Why do we deserve Gary's songs? The world out there is very wild, cold, without feelings. When I hear this song I feel a warmth enveloping me. The tears flowed non-stop and I wondered what had gone wrong. And I'm close to his age..

Because if they had played it on the radio over and over again, they'd run the risk of desecrating the song, because it's not some song that should be left playing in the background while you are focusing on something else.

I had a 9 year relationship and lost it. it was nobody’s fault we tried so hard for so long but she was from America and I was from the uk. I was a poor artist not satisfying the requirements to get her into the county permanently. At last it was too much and she broke off. I’ve never hurt like it ever. I see her all the time, everywhere in the house. When it’s Friday I remember us getting a takeaway together. When I hear music that we liked she is there. when I heard this song it spoke to me. I’m not sure I’ll get over this one. life is grey and it’s been nearly 10 months. I thought it was mean to get easier but I don’t feel it. I live in hope.

Man, this sings my truth... it's kinda crazy how the person who made me the happiest could make me the saddest and yet I still thinking that she was the one. That feeling that you're being dumb and praising the sadness, I always think that I'm being an ass while asking for comfort. I'm glad I have a few friends that are Up to listen to me and I feel it is genuine but they already have to deal with their problems, I just don't one to be one more problem. This song is so beautiful but a sad reminder for us all never to take love and relationships for granted. Just because you have experienced love in the past does not mean it will always be there. Many lovely people end up living most of their life alone. If a true love comes along with undeniable feelings on both sides grab it with both hands and hold on. Ride the waves of life but dont let go of each other. I met my love when I was 18. We got married a year later and now 30 years have passed. Four wonderful kids now all adults. We still choose to love each other every day. Choose the one you love, love the one you choose. Hope all those seeking a great love find it as I have xx

I read in an interview that Gary decided to write this song when he visited his hometown and realized that a lot of lifelong friends he grew up with were having difficult times in their relationships with their significant others, and many of them were thinking about divorcing. So the message is like "no man, please try harder, you'd regret if you don't try harder now".

This is one of the only bands that I have literally grown with. The songs they put out hit my life exactly when I need them. This song is a reality I’ve already known for myself for years, and I’m about to send it to the man I love because I want to open his eyes to taking this chance with me. We are both in a prison right now, and it might not get better for either one of us-at least not for several years…maybe ever. I hope it hits him the way it hits me.

There's always reflection of many emotions , many life events, in all of snow patrol music. This video is directed so brilliantly. Gary Lightbody never lets us down. So worth the wait. I've seen them in concert many many many times and I look forward to seeing them again. Sure hope they come to the Fillmore in Denver again. Please. Best concert ever........

You will, don’t worry. It is normal to fell lonely sometimes and feel like you willl never find someone. Just focus on yourself and your baby. The first time I heard this song, I misheard one line as "What if this is all the love I ever show". (Instead of "What if this is all the love I'm ever shown.") In my mind I feel that love isn't something you just get, or deserve. Love is reciprocal. The love you show to someone else, is love too. It makes my heart ache just as much to realize "what if this is all the love I ever show"? Kind of opens your eyes and makes you aware that we don't have forever in this life to show your love to the ones you do.. "Stop holding back!" :-)

I could listen to that song every day for the rest of my life and never get tired of hearing it . ✨💖 Snow patrol are so underrated there one of the Best Bands around. Thank you Gary and Co your songs have really helped get though some dark days. Interesting to read all the interpretations in the comments. Here's mine. A lot of us (speaking of myself) strive to be good enough for others and for ourselves. We push ourselves to perfection. We hold ourselves to such high standards and feel like we are never enough. We all want to be loved. But this song begs the questions, "What if this is all the love I'll ever get?" Maybe realizing that, we can learn to accept and love ourselves, as we are.

OMG can I ever relate. Sometimes it feels like how can anyone ever write another love/breakup song that hasn't already touched the soul of how it feels, and then come this song that makes you feel like it's the only one that's ever been written that nails the feeling of a love loss, and the scariness of moving into the unknown.
