On March 8th, 2013, Snarky Puppy and a host of special guests convened at the Jefferson Center in Roanoke VA. The project was to record a series of live performances in audio and video that would bring attention and benefit to the ongoing work of the center. The Jefferson Center is a non-profit arts organization that is revitalizing a key neighborhood in Roanoke with the restoration of Jefferson High School and the renovation of the Shaftman Performance Hall. The hall brings world class music to the local community through the Music Lab, providing education and recording space for local children.
The Music Lab at Jefferson Center is working daily to pull from every social and economic class of the Roanoke community and create the next wave of real, human musicians. They host low cost or free after-school programs for any interested young people filled with visits by guest artists, private instrumental instruction, and recording training. Wafting out of the little studios and rehearsal rooms on the third floor of Jefferson Center, you can hear Afro-beat in Swahili, hip-hop in Liberian Kreyol, the blues coming from the guitar of a 13 year-old prodigy, and the undeniable sound of young musicians growing. It's a thing that needs to be supported at all costs across this country, and by purchasing this record, you've done it.
A portion of every sale will go to the Music Lab at Jefferson Center.

Let me get this straight. Split her voice to harmonize with HERSELF. Moved with fluid ease from baritone to the top of the soprano scale. It's over. Mediocrity has taken over the music industry and it's an injustice. I'm not hating on anyone's style, I'm just saying make room for everybody. It is a crime that this does not have 100+M views. This is the baddest I've seen.

Luther Vandross, Diana Ross, Oleta Adams, Earth Wind and Fire, Phil Perry, Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Elton John, The Master just as talented as her friend and sister Brenda, there is again The one and only Patrice Rushen, Rufus and Chaka Khan, Donna Summer, Joni Mitchell, Sheila E, to name a few!!! @@N0B0DY_SP3C14L Yo I actually know a bit about this. It's to do with the relationship between harmonic overtones. The interplay between 2 overtones can create a third 'phantom' overtone which doesn't actually have a fundamental. This technique is used quite a bit in drum and bass music to create movement in bass parts by detuning the oscillators. doing so creates a third tone which is outside of the human frequency range and is thus perceived as silence and gives a bassline movement. What Lalah is doing here is creating a phantom frequency between the 2 notes which she is singing which is FUCKING INSANE. Like jeeeeeeesus I can't stop watching this it's so amazing that I actually got a bit overwhelmed and cried a little

What's so wrong about her Grammy win is that Something is a centerpiece on her first/second album over 20 years ago. It took Snarky Puppy and their larger audience to get the masses hip to Lalah, when in reality, she's had a cult following among Jazz and R&B lovers since 1989. That Grammy win was long, long overdue.

***** I can see how it's not a big deal to some. But when I heard this, I was home alone, with my headphones blasting, and I was totally into the whole feel of the whole song. I felt like I was there and I was having fun with the band. Just a personal experience. The first couple of them seem to be warm-ups, but the last two were great; I laughed and smiled like if I were actually there, especially after the drummer gets off his set. I'm a drummer, so I know that it's hard for something to get you off the stool like that. It's also hard to give undivided attention to things sometimes and we're always distracted by so much. I think that's why so many people aren't impressed by anything anymore.
@LUX_8
@LUX_8 9 лет назад
Jeremy Daccarett I felt it too! I was impressed by her effortless scatting / improvisational chops. It was like I was listening to a jazz instrumentalist, rather than a vocalist. That section at 6:02, where it sounded like she was double-tonguing the notes, had me smiling. But yeah, when she did that "dual tone" self-harmonizing, my mind was positively blown. The ease of Lalah's performance disguises the overall difficulty and depth of her artistry and talent.

***** oh..."I'm a musician"..."I compose". Salty, stuck-up people like you are the reason why the internet is a terrible place. All of us are musicians. And apparently (obviously), we appreciate more than you do. It definitely doesn't sound as good as two people striking a chord, but she is ONE person. When you have someone with a rare ability performing in front of you and you hear that through your in-ears, I'm sure it's incredibly impressive enough to react just how they reacted. People today need to go back to being impressed instead of just saying everything is "NBD". I get what you're saying, but I don't really think you need to voice your displeasure in response to someone else's praise. If someone says they like your drumming, I'm not going to knock down their opinion just because I don't like how you drum or the way you are set up, or hold your sticks, etc.
@sherrysink3177
@sherrysink3177 9 лет назад
***** I think what's amazing about it is 1) that she can do it at all, but also 2) that it opens up a world of possibilities. It may not sound nice to you, or as powerful as you enjoy when two voices sing harmony together, but I wonder to myself, what would happen if someone with this ability is able to work at it and develop it? What if at some point a person could get strong enough with that ability that she's finally able to harmonize with herself in that strong-voiced way you prefer? I think it would be mind-blowing. Who knows what a person could learn to do with their own voice? It's just remarkable.

There are somethings in life that defies description. This is one if them! Lalah Hathaway has always been in a class by herself. This masterful performance with the band Snarky Puppy is not only a testament to who Lalah is as an artist, but she unveils a rare vocal trait that only a very few have mastered. Her father, the late Donnie Hathaway, has to be smiling from Heaven everytime he hears his daughter's voice. This is Magnum Opus at its very best!❤❤❤❤❤
