In this video we look at the importance of tracking the object ball to the pocket. Having a detailed plan before the shot and following the object ball is a very important habit to form.

Another useful video. I've never thought of playing the shot that way. It certainly gets you concentrating on the vital pot more than the position of the cue ball. At least if the pot is successful but the position isn't, you've still got the next shot. 👍

Very nice suggestion, that of putting up a mental "wall" to keep your eyes focused on the object ball's line of travel rather than that of the cue ball during and after the strike. I usually wind up watching the cue ball to see if it's going to jump off and fly through a window.

Thanks. That's the way I think about these shots now. Forget what the white ball is doing and focus on the pot.

Another great video with excellent on screen graphics. When you played the shot from the black to move the pink, with just a little bit of power and stun, those shots always surprise me. Would you be willing to create a lesson showing us the possible angles and reach of the stun shots? I'm never sure just how far I can squeeze the white. Maybe this comes from experience though...and paying for a good private teacher of course! :)

Hi Steve. Can you explain/do a video about the difference between aiming for the point of contact and aiming for the centre of the ghost ball? If you aim for the centre of contact (the back of the object ball/furthest point from the pocket), then you'll hit the ball too thick. Do you aim for the centre of the ghost ball which is incredibly difficult to visualise? Or do you focus on the point of contact and just adjust your aim subconsciously? If the centre of the cue ball hits the contact point of the object ball, the shot will always be too thick unless its a straight shot. Thank you so much for all your videos and help.
@MrBobZack

I’ve found it useful to concentrate on only the the cueball “ striking “the object ball to the extent that I see neither the object ball going into the pocket nor where the whitey is going. Usually if I hit my determined contact point with the object ball, the ball is pocketed and then I enjoy the fruits of my labor. No need to be following , better to hear the ball falling into the pocket.

I had formulated an erroneous theory a longtime ago, that just precisely after collission of the cue ball with the object ball it is the right thing to follow the cue ball for two reasons (my logic then). If cue was delivered on the line of aim properly, the object ball must invariably drop into the pot (provided that the alignment was right) and the objective is to follow the cue ball whether on track to the designated area or spot. I had also surmised that this method would also indicate confidence as also reduce tension in matchplay. I think over passage of time, my method degenerated into taking my eye off the object ball altogether before the moment of impact. Converse; when I play billiards, whenever I am playing a shot other than pot, I would apply the theory to track the object ball whether it be a canon or in off shot, applying the same logic I had formulated in converse. Many a time I would wonder why I miss shots that some one who has been playing the game for decades should never ever miss. Now when I put your lesson into practice, some of my earlier level of accuracy has returned. I do not know for how long this phase will last, before degenrating into taking my off the object ball to shift to the cueball on its way before impact. Dear Mr. Steve Barton, what if we continue to look through the line of aim after impact, neither tracking the cue ball nor object ball? Does this sound weird? Kindly opine. In any case, I am presently enjoying this phase of a partial return to my past glory. I am sorry about the long content, but I really hope you check out and reply please. I am still crazy about the game and flailing about trying to work things out. with regards, VishG

can you please tell me do you look at pocket during featuring or in the final backswing or before delivery ? or the pocket should be in the background or prepheral vision at all the time? i used to look at the cueball as when i was about to hit the cueball but a coach told me years ago to look at object ball , since then i have been having this problem that during features i go like , cueball, objectball, pocket and then cueball , then i look at the objectball as about to hit but i think i move my eyes to pocket while the tip is about to hit the cueball, and i miss alot of shots, should i go back to my old aiming method and look at the cueball when i about to hit the cueball or looking at pocket is normal ? tnx alot for your nice videos

Hiya coach, does which leg you place your weight on matter? I'm a right hander left eye dominant player and my stance is where I place most of my weight on my left leg, and my right leg away from my body. Also, is my pre-shot routine good/correct? This is what I usually do. I size up the shot, seeing where I need to hit the object ball, get down on the table with my eyes fixed on the white ball. Feather 3 times, eyes still on the white, pull back my cue, and just before I deliver the shot my eyes move to the object ball and I cue through. I've been able to cue rather well but I can't seem to make breaks. I knock in a stunning red every now and then with great cueing and miss sitters and I can figure out why.

@leedaykin3541

Hi Steve, Do you just rely on instinct to hit the cue ball in the correct place depending on what sort of spin you are trying to achieve? As if you are looking solely at object ball at time of strike could you possibly not hit the cue ball where you intend. Thanks lee
@BartonSnooker
@BartonSnooker 4 года назад
Once you have done your aiming checks when down on the shot, this should mean that when we actually strike, we don't need to look at the cue ball, and our muscle memory and consistent cue action will take care of that. Obviously it takes practice, but this is what the pros do!

Hi Steve, not sure if you reply to messages i've tried a few times now to no avail, but if you could i would be most grateful thank you. When initially working out the next shot including for next position, is there a way toaccurately calculate/track where the cue ball will finish after it hits the object ball and especially after it comes off the cushions or is it a guesstimate type scenario Do you have a video about that please? Thx

Useful presentation on the importance of achieving the pot whilst manipulating the cue ball. The not overlong session focusses the mind effectively. One thought; a mention of how and when the judgement of shot strength is allowed for, also the fact that you still have options if you have potted the object ball, even if you miss your intention with the cue ball, but a miss of the pot is disastrous as you have probably set up you opponent on the next shot!!! Thanks again Steve.

Hi, I discovered your channel some weeks ago and watched a lot of your videos. You should mention somewhere that this is only for high skilled players and not for hobby-players like myself (high break 34). Since I watched your videos and tried some drills and techniques I lost my potting skills (which were not too bad) totally and most of my safety play (not too bad either) and lost to opponents regularly I did not loose for years. Maybe I can screw the ball better than before, but the game is broken totally. Your videos are good, the explanations excellent, but not practicable for weekend-players.

Hi Steve, a question about when you screw into the pack from the black. You often see the ball have momentum where the ball seems to hit the pack and then "zips" through the balls when the pros on TV play the shot. I believe it's because they put screw AND side on the ball. What side do they use (reverse or running)?
@squaredcue1202
@squaredcue1202 4 года назад
No side is necessary for that. Only back spin, lots of back spin.
