I still believe that the greatest crossover in history was the Battle of cowpens you had Daniel Morgan and Nathaniel Green at the cowpens. Francis Marion (The Swamp Fox) just off to the South had been letting ol' Tarleton chase him till he was ragged just prior to the battle and the over mountain men had just whupped ol Ferguson up on Kings mountain just to the north so he couldn't reinforce Cornwallis at The Cowpens... It all came together for one big showdown.
@Real11BangBang
@Real11BangBang Год назад
The reason I bring up The Cowpens is that Daniel Morgan instructed his riflemen to go halfway down the battlefield target the officers shoot them, fall back, reload then rinse and repeat. The British regulars lost over 40% of their officers and NCOs in the first two volleys.

Awesome video sir! From what I remember from history class, you take out the officers and it does hurt the formation, but they were still capable of discipline and continuing the attack thanks to NCOs. I believe that’s where we got our current military structure from anyway, the British army. Something hunters/snipers/scouts etc probably would have used is the Stop, Look, Listen, Smell tactic to gather information on their surroundings, though in 1777 they definitely didn’t call it SLLS.

The Richard Sharpes stories highlight how the Brits later learned to employ sniper squads against the French. The regulars had cheaper and faster to load smooth bores. Snipers used slower to load, long shot capable rifles.

The battle of Saratoga and Morgan’s rifleman (they weren’t called snipers at the time) killed General Simon Fraser. The rumor was that Timothy Murphy shot him from 400 yards away. That has been proven to be wrong. General Fraser himself survive the initial wound and while he was dying, told his command to secure the right flank. He saw the man who shot him hiding in a tree. He was less than 100 yards away from him.

Too many people have gotten in the mindset that in order for a muzzleloader to be accurate, it must be an inline with a scope. During the American Revolution, some pretty long shots were made, and during the Civil War, Confederate sniper Jack Hinson was using a percussion .50 Kentucky rifle to shoot Union troops on boats coming up the Tennessee River at distances of 300 yards and better, and he did it a lot.

I was thinking about the kinds of weapons that would be ideal to have in a survival situation (say ww3 happened and society goes belly up) - Was watching Jeremiah Johnson a while back, which led me to my new growing interest in muzzleloaders. It looks like an ideal option for hunting or even limited self defense - since you can produce everything needed to basically have unlimited ammo - so long as you stock up on enough lead and chemicals to make black gunpowder. I assume it should also be easy to make the strike caps too? As a secondary fallback option, I’d have a recurve bow - But mainly rely on an Umarex Airsaber - easy to charge with a foot or hand pump, up to 20 shots per compressed tank - and more kinetic energy than most compound bows. (450 fps/169 fpe) great for large game.. obviously better than Muzzleloader for self defense, considering how fast you can load arrows.
@blackpowdermaniacshooter
@blackpowdermaniacshooter Год назад
I agree with your thoughts. The muzzleloader will be the gun of the future when hard times arrives. There will be very few bullets for modern guns available & if you can find them, they will be VERY expensive. The wonderful thing about muzzleloaders is....we can always go back to the good ol' days of the 1770's in America & survive.

Tim Murphy, one of Daniel Morgan's Riflemen, recognized as the father of American Sniper Tactics, is supposed to have taken out two British General Officers with two shots from his double barreled rifle at the battle of Cowpens. But the question of whether his rifle was a side by side, or a turnbreech has never been satisfactorily answered, as no rifle that can be directly attributed to him has ever surfaced, ( my money is on the turnbreech, as I have seen a couple of examples of these, and it just makes sense because American Smiths would have used an economy in components)

great video. I had heard about snipers during the revolution. The snipers did target officers, but they also targeted artillery and NCO's after they removed officers. Something I believe happened during or after the Revolutionary War, was the creation of longer-range rifles. By the time of the Civil War, they had rifles that a good shooter could make a shot upwards of 500 yards. Look at today's snipers with modern fire power, it is almost commonplace for a sniper to shoot 1000 yards, with some being able to hit a target from 1 mile or even more. Thank you for the video. And I agree, JESUS really does love me. JESUS really does love you also, and everyone or your readers and beyond. Keep up the great videos. Although I agree with 90% of this video, in reality, American long riflemen were not that combat effective as a whole. Individual snipers might have been marginally more effective, but the historic examples are few and many are controversial. Yes, the rifled barrels were amore accurate, but hitting a man in a battle from 250+ yards, often in some degree of motion , was extremely difficult - even today on a gun range. My guess is that there was a high degree of luck - or not - depending on one's position. Casualty counts show rather light losses in most Revolutionary battles, except for within certain segments of the field. Bunker Hill was an exception, with high losses on both sides. Still, there is no mention of British soldiers falling in mass numbers from rifle fire. Most of the British losses at Bunker Hill were from ordinary armory issued or farmer owned older pattern Brown Bess muskets - not rifles. The losses were a direct result of the longer range attributed to the higher elevation of the ramparts - not because of pin point accuracy. The British were taken under fire well before they could return fire. There is written testimony from British officers of being fearful and disdainful of American snipers and riflemen, considering them to be below contempt and deserving of no mercy. But, there was never anything like the casualties - by percentage - of Waterloo, Borodino, or other battles using pretty much the same equipment. Also, the smoothbore volleys from line infantry did not just land short of the mark. They most likely went past the target and hit lots of men in the rear - including officers, horses, wagons, artillery crews, etc. In many cases, there is simply no way to be sure that a rifle took down an officer or whether it was an errant .72 caliber from a smoothbore, owned by a farmer in a militia company. The British were good soldiers, and well knew the capabilities of rifles. They had Loyalists among their army, and were just as good at taking aim. British line infantry knew that rifles take a long time to reload and had no bayonet, thus, they would take a volley, then charge quickly at the run before the American rifle companies could reload. A company of troops could easily over run other men from 150 yards before you could re-load a longrifle. Most of the time, American riflemen ran, rather than get skewered. I seriously doubt that a typical battle was like that shown in The Patriot, with British troops just standing there getting popped. The American War was not like those of Europe. The revolution was very dynamic, with lots of fluidity and small unit maneuver. Armies were small and had many irregular elements. Finally, by the end of the war, nearly all rifle companies were assimilated into regular line infantry units because the smoothbore was still the deciding factor, and was by then well trained enough to stand their ground and be reliable - something that was not there in irregular rifle companies of farmers and independantly minded woodsmen. Yes, there were well regulated rifle companies, on both sides, but they were disciplned, uniformed members of the army - not thrown together men of whatever trade. A lot of this long range sniping stuff is just myth. Some of it is not.

Haven't introduced this one yet. I've only had it since August & this is the 1st time shooting it on a video. I'll be putting it on future videos occasionally from time to time...but, for the most part, I'll be sticking with those factory guns. Thanks for watching.
