I'm sick of winter! Been dealing with some snow and mice digging through my early plantings in the basement. The bright spot was getting a mini seed haul from ‪@MIgardener‬ with a few new types of plants I haven't tried growing before.

I'm anxious to see how your coffee plant does. It would be great to grow my own coffee but I don't think Missouri is going to become the new coffee capital. LOL. Nice seed haul.

I think I will be joining you with Maryland not being a coffee capital either, lol, but I am hopeful that we can get a couple of bushes going that I'll just have to move inside in winter months.

Good seed haul! Sorry you had a mouse problem. I've left my greenhouse doors open a lot on nice days, so an uninvited little guest has worried me. So far, so good. I didn't have any luck with Peach Melba nasturtiums (from BC). They germinated, but just never took off. Last summer I had Alaska nasturtiums planted about a foot from my butternut squash. I fought those evil squash bugs & vine borers all summer! Maybe I just didn't have enough nasturtiums around it. My fav sauce tomatoes are oxhearts. Big and meaty. My greenhouse and inside seed starting areas are getting crowded. Giddy with seed starting (finally)! Namaste.

I only grew one type of nasturtiums in the past, but don't remember which variety. I do remember they seemed to take forever to get going and I don't think I had flowers on them until late summer. I should probably start them earlier this year to make sure they are big enough to potentially make a difference, although your experience isn't giving me a lot of confidence in if they will work. lol I may have to check out those OxHearts, haven't grown those before, but I've heard good things about them. Good luck with all of your growing!

I think I'll plant more strong smelling herbs like rosemary and dill, along with icicle radishes in with the nasturtiums around my squash. The war is on!! I'm growing Bread & Salt oxhearts from BC this year. Last year I grew Kosovo oxhearts and they did pretty well, Good luck to you, too! @@oneseedoneworld

@@zinnia3190 I did the radish thing a couple years ago, but I planted my radish too early and they grew so big they shadowed out the squash, so I had to pull them (which of course defeated the purpose of the whole experiment). I'm growing those Bread and Salt this year too for the first time I forgot those are a type of Oxheart.

I saved up money for awhile and invested in gardening tools, supplies, seeds, and a bunch of fruit and berry trees and bushes, plus my first strawberries since moving to a very rural Louisiana lot. My dreams of having a huge abundance of mulberries and figs are almost a reality. And the birds I feed that help me with garden pests will be very happy as well and when I get hens/ducks the trees can help feed them. I`m gonna have a nice wine supply to go with the blackberry patch and be able to make a concentrated medicinal blend of mulberry, blackberry, elderberry, huckleberry, strawberry and hopefully chokeberry juices. I`m gonna add those little oblong goji ( ?) berries too. I was told that organic dried ones are full of living seeds.

That's great you have room for fruit trees! I'm limited there. We do have 2 cherry trees, but they have yet to produce any cherries and we've had them for 5 years. Although a friend of mine said she had some cherry trees that took 18 years before they ever produced anything! I hope I don't have to wait that long.

This is why I chose figs and dwarf mulberry trees...they can produce well by the 2nd & 3rd year and it keeps improving after that. You can get grafted trees that have old wood on old roots. I want pears and apples but for the price of one twig of those I can plant dozens of figs and mulberries. Citrus is the same...overpriced. @@oneseedoneworld

You can grow green tea. There`s a Japanese variety likely suited to your zone. Have you ever tried the Cape Gooseberry that`s a native of Peru? It does well in shaded areas. It`s supposed to be tasty, sweet, and a heavy producer. I just got my seeds of that yesterday so it will be perfect to grow in mostly partial shaded areas and in areas with morning sun.

That's one plant I forgot to mention. We do have 2 tea plants, they are a cold hearty variety. We've had them for about 3 years, but haven't actually used them to make tea yet. Another one of those things on the to do list.

I accidentally grew roma tomatoes last year due to a bait and switch deal. I liked them but that isn`t what I ordered. This year I`m growing celebrity and another very productive large type and some cherry and micro dwarf Pinocchio tomatoes. And lots of okra and Southern peas, plus Beit Alpha and Iznik self pollinating cucumbers. Black eyed pea leaves are 40% protein so I`m growing some from a store package to cook the young pods and leaves to eat with rice. I assume other closely related types like purple hulls & asparagus pole beans are the same. Not sure but it`s basically the same plant.
