Snow Mountain Theme (スーパーマリオ64) sight-read by Tom Brier

This tune, either as Snow Mountain, Cool Cool Mountain, Slider, or Bob-omb Battlefield -- all different versions of the same tune -- has been requested a lot. It is a fun tune indeed. Download my piano arrangement here: www.keeper1st.com/music/coolco... or from my site www.keeper1st.com/music/vgm.html
RU-vidr "wheelmanmitch" transcribed the entire band arrangement of it, which I then condensed into piano sheet music.
As always, Tom adds a lot more than what's on the page.
Recorded 19 May 2012 at the Sutter Creek Ice Cream Emporium, 51 Main Street, Sutter Creek, California. This was after the May 2012 meeting of the Mother Lode Ragtime Society.

The guy in the green shirt expresses all of our feelings. That feeling that you are just going to burst when sitting next to greatness. The awkward smile you can’t help but to have while sitting there witnessing history. And at the end of it, all you can do is laugh, because there are no words to describe that level of greatness. We don’t even bother to aspire to be Tom, we aspire just to be the in the same room as him. Mr. Green Shirt is already more than we can hope to be.

+Stuart Murray Good question. Whatever the answer is I just hope that when he dies he does so knowing that he was a legend in his own time. The man deserves that. Nintendo would not be Nintendo without him. Joy, dread, panic, sadness, hope... he has a way of expressing situations and emotions through song like sounds are a language that he himself created. A language that everyone fluently understands as soon as they hear it and most musicians dream to speak.

Sadly Koji Kondo is on that age when most of the things that other people create are not as good as "the good ol days of yore". The good part is that he seems to be really humble and really down to earth, I like his work. I don't like when people idolize him to the point of divinity, even he doesn't like that according to his interviews.

That part starting at 5:19 almost made me cry. It was like the ending the song deserved. The end of a nostalgic era: everything was so simple when I was a child, and like every child, I always wanted to be an adult, to get a job and a house, it was just a matter of time to be an adult... Now as an adult, I just want to be a child again, but unfortunately I can't travel back in time, and the only way to go to the past is listening to these masterpieces, specially played by this legend. Of all Tom's video game songs, this one might be the best. It's certainly debatable, but this is an amazing version of this song.

Still returning to Tom's remarkable sight-reading brilliance from time to time, enjoying the sheer talent and his honest joy! He might not ever recover from the tragic accident, but he'll continue putting a smile on so many faces as long as we have this channel

Apart from this gent being able to play this from sight, one of the other things that blows my mind is how quickly he gets back on track if he does make a wee mistake here or there. He just plays on without a break in his flow at all it's amazing.

I've listened to these recordings times uncounted, but I was absolutely unprepared for the tone shift at 5:20 It just wrecked me emotionally, like Tom distilled a lifetime of nostalgia into a brief musical moment. Jesus. Then he finished with a quick humorous flourish. Don't think he realized how much power he was wielding. The world is missing a legendary artist. Thank you for recording these for the rest of us.

I personally think this is one of Tom’s best sight reads when it comes to these video game pieces. I’m also partial to the Super Mario Land 2 ending.

Most, but not all, of us can sight-read a newspaper. But Tom Briers can read music notation, edit it, vary it and then play it with style. Effing awesome.

People don't appreciate the genius it takes to do this... I honestly don't know if there is a classical concert pianist who is able to do what this man does... and he seems so humble about everything too... I'm just gobsmacked at what I'm witnessing here... He could have EASILY won any America's got talent - or any other competition in the WORLD.... WOW. Just WOW. BREATHTAKING STUFF!!!!

It's been over 10 years, I met Tom when I was a tenager, now I'm a grown up man with my own family, and still Tom continue to amaze me and by far he is the musician that most inspires me on what I should bring to people while playing. I'm a bass and guitar player from Brazil playing brasilian rythms and It's crazy how this guy has much to teach even without meeting personally and huge cultural difference. If you are musician too, let's preserve this feeling that Tom brings to us and keep what really matters in music despite of the instrument and genre we are playing. Music is not only about technique but also about healling people.
