SNOWBLOWER VS SNOW PLOW? THE BEST SOLUTION FOR YOUR TRACTOR!

Let's compare a snow plow and snowblower for snow removal with your tractor. Both are frame mounted attachments and certainly beat the pants off using a shovel. Yes, there's advantages and disadvantages to each attachment, but take a look and decide if the snow plow or snowblower is better suited to meet your snow removal needs.
So, if you're trying to determine if you should use a snow plow or a snowblower, then I hope this video clearly explains what to expect with use of each one. Also, make sure you check out the other snow removal videos on my channel as you'll be able to see each of these tractor snow removal options in action along with many more. Thanks for watching!

Good job of hitting all the highlights. I was torn trying to decide how to equip my tractor a few years ago and ended up with a front snowblower and a rear blade for light snow. Great combination. I would like to point out that on gravel driveways like mine it's easy to throw rocks and if you have the plastic impeller, cause it to become loose on its shaft. I ended up replacing my plastic impeller with a metal one. Chain care is high. After every storm, I spray the chain down to keep it from rusting up. I was surprised at how quickly they can rust up. The only other difficulty I can see with the front plow is steering. You will need chains to keep from skidding sideways as it does to me using the back blade. Keep up the good work!

I bought and old 86 John Deere 318 with the 54” plow last year because I was getting tired of using a snowblower. At first I was a bit worried about just how much snow it could actually push. I put some weights and chains on it and the thing is an absolute workhorse. We had a 10” snowfall of wet heavy snow and it was no problem at all. Yeah it piles up but I’ve got plenty of room for it. I’m like a big kid out there playing in the snow just having a blast 😂

Just heard you say you are located in West Michigan. Me too. West of Grand Rapids. Was a long drive from St. Louis yesterday, but got a great deal.

@@GoodWorksTractors If you boil it down pounds of snow per minute a snowblower is the most efficient.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors 4 года назад
It's a subjective statement. That's the entire point. When you're removing snow from a huge open area, it is totally inefficient to blow snow from this spot to another spot. Then you're simply creating more work for yourself, therefore completely inefficient. The opinion of "best" must be qualified and cannot simply be a blanket statement. Additionally, how many times have you heard about snowblowers clogging up, shear pins breaking, or chains snapping? Inefficiency at its finest. Compare that with a pusher or plow that has no way to clog, no shear pins to break, no chains to snap. Yes, pushers and plows have down sides as well, but diverting to that subject would take this message off task. I rarely make blanket statements about anything and instead choose to provide supporting reasoning behind my opinions. Simply too many variables come in to play and everyone has unique circumstances.
@WhiteCavendish
@WhiteCavendish 2 года назад
Another point about blower vs plow is safety if you have pets or small children. In the event a kid or pet runs in front of the machine while you're operating it, the plow is extremely unlikely to cause any injury, whereas the blower could cause some pretty gruesome injuries. Awesome comparison vid, many thanks!

I've had that 54" snowblower for 11 years. It's a workhorse. I put new bearings in it after five years as a preventive measure although it didn't need them. I run a five foot blade on the rear for scraping, pushing and dragging. It was worth every penny.

If you need to change from one attachment to another try a Steiner tractor. You talked about blowers and plows you should check out a broom. I use a broom up to 4 or so inch works great and if you use salt you can cut way down on how much you use. For larger amount of snow I will put on the plow or the blower and finish with the broom. Remember I use a Steiner and can change attachments in minutes ( less than 5).

I have the X540 up here in Maine and have both the snow plow and snowblower, belt driven. Using the snowplow, I can get closer to the pavement and use the plow when the the snow is wet and slushy. The snowblower is definitely an advantage on deep snow. This winter has been small amounts of snow and slushy. Both units use the same attachment brackets, so switching between the two is not two big of a deal. The snowblower and snowplow both have manual controls, no hydraulics. I feel in marginal snow areas, the plow is more important, where ths snow is deeper, the blower is more important. In areas where both conditions exists, one should consider having both units.

What about 3-point mounted rear blowers? Especially the inverted blowers? I use an inverted blower with a back drag that lets me get right up to a building. Best part is that I then drive forward to clear down the 1/4 mile driveway. Small snows are no problem at all. Larger snows I sometimes have to go out in the middle of the storm. The record 5+ foot snow in Feb 2005 saw 3 trips. Anything more than about 20" even for my tractor is too much. For a Sub-Compact I'd be at like 8-10" max as you do have to be able to drive through the snow. I'm running a Ford 5000 which has a very high ground clearance.

Never had an issue with snowblowers with thin (1 inch or less). Its not very efficient but it still clears. The only challenge comes the heavy wet snow where it's to heavy to be thrown, and you just have to be out there clearing it every few inches otherwise you're not going anywhere

The biggest problem with a plow on a tractor is the speed capability. A plow needs at least 10 MPH to work well and 15+ is better. I have a Western plow on my pickup and if I plowed at tractor speeds, then I’d have problems with spillage and windrows, but when you are traveling 15 MPH or better, the snow flies off the plow and travels 10-15 feet off the side of the road. I think a snowblower is a better option on a tractor as they need to run fairly slow. They are as you say much more expensive to both buy and maintain and they are much more dangerous, but for slow speed snow removal, they are hard to beat.

I shaped a big plank of UHMW to fit inside the wear bar arch of the snowblower - it sticks down an extra 1/4" past the metal wear bar. I use it frequently as a very light duty plow, and then snowblow the piles if needed. It doesn't wear quickly, doesn't tear up the concrete or blacktop at all, and a $20 bar has lasted 4 seasons for me so far. Catch is no trip like a plow so I have to go slow and easy. Replaced all the bolts with stainless (a little longer) and countersunk the heads - if it wear down enough, I'll hear it, but I check every year. I also have an x590, so we are talking significantly smaller equipment and less weight here, but that UHMW is awesome stuff for plow edges and wear bars.

@@GoodWorksTractors ok . When you said putting on the blower for winter and leaving it , it sounded as if the process was pretty long and someone wouldn’t want to have to remove it very often . I’d found a method not like what I was shown or what the directions show because those dragged it out for more then double the time . The time it takes me to take off my 2025r loader and put on the 54 inch blower is less then 15 minutes . They should rename their blower to the snap on blower . Granted their directions are a bit longer . Plus I think since the blower is so easy to put on and take off , and then put your loader on with a pair of skids to prevent digging into your black top makes for a pretty slick snow fighting set up here in the Sierras when dealing with 4 to 6 feet of Sierra cement .

Plow deeper by weight than front plow, push windrow farther to the side and if needed the loader can collect and relocate the windrow, pile or berm, where needed. Also lowers risk of flying gravel to cars and windows caused by snow blowers mis placed aim.
