26:31 yes Penelope and Odysseus were made for each other. Red doesn't go into it as much cause "summary" but the entire time Odysseus is lost at sea, Penelope is pulling trick after trick to get out of being forced to remarry.
So about the Odysseus and dog age thing -The Trojen war and Odyssy last 10 years each ( total 20) - Odysseus was in his early 20's when he left for Troy, so his around 40 when he finally gets back. So he is NOT an old man when he gets back. Most people died young and anchant times, they didnt have shorter lifespan. -24:20 As for Argos. Dogs in ideal curcamstances have been known to live above 20, and a handfull were even pushed 30. So Argos here is preaty much 100+ years old, and survining in filth and neglect through shear willpower.
And it's touching because 1, dogs are known to wait for their owners when they're gone, especially ones who are off to war, and 2, the wait was worth it because he got to see Odysseus one more time before passing away.

Also fun fact, I actually read the Odyssy (well, a prose version of the story) when I was young. I was familiar with most of the big scenes from the story through pop culture and movies, so I though I knew what I was getting myself into. I was not prepared when this scene come out of nowhere and made me bawl my eyes out. Nothing else in the book got me anywhere near as emotional as that moment, and I'm genuinely surprised that this part of the story had never been adapted in anything

When I said "most people died young in anchant times", that WAS refearing to early childhood mortality, deseases, wars, enviromental hazards, and other factors that skewed the avarage life span so low in anchant times. Most people DID die well before they reached 40 years of age, but like I said, that nothing to do with different lifespans. We boath made it a point to clear up the exact same misconception. So, the solid snake joke started in The Iliad summarized, which was the first drawn episode Red did. You've reacted to the Trojan War oversimplified, which encompasses the larger story of the war, rather than just the Iliad.

It's a matter of much debate over if and when Penelope recognized Odysseus. It's not clear whether or not she suspected him when he was disguised as a beggar. Also, even after he revealed himself she didn't accept that it was really him until she tricked him into saying something only her husband would know (which for some reason was cut out of this synopsis), because other people had tried to trick her into thinking that they were him.

Penelope told him that the bed had been moved from the room, and he freaked out about someone cutting the tree and moving the bed. Only they knew that the bed was rooted, so that's how she knew for sure that it really was Odysseus.

Well, FGO DID have some Odyssey, specifically through Circe, although she really focused more on Medea being her niece than her meeting with Odysseus... until we actually got Odysseus. Anyways, about Odysseus' faithfullness... there's a few stories that build on him NOT being faithful. There's one in particular where, iirc, he has a son with Circe who meets Odysseus' fresh widow Penelope, hooks up with her, and then they meet Circe and Odysseus' son hooks up with Circe... FGO luckily completely ignored that one because the entire event that added Odysseus was about Circe finally properly processing her unrequited love. Also I'm pretty sure there's a few tellings where he had a kid with Calypso... As for Helen of Troy surviving... yeah, makes sense she would, after all the whole Trojan war was about getting her back, would've defeated the purpose if they went to take her back and then just massacred her with the entire rest of Troy. On the topic of Scylla, while Red described her as... not too good looking, her name seem to actually be relatively commonly used for Octopus-girls, the mermaid-like kind... which is also how Red kinda drew her. So... there DEFINITELY are people that would've been into her. And yeah, Odysseus would've already been quite old at that point. ACHILLES was a teen when he was enlisted for the Trojan war, and Odysseus was the one who went to get him. Odysseus' son was also just born at that point, so... gonna guess he was like 30 at that point... and at the point where he gets back to Ithaca, his son is 20, so Odysseus has gotta be in his 50s at that point... which for the standards back then would've DEFINITELY been old. (fittingly, Odysseus in FGO is also summoned as an older-looking man with mostly silver hair) Also yeah, that would've been the first time Odysseus' son saw him... To get into the weird Fate-facts about Odysseus, appearently the writers thought that Odysseus was SUCH a looker that they could believably give him the Aegis, given to him by Athena in form of a super cool mech-suit (with a conspicuous chest-window...) and she appearently gave it to him because she ALSO wanted a piece of his cake... also the Trojan Horse in Fate could actually transform into a super cool Gundam, because the writers just seem to love mecha.
In the original text Odysseus was absolutely sleeping with Calypso while he was on her island. There's no ambiguity in the text. He says they went to bed together.
Later traditions in antiquity also very much say Circe and Odysseus had a child - Telegonos (there are also others, like Agrius and Latinus mentioned in some sources). In some tales from antiquity Telogonos marries Penelope after Odysseus deatha nd Telemachus marries Circe.

In all tellings (including some pottery that I think predates our textual tellings), this eventually results in Ajax diving stomach first onto his own sword, but in some tellings this is after he kills all the Greeks’ cattle in a fit of rage (sometimes as a result of divine-induced madness, though in a few tellings he was actually trying to kill the council and was placed under an illusion to see the cattle as them).

You should check out the songs from “Epic” the musical. It’s more modern rock style music and portrays the story around how Odysseus should have been more ruthless on his journey and revolves around the one song line “ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves”.

@@estela_mobba5394 you should check out the “Epic” song animatics on RU-vid. That’s how I found out about the songs and the musical in general, and a lot of them are REALLY COOL. I’m not sure if you know what animatics are but they are amateur penciled animations that are more like storyboards. If you ever looked at the deleted scenes of some animated movies on dvd (no jokes about my age please) they are done that way, jerky motion and all.
I just realized how weird it was for Zeus to not turn Odysseus' home into a slaughterhouse and can only assume that the suitors used some hospitality loophole to not get smote.

The Odyssey mini-series from Hallmark (1997) was quite good with Armand Asante in the lead role. This is some of Red's earliest art for the channel. At one point I seem to recall her saying that she was doing the drawing in a sketchbook and then scanning it in for the videos whereas these days she's doing it all on the computer. She started doing this with the Iliad because, unlike with previous works, she couldn't find any good video clips to work with besides Troy.
This was the second video she animated. The Illiad (or Troy Story) was the first one. I recommend checking it out. Also, the Shakespeare stuff is mostly from when the beginning of the channel, like before Blue joined, and at least a few (probably) date to back when the channel was called "Red Eyes, Take Warning" which is where Red's name comes from (I don't know for sure because I started watching OSP back like when Red covered Eros and Psyche, which was long after Blue joined).
To be fair to the Ancient Greeks and their morality: People often seem to forget that this was about 800 years, and they were highly fragmented into dozens of City-States that typically hated each other's guts except when someone decided to invade from outside. As such, views on thing such as marriage varied wildly, sometimes even within one lifetime (Yes, Plato did say something about Male on male romantic relationships being the purest form of love...or at least something similar. Those who tend to bring this up also tend to leave out that he later wrote something to the effect than anyone involved in such a relationship was to be shunned...Just as an example). As such, it is entirely possible that when and where this version of the Odyssey was written, monogamous relationships were considered the norm.
Goldfish actually have a lifespan of 10-15 years when properly cared for, with the record being 30 years, so the same goldfish for a decade isn’t too weird!

If it makes you feel better, celtic mythology has 2 guys who swap places that become good freinds because they could keep it in their pants. Arwen, if i remember how to spell it. Its weird how many death gods are just the most chill and loving gods despite what most depictions of death there are.
You still need to watch/react to the other parts of Dante's Divine comedy: Purgatorio and Paradiso. They are totally worth it, they are old videos of Red as well and they are kindda required to watch the College Hell video.
Response to 27:20: Out of all the weapons I ever seen from greece or rome, I never hear anything about axes. Weird even more conisdering ancient egypt, north europe and the middle east have these weapons and would do trade. Also wood cutting. I never picture someone from greece, athens or rome with an axe.

The Trojan War took 10 years, so that dog held on for two decades - by sheer force of will, only to die after seeing him one last time! Best part in the mini-series with Armand Assante (I highly recommend, it is awesome!) was when the wife and servants all closed the doors to keep the suitors in the room with Odysseus and Telemachus... and a good time was had by all (you know, except the suitors)!

And in a lot of retelling, he does it with Calypso too; he doesn't so much miss his wife as his home and his place as king. Second, you gotta stop it with this weird pseudo-conspiracy theorist Protestant thing of "The Church coming in and modifying history". Stories like the Odyssey get transcribed and modified slowly with copies of copies, and some medieval Byzantine scholars, who happened to be Christian (Orthodox though) may have altered some passages (don't know though), but every culture does that. It's not a secret Vatican cabal telling them to change the history, just people with certain beliefs due to their education as priests thinking "okay contemporary audiences aren't going to get it so might as well tweak the story a little". Third, that's an interesting point about morals and views on marriage changing, but I'm pretty sure being in love with your wife wasn't universally regarded as weird. A lot of philosophers in Greco-Roman times probably developed the idea that marrying someone you loved was succumbing to your passions instead of marrying rationally the best economic and political match for you or something, but it probably wasn't everybody.
Well it kind of helps when he's also recruiting party members as well as a Fire Emblem protagonist!
