Snap-on -VS- Snap-on ( MG725 -VS- PT850 ) 1/2" Impact Wrenches ( MADE IN USA ) 

I have had my 725 for 9 years & it has been daily used in a commercial repair shop, dropped, not oiled daily, just used like a w.,., and put away. Hands down a legendary impact! I bought an 850 used it once and sold it.

Well that saved me a lot of money. Guess Im not getting rid of the mg725

I don't understand some peoples interpretation of the video.. the mg725 is a half inch beast. it's a boss in the shop and it sounds like a Ferrari when the muffler is not installed. If your a Kia kind of guy that's fine, you get what you pay for.

Just bought the 850. It's very impressive. Feels real nice in my hand and I think you can control the power easier unless all out power is more important to you.

I have the PT850 and it has worked great for me. I had a choice between the 2 you tested and I got the PT850 because it was slightly smaller and lighter. Sometimes that is a huge help when working on ball joints or control arms.

I have the 75th anniversary MG725 since 2009 and has never failed me. I was pondering the PT850 since its a little lighter and shorter nose to get in tight places but see no reason to get a tool that may be lighter and more compact but no more power. Now the flip side is that power is pretty negligible if your in a shop as I will go to 3/4 or breaker bar on anything my MG725 can't remove but to date, I have done that maybe once on a Legend crank that was borderline sized. Snap on dealer recomended mg725. Glad i took his advice.

So I got into an argument with my shop foreman today over these two impacts. I own a 725 and he the 850. Well any ways his gun was not touching this bolt, would not spin it off. Put his 850 down and grabbed my 725 and he said that his gun had more power I said nope. He called bull. I hooked my gun up and zip... off came the bolt. So I don't care if the 850 is comfier... easier to use... I will not trade my 725 for a 850. Oh and my 725 is 3 years old and the 850 is like 7 months.

Honestly have had the pt850 for about 2 years use it on a daily only had to send it once after about 5 months my gun became stuck in reverse but snap on quickly fixed it and ever since then works great very very rarely do I find a bolt that I cant get lose with the 850 the guys at my shop come grab my 850 when they cant get something lose and it takes it out like it was nothing never touched a 725 so cant say anything about it but if your using the gun all day and if your smaller I would highly recommend this little gun its very comfortable and I'm the smallest guy in the shop and some of the biggest guys use my gun and it works for them

can a 5 CFM air compressor work for the Snap-On MG725 ?

Old bull for the win, great video. Please do a torque test with a Milwaukee M18 fuel Impact with the 9.0 battery. They claim more torque but we would love to know exactly how much.

I had the 725 that I traded in towards Matcos MT2769 basically a composite IR gun. It worked decent but after about two years the power dropped off quite a bit even after sending it in to be rebuilt. I then traded that in to snap on for the new 850, 2 years now it’s still going strong and regardless of the tests it seems to out perform the 725 in the shop in my opinion.

I just got the new version I had the other one for years and I send it out for repair it going to take about 2 or 3 weeks and I didn’t want to wait with out impact and I decide to buy the new one thinking it was stronger than the old one .I glad send that one to snap on to get fix and I will keep it Great video !!

when i became a mechanic back in 97. I bought a mac 1/2 gun. it lasted year. bought on IR gun, lasted about a year. both were expensive. Bought a HF Earthquake 1/2 gun for 49$ used it daily for 20 years and it still works great. i abuse it. it is heavy and made of steel. I never thought it would last so long. I bought another one recently for 99$. Love it. I also recommend going to 3/8 in high flow air couplers.

The first thing I did when I got the mg725 was take out the "muffler". It's loudER but not OMG loud. I've had it that way for over ten years.

Very interesting video. I do have one question, what size air fitting was used in the demonstration? SnapOn does recommend a 3/8 high flow fitting for the new PT 850. Also, you may have already done this. What I would like to see you do is a very similar test except using chrome sockets versus impact sockets. Maybe even different brand impact sockets because I know everybody uses a special formula for their material.

It should also be noted that the older MG725 with a muffler still has more torque then the new PT850 which has no muffler. I'd be curious to see how much the muffler would take away from the new PT850 if one was added.

my mg725 has a circular switch on the front and rear and its not easy to turn with greasy fingers. Is it possible to order the new improved part and swap it out?

I own the pt850 and have owned the mg725 in the past. Personally I like the pt850 more. It's much more comfortable in your hand and much more balanced. I really haven't noticed any power issues. It hasn't let me down yet

I have a 725 and it is by far the best 1/2 inch impact gun I have owned. Had it 4 years or more and no problems. I do maintain it regularly but when or if it breaks or gets low on power I will rebuild it. Hopefully when/if it does need repair, The parts are still available lol. I do know a few machinist that can make parts for me.

Iv had the mg725 about 8 ish years i needed to get it rebuilt as it was getting super hot and having problems turning. Since rebuilt i wouldn’t trade it over any other half inch impact and iv used a TON of different ones

When I bought my pt850 it was zapping off nuts on our semis nuts easier than the "old bull". That being said I love both and have no complaints with either. But I do find the new one more torquey on reverse anyway. Both impacts are barely used so it's not a matter of wearing them out!

how about a comparison of the ct8810a vs the milwaukee 2754? Both have similar power output. Would like to know if snap on is true in there numbers.

I'd take the 725 (which I already have), just for the direction switch. It's more intuitive than a side to side switch.

Having extensively used the 725 and 850, the 850 definitely likes a bit more air, and when it gets that air it knocks the socks off a 725 in a shop setting. However, porting/revalving a 725 can yield incredible results.

I just bought a IR 2235 my next impact will be the nitrocat 1250k. I am also in the market for the strongest 3/4 air impact so what is that the IR or the nitrocat ?

Had both, MG725 bullet proof. Work on heavy equipment and found that I lost power over time with the pt850. Took it to the tool guy and other customers had the same problem. Lost power over a short period of time/give or take. Only reason I tried the pt850, was told higher torque rating. Other than that, testing the pt350 for the hard to reach areas. I’ll let you know the results

I have an mg725 snap on and I have had zero issues with it and I honestly believe that it is the best 1/2 inch impact that snap on makes.

Good tool comparison. My snap on rep tryed to get me to trade in my mg725 for the pt850 a few weeks ago. He let me borrow the pt850 demo gun he had on his truck for a week. I liked the pt850 but it didn't feel like it had the working torque of my 5 year old mg725. I also beat the hell out of my impacts and just don't think the pt850 will hold up to the abuse. Another thing is a half pound isn't that much weight to make a huge difference plus i like to work on my pythons while working and going lighter won't help. I also can't justify spending over $500 on a composite impact when IR and many other companies make one that's half the price and just as good. I'm kind of a snap on fanboy but i can't force myself to buy into this impact. All in all the pt850 is a good impact but it's just not for me. That's my take on it.

love my MG impacts

I've had two MG725s and one Cornwall branded IR. The first MG725 the nose cone cracked and eventually came apart all around the housing. I had a crap dealer that never came around at the time. So I bought the Cornwell branded IR, it's served me well for 7 or 8 years now heavy heavy use, the anvil is worn out and it won't hold a socket anymore (anvil it the snap ring I've replaced the snap ring multiple times) The second MG725 has just been a backup to the IR since it's so heavy, but I've been using it now since it'll hold most sockets. My 30mm socket is almost completely rounded out on the drive and I'm just waiting to see if I can round it out now.

makes tons of sense i have a blue point cart and when i buy good tools i tend to lean towards bluepoint alot because it beats snapon pricea for the same quality alot of blue boints stuff just isnt as polished as snap on which is fine with me but my ratchets and sockets are stanley and other odd tool companys i buy gear wrench from sears and smaller air tools from ingersall and kobalt

I like them both The PT 850 is lighter and smaller the MG 725 is heavier and bigger I would buy either or you're still both good products👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼✌️

I love my 850 mainly because it has a awesome BPM and work fast and strong enough for what I need it to lol, But I’m also a tool hoarder so I’ll probably go get the MG725G to match my box

I see there are two different quick connect fittings on them. Could that make a difference in the amount of air going to the gun, thus difference in torque?

I personally think snap-on hand tools are excellent, sockets and wrenches, pliers etc. But when it comes to pnuematics and power tools there are better options out there.

In the market for a new. Currently have a 50L 7.2CFM or 6.5 FAD CFM which can run a 1/2" impact wrench for 1 min and then it becomes under powered. I have 2 compressors in mind 100L 8bar 14.5CFM (Displacement) or 9.6 CFM (FAD) or a 50L same CFM but is 10bar instead. The only reason i mention both Displacement and FAD CFM is i have read a lot of people saying the Displacement matters and others saying its the FAD. Personally im leaning more towards the 100L because of the bigger air capacity and reading most tools operate at 6bar. Thanks in advance it would be a great help

I've personally used both air impacts, and actually like the 850 better. I'd choose both over any brand any day though. But I used the 850 the other day and it had a ton of power behind it, even more than my cordless Milwaukee. It really depends on the air line you use, a 725 on a 3/8" air fitting is a lot more powerful than it is on the 1/4 air fittings at work. But the 850 seems to have more power, or suffer less with the smaller air fitting.

I just hope that they don't discontinue the mg725. The pt850 would be nice being lighter and more compact but my 725 is around 8 years old and I've had zero problems with it. I'd like to buy another one in a year or so.

I just bought myself a new MG725 after my dealer tried getting me to buy the PT850. He gave me a PT850 to try and I tested it against a friends MG725 and my own Chicago Pneumatic gun, I thought it was rubbish, struggled with what the MG725 done with ease!

I have the mg725 as well the pt850 so far the mg725 7 year has been repaired several times but I have a lot of heavy duty use such frame work and suspension I’m afraid of put the pt850 to the same use it’s seems like a cheap impact and this doesn’t have power as the mg but hey everybody has different fields and applications so buy the tool that fit your necessities!! I have owned an mg725 for years and, while I haven't owned a pt850, I have used one on several occasions. I appreciate this video because in confirms what I thought. However aside from power, I don't much care for the weight design of the pt850. The distribution seems to make it top heavy and, I'm my opinion, unstable. Also the forward/reverse switch of the pt850 can be difficult to fully seat for people like me who are used to a big button. And, I can say wholeheartedly the trigger of my mg725 has never jammed (and it's also never been rebuilt in over 7 years of use).

I have one I picked up at HF works great.

i have a 725 and it has given me years of great service , I wouldn't dream of trading for the new composite downgrade.

I have both of them but my pt850 is still in the box cause I ran out of air fitting and I need to go buy more.

Is the 100 foot pound difference really that noticeable when in the shop? I mean I doubt the PT850 will have trouble taking off stubborn lugs which is my concern.

the 725 is great its just heavy and not confotable to hold for any length of time. I personally own air cat now and they are amazing for the money!

I bought the PT850 recently. Honestly Its very average. It definitely seems to take a while to build up the torque whereas many of my older guns have hit hard on the very first impact. I guess you can argue that makes it more controlled, but I feel it actually just makes it slower. I was hoping for a decent upgrade from my 9 year old gun that was built by Florida Pneumatic, as it was beginning to feel week. I'm not sure I really upgraded, but hopefully I will see 9 years out of this gun also. A coworker recently purchased a Cornwell brand impact that is built by Air Cat. His was much cheaper, and came with a set of sockets. Having used all three of the guns I would probably rank the PT850 at the bottom of the list next to my Ingersoll Rand I purchased for home use and really don't care for either. I hope this rambling comment helps and if anyone has any questions about any of the 4 guns mentioned I will be happy to try and answer them.

The problem I found with so many Snap on air impact wrenches is when Snap on stops selling them after 4-5 years they no longer want to repair them. My Snap on XT7100 worked great for 9 years and just quit. I contacted Snap on and wanted to have it repair. I was emailed they no longer repair this impact gun.

Torque is good, but it's not the only factor when deciding which imoact to get. The physical dimensions and the ergonmics play a role too. I lent my MG1200 (snap-on 3/4" impact) to my coworker today so he could get into a tight spot that an IR or an Aircat could not get into.

Never used a decent snap on air impact yet, so much better impacts on the market.

My co-worker has the PT850. In 5 years it's broken 4 times. It spins fast however, 11,000 rpm@90psi it says on the back. I have the Ingersoll Rand 2235QTiMax (the quiet one). 4 years of improper use and it still runs like it's brand new. It spins at 8000rpm. It's rated higher than the PT850 but everyone who uses the Snap-On and mine says the Snap-On feels more powerful, but I suspect it's because of the high speed. I also think the hammers hit faster but not as hard as my Ingersoll Rand.

On Snap-on’s web site they are claiming that the MG725 is only putting out 725 ft-lbs of break away torque, and that the PT850 has 1190 ft-lbs of break away? What’s going on here?

Has the mg725 been used? If so it would be broken in and be stronger especially if the pt850 was brand new.

He was so thorough but what about the pressure he put on tge back of gun with hand while impacting ? The more pressure you put on on the more ft lbs.it will produce and the less pressure you put the less torque the gun will make...up to 25% worth...

i own the pt850 that i use everyday in the shop i work in and have had only two instances were i have had to use a breaker bar to break nuts or bolts free also if you oil the 850 everyday you'll never have any issues
