I never seen snowball plants before, but a week ago I bumped into one at Home Depot. Just one, hiding among hydrensia. I don’t like white flowers, but liked that flowers on picture looked almost identical to hydrensia.We live in Northen Nevada and hydros do not survive here. So, I was actually happy to find out that snowballs are hardy. And your information was very helpfull. Size of your shrub gave me even more excitement. Interstingly that we are in the same 5 zone, but we have late snow for couple days. Can't wait for planting my snowball

I have these and I love them. After a big rain I go out and give the branches a good jiggle to get the extra water out of the blooms which weighs down the branches and makes them get saggy and lean down. Mine get full sun and are 15 ft apart with roses and perennials in between. I highly recommend these especially if you want to fill a large space or want a gorgeous privacy screen.

Hi Kelly! I have a Chinese snowball viburnum that exploded with blooms the third year. But the blooms smelled really bad, lol! I don’t know if I need to cut them while they’re green to enjoy them. And I think it’s the Chinese snowball in particular. It grows well in poor soil, full sun and drought conditions (Dallas area). How wonderful that you are sharing your beautiful flowers with the church to celebrate first communion!

Hi Kelly! Mary from WNY here. In the beginning of your video you said they didn’t bloom for a couple years. Well, I have learned, from some of my experienced gardening friends, that when you move a plant or plant a new one, not to be discouraged. Remember this saying… “First year they sleep, 2nd year creep, 3rd year leap.” Sometimes there is a 2 year creep, which I found out with my peonies, so having patience is crucial to gardening. This saying is , for the most part, true. There is always an exception, but I thought I’d share. ☺️

I moved to a property where one is growing and it's estimated to be between 15-20 yrs old, according to my neighbor. It's thinning at the top and there's a lot of dead wood in there which I plan to trim after the flowers are gone. Right now in mid-May, the new lime colored snowballs are popping up. The flowers on my tree do not get as big as the ones you showed. Not sure if that's a different variety or other factor. I am trying to root some new ones, so it's good to know how long they take to produce blooms.

Your instincts are correct. They loose their leaves like the hydrangeas. I don't prune mine back but but you can prune it right after it the blooms turn brown in spring if you like . The snowball blooms come in on old wood .

Hi Kelly, I'm Michelle, I garden in zone 7a East TN. I just bought my 1st Snowball Viburnum. It was the last one at the garden center. Are there different Snowball viburnums? The leaves on yours are different from the one I bought. We get a lot of spring freezes here. They have names for each one at specific times of each month. I did lose some beautiful perennials this year due to the extreme warmth to the extreme cold and freeze. I did cover them too but sometimes it's mother nature. I'm hoping to find this plant here, it's gorgeous!

I have a Japanese popcorn viburnum and it’s the strangest thing it is fully leafed out on one side but on the left it didn’t leaf out or bloom at all this year. It was planted I think it was 3 years ago? Do you think if it does the same next year I could cut off the section that isn’t leafing out and it will survive?
@KellyLehman
@KellyLehman 2 года назад
Hi Sonya, are the branches on the side of the viburnum that are not leading out dead ? You can tell by cutting a section of it and if it’s white inside it means the branch is dead . If this is the case , cut it out . If the viburnum branch has some green inside it means it’s alive and should come back next year . Any chance some deer ate off the early leaves ?
@sonyakim4403
@sonyakim4403 2 года назад
@@KellyLehman When I checked before the branches were green inside but I will go check again as it’s been a couple months. No deer around here but it is the strangest thing! I will trim it up a bit and cut out any dead but hopefully it is back to normal next season. I have it in the front of my house so if it doesn’t look very nice after being trimmed up and leafed out next spring I plan to relocate it to another part of the property and put something else nice to look at in its spot but I was surprised as I know viburnum are very hardy so for the life of me I cannot figure out what could have happened to it.

Viburnum beetles wiped this plant out in my garden years ago. It was a favourite of my grandmother, but you never see it in the city anymore. I think this pest is devastating where it is common. Both the larvae and beetles defoliate the plant. Two defoliations a year is too much for a plant to handle. Too bad it is not growable in this area anymore. Previously, it was so easy and rewarding. Now, forget it.
