All of these characters are just a reflection of the power fantasies they play in their head. They have no emotional intelligence or consideration for other points of view, so all they do is pump out the exact same thing over and over again. Becase we aren't getting films and shows written by competent writers. It's all political power plays now.

I’d love to see 1990’s-Disney versions of folktales from around the world. That was my main point around The Little Mermaid. I know Africa has SO many mermaid tales, why retell the one everyone knows?

I agree I don't believe children themselves care if they characters look each other or not. When I was a kids my favourite cartoon was hugo the hippo, which was set in Zanzibar and all the children in it where black.

Part of the problem is the extreme social divide in the US, though the rest of the West has similar issues. The more urban you become, the more socially liberal and progressive you become. Hollywood is at the pinnacle of "social progressivism."

To the best of my knowledge, most people are closer to the middle than one of the extremes, but it seems that the two extremes are the only ones that get any attention. It is an unsustainable situation and one that traditionally helps to send people in the opposite direction of those who at the time seem most foolish, causing many traditionally center-seeking people to look to the right. Something that is also not a very good idea. Usually the world works best when the sides can talk to each other without going crazy. And you are absolutely right that the USA is totally constipated. I still wish they would stick to destroying their own cultural heritage instead of destroying everyone else's.

there's nothing wrong with disney drastically adapting and changing popular stories, as long as the end product is good, but they can't even make a halfway decent star wars or indiana jones flick. they could make the little mermaid a mer-dude for all i care, but they sorely need some actual talented moviemakers instead of the hacks they rely on now

Although it wasn't as significant, you could also say the same about The Little Mermaid. That movie basically saved Disney from a years long commercial and critical slump, and kickstarted the very successful Disney Rennaisance period through the 90s. They really don't give a shit about the company's legacy.
