dominant hands meet. And yes, absolutely, on splash-lume with a modern WML - with the one on my shotgun, I can illuminate a little over 2/3 an acre in the backyard. The TLR7a isn't quite that hot, but I can see more than enough to adjust to a threat as needed - and still have a hand free to open or close access a door or gate.

I respect those who caution against weapons mounted lights, and take Massad Ayoob’s warning about searching with a weapons mounted light seriously. However, it took Tactical Rifleman’s Combat Pistol 101’s night shoot where you shot both holding a flashlight using multiple techniques and then shooting with a weapons mounted light to convince me that a weapons mounted light was absolutely necessary. The high A zone hit tally between the two is eye opening to say the least. More eye opening is the high number of misses even among experienced shooters when shooting while trying to hold a flashlight.

Couple of things with the handgun mounted light. First, there is the argument that the light identifies you as a target and an aiming point. If you are facing multiple aggressors, the HML might become a problem. Your point about lighting up the room is a good one and I would agree; up to a point. The main factor is being able to identify your potential target. You don't want to shoot an innocent family member etc. ALWAYS know what the target is! One other thing is, if you're home/place of business etc. is vulnerable to break-ins it might be to your advantage to harden the place against unwanted intrusion. Alarm system, giant hungry dog, Griffon on the roof; something to assuage someone from trying to enter without being invited.

1. No, you don't have to point the light at someone/something to identify, but people tend to do exactly that under stress unless they train carefully not to. 2. Point 1 comes into play in significant measure because firing the gun while trying to use the light happens far more than people expect. An NYPD ESU member just fired his pistol accidentally while clearing a building during the protests at Columbia a couple of weeks ago. To think it doesn't happen or won't happen to you shows a poor understanding of human performance and error reduction. 3. I'm actually aware of half a dozen cases where someone caught felony charges for using a light attached to a handgun. Bad decision making was certainly applicable in every single one of those cases, but had that person made a bad decision with just a flashlight there wouldn't have been any criminal or civil liability. The world is different when the light you are trying to use is attached to a deadly weapon. If you aren't factoring that into your decision making and training, you're inviting disaster. 4. You should put deliberate effort into shooting proficiently with one hand because it's a good idea in general as you won't always have two hands functioning. It's useful for running a hand held light, but people who know what they're doing have been teaching one handed work for a very long time because it's just a good idea.

As a civilian you will overwhelmingly likely never find yourself "clearing rooms, houses, garages, storage facilities, buildings, RV’s, offices, shops, retail warehouses etc…". That fantasy where you are going to do room clearing drills in your own home in the middle of the night looking for burglars is just that, a fantasy. And, it's hard to justify you felt threatened when you are the aggressor. You are defending your home, not invading someone else's. And, by the way, bad guys who come in your home need to see, too. Burglars and home invaders generally don't bring night vision goggles. They will bring their own light, and nicely illuminate themselves, making them a easier target, and easier to tell where they are. I don't need to bring one and warn them I'm coming. Although I probably will bring a flashlight just in case. But that doesn't require a hot sh-t expensive WML hanging of the end of my gun. But, I understand, cool sh-t, cool toys. And you need to justify dropping a wad of cash on this cool toy. Really, I understand. To me, its kind of like people who insist they need a spoiler for their car, and its not just for looks, i.e. they look cool. I EDC a WML and I have them on all my home defense guns. There aren’t a lot of good reasons not to. Besides the illumination, there’s also the advantage that WMLs help reduce recoil because of the weight.

I don’t like a light on my handgun either. What I did for nighttime home defense is got a small flashlight with a clip put it on the brim of a hat and put it on my nightstand. Illuminates whatever I’m looking at even if my weapon is holstered, low ready etc.

"advantage of temporarily blinding someone" first thing I found when I turned on a flashlight in my house is every window I pointed it at dazzled me leaving a streak in my vision. Also all the large glass framed photographs, the TV, all reflective. It's surprising how many reflective surfaces there are in a typical home. It's a fair point you can illuminate the whole room pointing the gun at the ceiling or floor but then you could just turn on the lights in your house if your aim is to illuminate the whole room. This is the problem I found when I started carrying a flashlight regularly, I was finding excuses not to use the lighting fixtures in my house just as an excuse to use my flashlight. As to the "i had this thing on my gun, and when I pointed by gun at them they ran away" well was that due to the laser pointer, the flashlight, or whatever or... because it was a gun?

There are different brightness of lights. If it is blinding get a lower lumens model. 300 lumens is probably the brightest that should be used indoors. As far as lighting up a room, it would depend on where exactly the light switch is. Not all houses have well located light switches. I don't see a disadvantage of having a light on a home defense weapon regardless, but may not be necessary.

@@carsonfranks3138 Well that's to address the idea of having a light so bright that it is blinding. If you just need enough light to illuminate and not blind then you can just clip a pen light to the strap of your wristwatch. I'm just very wary of getting distracted by the idea of a blinding beam when that wasn't the actual goal, the goal was better vision of your surroundings.

I train to use a hand-held light and shoot one handed...but I have the wml if: I need to use 2 hands. Something happens or I can't get to my hand-held. I had a shooting group that once a year after the fall time change we would have a night shoot. And we would practice the varying techniques, then we would setup a "steel challenge" where we would take 2 saw horses with 6 small freestanding steel targets each, and we would challenge each other with certain restrictions like starting from an empty gun, or 10 push-ups first, etc and whomever knocked down all 6 steels first won. Having wmls was a cheat code against someone that was using a hand-held.

I agree with you, however, pointing a strong light at someone illuminates both you and the other person. Pointing the light at the threat all but blinds them and gives you an advantage. This is the advantage I see with a handheld. I will always have a weapon mounted light in addition to a handheld light. Thank you for the great vids.

My recent school of thought after having lights on all handguns, after getting some cc only handguns, was that all handguns for home defense need lights, smaller framed guns for outside don’t need lights. Just the likelihood of needing one and not having it is very unlikely. Odds are i will not use it in any encounter outside the home. I’m not going down dark alleys very often.

Obviously it’s better to have one usually, but it’s more about the best value.

For inside the house, I have the grand idea. It's called turning on a light switch for the house.

Home defense, you really need to have a light. If your CCW doubles as your HD gun, use a light. But for a CCW-only gun, I've never seen or heard of a situation where there is enough light that I can be targeted but not enough light for me to see who is mugging/assaulting me.

Just this week I bought a new pistol and bought a TLR8 for that bad boy. If I’m going to use a light, I might has well see exactly where my bore is aiming too. Laser and light also makes it super easy for a non trained family member to use as a home defense gun. A 90 year old grandma could be taught how to put the laser on a target and pull a trigger. She doesn’t need to know how to hold a flashlight and gun at the same time or how to get a sight picture and line up the posts

I have weapon lights, but Hackathorn has forgotten more than most people know about training and firearms, but old habits die hard.

While I don't see the need to spend hundreds of dollars to put a solar flare with expensive, obscure batteries on my pistol, I do like weapon lights. For $39 you can get a CVLife rechargeable pistol light that has quick release and pulse features. Extremely bright and recharges in 2 hours with magnetic connector. Build quality is great for the price. I've bought two so far, and have probably made them 10 more sales by showing them to friends.

It's not just about illuminating the room or illuminating the target, it's about blinding the target. Day or night, we use weapon lights in LE and on our tactical teams. A weapon light is a requirement for us, from years and years of experience. Yes, you should still have a hand held light for many obvious reasons, but a weapon light is awesome.

I'm a firm believer in 3 lights. A good pen light (backup) (stylus pro). A 1x or 2x CR123a pocket tac-light, and a weapon light. Need a weapon light to keep the threat illuminated, and a hand light to make sure you're not being flanked by the threat's friends.

The context the original “don’t need one” was in the EDC arena. Most people go to a HD to justify one. Two totally different scenarios. 1. When do you carry and need it. Most people carry during the day or in well light areas. Is it something you need to worry about ? Just think about where you go when you carry. 2. Drawing your pistol in many jurisdiction is the same as pointing at someone. So pointing it at the ground to illuminate someone is the same as pointing at them. 3. Blinding them! Take a light, close your eyes then point the light at your eyes. Then lower it an inch or so. You can open your eyes. Imagine where you are aimed at while the light (below the bore axis) is in their eyes. 4. Finding a holster that fits your light. The more expensive ones is easier, but the less expensive not so much. Now that people are mad- If you like a light carry it. But don’t think if you don’t you’re doing it wrong. All my HD guns have a light. My carry guns, one has a light, one doesn’t and one can’t.

WML also allows stand-off distance when pressed against a barrier (or mofo) so as not to bump slide out of battery unintentionally.

For me I don't have a needmfor a weapon mounted light, but that's situational. I have a bunch of motion activated night lights (battery operated), just to make navigating the house at night safer. Any intruders will self illuminate and I can hide in the shadows and maintain a tactical advantage while waiting on the cops. Police in my area have a quick response time.

I'm not sure if I want a light on my carry gun, but I absolutely do want one on my home defense gun. But I also subscribe to "better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it", so for that reason alone I will probably put a slim weapon light on my carry pistol.
